The sound is sickening, a wet, tearing crunch as steel meets flesh. Magnus's wolf jerks, a guttural snarl breaking into something raw, pained.
My heart stops, my breath shatters.
This cannot be happening.
"No!" A raw scream tears from my chest, dragging me forward. A sudden surge of adrenaline floods my veins, lending strength I thought had long abandoned me. I wrench myself free from the ghouls' rotting grasp, their decayed fingers snapping back as I rip away.
"Magnus!" The chains on my ankles clatter as I stumble into a desperate run. But when I see his massive form convulsing, shrinking, bones snapping and folding back into his human shape, my heart seizes. Terror knocks the air out of me, and I collapse, knees crashing against the cold, blood-smeared floor.
