For a breathless moment, there is silence again. 

But then—Magnus's body jolts.

His chest arches against my lap, and a violent shudder ripples through him. I nearly scream, thinking the poison has finally reached his heart, and I was too late to mark him.

But then I see it. The wound… It's closing.

Blackened flesh begins to peel away like ash in the wind, raw muscle knitting together with unnatural speed. Veins that moments ago pulsed with poison flush red again, forcing the cursed silver out like droplets of molten mercury.

The mark is healing him. I can't believe my own eyes.

And Damien can't either.

"What the fuck is going on…?" His voice cracks, his bravado splintering into something broken and terrified. He stumbles a step back, shaking his head like he's watching a nightmare he didn't conjure. "That's not possible. That's—"

But it is.
