LightReader

Chapter 22 - Chapter 22 Research

Allen quickly found an abandoned restroom, closed the door, hid in the innermost stall, sat on the toilet, and then tried out all the spells he knew. The results of the experiment made him ecstatic again.

For the same spell, the text on the light screen always had the same length and format.

For different spells, the text on the light screen was clearly different.

Although he couldn't understand what the text meant, Allen knew he had touched upon the most fundamental mechanism of casting magic.

This made him incredibly excited, as his life since transmigrating to this world had been too bitter!

First, he was in a coma for 5 months, then he had to drink various strange medicines for treatment, and then he was subjected to various studies. After finally being discharged from the hospital, he ended up with a huge debt and could only work to pay it off. He had just managed to get into Hogwarts, only to be bullied by his classmates, and even the owls delivering mail looked down on him.

Moreover, his daily innate transfiguration mostly brought him torment, and when he tried to work hard on magic, he found that his magical talent was just mediocre.

Every day, so many transmigrators from Earth traveled to various planes, showing off, getting revenge, holding power, and enjoying life, while he was almost becoming the shame of transmigrators.

Why are my brothers and sisters showing off, and I'm the only one getting beaten up?

Now it's good, his cheat ability has arrived. He can see the most fundamental mechanism of magic casting. Although this ability doesn't seem very strong, for him now, it's like a timely rain after a long drought. He can finally make great strides on the path of magic!

Allen excitedly envisioned the future, but he quickly calmed down.

The problem now is that the characters on the light screen are too small, and they appear and disappear too quickly. He really can't see them clearly!

Thinking of this, Allen started to frown. His golden finger was good, but he couldn't utilize it. What should he do?

Unwilling to give up, Allen cast another spell. This time, he widened his eyes, preparing to see and remember the characters on the light screen clearly.

As if hearing Allen's thoughts, Allen felt himself enter a peculiar state. He felt as if the flow of time was slowed down by an invisible hand. He could clearly see every detail of the characters on the light screen until he completely finished casting the spell, then he suddenly exited this state.

Allen burst into laughter. Sure enough, his golden finger was very considerate. Although he didn't understand the meaning of the characters now, being in Hogwarts, which had the largest collection of magic books in the wizarding world, and having so many knowledgeable professors around, he felt no pressure at all to figure out the meaning of these characters.

He quickly found his notebook, cast a spell again, and then entered the time-slowed state. This state was both slow and fast. Because the characters were quite complex, Allen only had time to remember two characters before he was expelled from the time-slowed state.

He quickly took out his pen and, before the two runes slipped from his mind, quickly wrote them down in his notebook, then began to repeat the above operation.

His notebook was quickly filled with densely written characters. Soon, half of the characters for a cleaning spell were recorded, but just as Allen was about to continue, he suddenly felt his vision go black, slipped off the toilet, fell to the floor, and became unconscious.

...

After an unknown amount of time, Allen woke up from the darkness. He felt sore all over, as if he had been beaten up, and his head was groggy, unable to concentrate for a long time.

He shifted to a more comfortable position, leaning against the stall wall, and it took him a long time to recover. It was then that Allen noticed a lot of dried blood on his chest.

He struggled to get up from the floor, leaning on the wall as he walked to the restroom mirror. He found his face very pale, with some bloodstains on his nose and mouth, but judging by the blood's trajectory, it seemed to have flowed from his nose.

Allen looked at his haggard reflection in the mirror and thought silently: "Sure enough, everything comes with a price. Although time deceleration is very useful, it puts a great strain on my body. But it's all worth it; I've recorded many characters."

He slowly opened his notebook, carefully looking at the densely packed characters on it, a satisfied smile appearing on his face. When he copied them, he also copied the format and order of the characters.

He looked somewhat greedily at the characters in his notebook. Although he didn't recognize a single character, the more he looked, the more familiar they seemed, as if he had often dealt with this kind of thing before.

Suddenly, a flash of insight struck him! Why did the format of this thing resemble a key-value pair? Although it didn't use the familiar colons and equal signs to connect them, there was a special symbol connecting the two words on each line.

As a programmer in his previous life, Allen was all too familiar with this. Although key-value pairs might sound difficult to understand, they were everywhere in daily life, for example:

Name: Allen Fiennes;

Gender: Male;

Year of Birth: 1991;

This is a common key-value pair. "Name" is the key, and "Allen Fiennes" is the value. The key is fixed, but the value can vary.

This is the most familiar and fundamental data structure for programmers.

Allen couldn't help but fall into deep thought. Why would something similar to a key-value pair appear when casting a spell?

He frowned tightly, feeling like he was on the verge of understanding something but couldn't quite grasp it.

Suddenly, he remembered the role of key-value pairs when he was doing software development in his previous life: key-value pairs were the main format for data interaction between various computer systems and terminals.

Interaction?!!

Allen's gaze suddenly fixed.

What needs to interact?

At this moment, he suddenly recalled what Professor McGonagall had said about the essence of magic: a wizard's ability to cast magic was due to the wizard's own resonance with this world!

So, the purpose of the key-value pairs on the light screen is to interact and transmit information during resonance. What is the use of transmitting this information?

Does this world have a will?

Allen pondered, constantly recalling various theories about magic in this world.

Suddenly, he understood everything!

The four elements of casting!

The correct incantation and specific wand movements are information, the caster's subjective awareness of the spell's effect is also information, and the caster's certain level of focus is for better resonance with the world's will and better transmission of information.

Allen thought of the light wave when the light screen shattered at the moment the spell ended. Was this sending information to the world's will?

He also recalled what Professor Dumbledore had said about the function of wands:

The purpose of a wand is to make the connection between a wizard and the world's will closer!

The appearance of wands greatly lowered the threshold for casting magic, giving many wizards with less strong magical talent the opportunity to master magic!

Allen stared intently at his wand, feeling an urge to break it open and examine its internal structure, but he resisted.

He continued to ponder.

A closer connection with the world's will?

Connection?!!

Allen completely understood everything. Wizards with strong magical talent could cast spells wandlessly because they were strong enough to send sufficient information to the world's will, while those with less talent needed to use auxiliary means—that is, wands—to send sufficient information to the world's will.

To put it simply, people with less talent found themselves an "antenna" to help them send information.

Allen looked at his wand. You know, it really does look like an "antenna"!

So, why do wizards go to such great lengths to send information to the world's will?

The answer is obvious.

To cast magic!
