Chapter 23 - Chapter 23 Tracing the Origin

Having figured everything out, Allen felt a bit disheartened. Although he understood the mechanism of casting magic in this world, its help to him right now seemed very limited.

It's like every middle school student knows the principle of making a nuclear bomb, but if you were actually asked to build one, you'd probably be completely lost.

Learning magic is the same. Knowing the mechanism of casting spells only allows one to cast spells better and perhaps increase one's learning speed, but these aids are limited. He was still far behind those genius wizards.

Allen couldn't help but feel a little discouraged at this thought. He had put in so much effort only to gain so little, which made him very uncomfortable.

"No, don't I still have the characters in the notebook?"

"But it doesn't seem to be of any use!"

Although Allen couldn't understand the information in these characters, he knew with his toes that these key-value pair messages must be a transcription of his subjective consciousness regarding the spell's effect when he cast it.

For example, when Allen casts a Lumos charm, the information about the effect of the Lumos charm he imagines in his mind will be converted into key-value pairs:

Light Sphere Size: 1 inch;

Light Sphere Color: White;

Light Sphere Position: Wand Tip;

...

Then, by sending out these messages, the world's will would instantly materialize various magical effects. If there was a problem with the data transmission, the spell would fail, or even cause a magical accident.

"If that's all it is, why would I look at these characters in the notebook that no one can understand? Can't I just read a magic book? Every spell is clearly explained there, and there are teachers to explain it. Why should I put in so much effort to study something for which I already know the answer?" Allen thought, distressed.

He casually flipped through the notebook, feeling very depressed, as if he had been happy for nothing.

Suddenly, his gaze narrowed. He noticed that the key-value pairs in the notebook were not one-to-one; some key-value pairs were empty!

"Could it be that some keys haven't been used yet?"

Allen felt his spirits lift again, but soon he gave a bitter smile: he had to translate all these characters to verify whether his idea was correct.

At this moment, a sudden change occurred!

The characters on the notebook became unstable, and then began to spontaneously combust!

Allen quickly took the notebook and patted it against the wall to extinguish the fire, but the fire grew larger and larger. Allen had no choice but to throw it into the washbasin and turn on the faucet to douse it, but the fire on the notebook didn't seem to be ordinary natural fire. No matter how much water he poured, it wouldn't go out. Allen watched as his notebook turned into a pile of black ashes in the water.

"Could it be that these characters all have magical effects? And ordinary parchment can't bear them, so they spontaneously combusted?" Allen pondered, stroking his chin. His intuition told him this explanation was correct.

"It seems I still need to experiment more! I feel like this direction is very promising." Allen secretly made up his mind.

At this moment, Allen suddenly realized an important question:

"Today's eyes appeared randomly, so next time they appear randomly, won't they disappear when I sleep tonight?"

Allen quickly walked out of the washroom and saw the clock on the tower, realizing it was almost 12 o'clock.

"I must speed up, or else I won't sleep tonight, and then the talent transformation won't happen again."

His top priority now was to gather more information about this eye and figure out what kind of creature's eye it was. Allen quickly thought to himself, feeling less uncomfortable now.

The first people Allen thought of were Professor McGonagall and Professor Dumbledore.

So he hurried towards Professor McGonagall's office, forgetting what he looked like, which drew exclamations from many young wizards.

But he didn't care about that much and practically "burst" into Professor McGonagall's office.

Professor McGonagall frowned as she looked at the disheveled Allen: "Mr. Phineas, have you been fighting someone and come to complain?"

Allen then realized with a start that his chest was covered in bloodstains, his body was covered in various dust, and his face was pale. He looked as if he had just been in a fight, and had lost.

He quickly explained, "Nothing, I just fell!"

Professor McGonagall looked at Allen with a look of disbelief: "Mr. Phineas, Hogwarts does not permit campus violence. You can tell me the truth!"

"Nothing, I really just fell!" Allen quickly argued.

Although still not entirely convinced, Professor McGonagall waved her wand and used a Cleaning Charm to help Allen clean his robes and face, making him appear less disheveled.

At this moment, Allen's eyes widened in surprise—he also saw the light screen appear on Professor McGonagall's wand! He also saw the characters flowing on the light screen.

"These eyes can actually see the information others send out when they cast spells!"

"That's too powerful! You know, there are many ancient pure-blood wizarding families in the magical world. Many of their spells are not easily passed on, but perhaps if I just remember their incantations and wand movements when they cast spells, and then deduce their subjective consciousness during casting based on the information on the light screen and the magical effects, wouldn't I be able to master their closely guarded secrets?"

Allen's mind immediately conjured an image of himself chasing after wizards from various families for friendly "exchanges" of magic. As long as they cast a complete spell in front of him, he would learn it with just one glance.

"This ability is truly one that makes everyone 'pregnant'!"

Allen chuckled foolishly, while Professor McGonagall unceremoniously smacked him awake.

"What are you thinking about? What's the matter today?" Professor McGonagall asked with a cold face.

Allen then realized something was wrong. How should he tell Professor McGonagall? If he said he could see the information when casting magic, he was afraid he would immediately be taken to a magical institution for research, and he probably wouldn't even be able to attend school.

"I need to come up with an excuse quickly." Allen's mind raced.

"It's like this, I feel that the eye that appeared from the wand's talent transformation today is a bit off. I think it's the eye of a magical creature, so…" Allen hadn't finished speaking when he was immediately interrupted by Professor McGonagall.

She reached out and lifted Allen's chin, carefully examining his eyes, and after a long moment, she said, "It really does look like it."

Allen quickly added, "You said in class before that we can't transfigure magical items or creatures, which is why I thought of coming to you."

Professor McGonagall released Allen, "You pay attention in class, but you misunderstood. Ordinary items or animals cannot be transfigured into magical items or animals, but wizards are also a type of magical creature. Theoretically, they can also be transfigured into magical creatures, but this is only theoretical!" Professor McGonagall added.

Allen was stunned for a moment, feeling a bit lost.

"Don't be scared off. Such examples are rare in the magical world, and your situation is also very uncommon and has great research value. However, unfortunately, we cannot take samples of the eye. We would never harm our own students," Professor McGonagall explained.

"Then what animal do you think my eyes look like?" Allen finally had the chance to ask this question.

Professor McGonagall pondered for a moment, looking at Allen's eyes and said:

"A Thunderbird!"
