Chapter 6 - Lost Memories

The decision was made. Elena had accepted her destiny as the Guardian. However, that acceptance didn't erase the nagging questions in her mind, especially regarding her own memories. The flashes that appeared in Chapter 1, fragments that felt so important yet too blurry to grasp, now felt more urgent. She knew there was a part of herself, of her mission, that was still hidden.

Lysandra, having received Elena's answer, no longer projected images of future civilizations. Instead, the pillar of light in the center of the Main Control Center began to emit more complex energy patterns, interacting with the transparent consoles around it.

To fully embrace your role as Guardian, you must understand yourself. Your fragmented memories are a barrier. We will restore them. Lysandra's telepathic voice flowed into Elena's mind.

"How? Is it safe?" Elena asked, feeling apprehensive. Her memories were the only things she had left of Earth. If something went wrong, she could lose everything.

The Technological Oasis has the capacity to access and reconstruct biological memory. The process is not without risk, but it is a necessary step. Your memories are not just yours; they are a part of the history you must carry.

Lysandra waved her luminous hand towards one of the nearest consoles. The console transformed, revealing a circular platform large enough for Elena to stand on. Above the platform, a thin strand of silver light began to swirl, emitting gentle energy waves.

"Will this hurt?" Elena asked, hesitating.

The process will be intense. You will re-experience. But you are not alone. Unit-X will be your anchor.

Elena looked at Unit-X, which was now emitting a soft blue light from its core, as if the AI was also preparing itself. She felt her bio-synaptic connection with Unit-X strengthen, as if an invisible bond was tightening between them. A strange thought popped into her head: did Unit-X also have memories hidden from her?

Taking a deep breath, Elena stepped onto the platform. The strand of silver light enveloped her, spinning faster and faster. She felt an intense tingling sensation throughout her body, followed by pressure on her forehead, much stronger than when she had interacted with the light entity in the pool.

The Past Unveiled

The world around her faded. Lysandra's light pillar, the consoles, even the Architect's telepathic voice, all vanished. She was pulled into a swirling void, not the cold emptiness of stasis, but an emptiness filled with flickering fragments.

Images began to appear, flickering like a broken film projector. First, she saw a laboratory, full of advanced equipment, swirling blue holograms. She saw herself, much younger, wearing a technician's uniform, with an early version of Unit-X hovering beside her. She was working on a large machine, which looked like the core of a ship.

Those are the first memories before your departure, Unit-X's voice, now speaking directly inside her head, explained. You were the lead engineer for the Exodus Alpha navigation project.

Elena saw herself working tirelessly, surrounded by colleagues. Faces she knew, whom she thought she had forgotten: Marcus, the always-smiling lead technician; Lena, the quiet, genius AI expert; Captain Kael, the authoritative fleet commander. Each face brought a wave of nostalgia and sadness. All of them, she was certain, were gone.

The scene shifted. Now she was on Earth, but not the dying Earth. This was Earth in a better past, with blue skies, towering skyscrapers, and lush parks. She saw her home, a small apartment with windows overlooking a bustling city. She saw her family, her smiling parents, her mischievous younger brother.

Your childhood. Before Earth's total collapse.

Tears streamed down Elena's cheeks, real tears this time, wetting her face. She re-experienced the warmth of her mother's embrace, her father's laughter, and the joy of playing with her brother. These were memories she thought were lost forever. The pain of that loss, after briefly experiencing happiness again, felt incredibly piercing.

However, the scene changed again. The once-bustling cities were now shrouded in a thick haze, the sky dark with pollution. People wore masks, and the streets were filled with protests. Food was scarce, resources limited, and social tensions mounted.

The collapse of civilization. The fight over resources. The Earth Federation failed to manage the crisis.

Elena saw herself, older and more tired, working under immense pressure in the lab, trying to find solutions for a dying planet. She saw how the leaders of the Earth Federation, who initially promised hope, now became symbols of corruption and incompetence. The decision to build Exodus Alpha was made in desperation, a secret mission to save the remnants of humanity.

Then, a more crucial scene emerged. Elena, Captain Kael, and several core technicians were in a control room, facing a holographic star map.

"The Xylos-7 signal is strengthening," Captain Kael said in the memory, his voice filled with hope. "This must be the signal from the Technological Oasis mentioned in the ancient reports."

"Ancient reports?" Elena, in the memory, asked.

"Legends we found in ancient artifacts. About a distant civilization, the Architects, who promised to preserve the seeds of life if other civilizations ever failed," Captain Kael explained. "It sounds like a fairytale, but this signal... it's real."

This memory was key knowledge erased from your mind before stasis, to maintain mission integrity and avoid mass panic, Unit-X explained. The mention of Architects, the Technological Oasis, and the Seeds were highly sensitive information. Only the core crew knew about the true ultimate objective.

So, she had known about the Architects. The information had been hidden, not lost. A block intentionally placed. A decision, most likely by Captain Kael and the core team, to protect her.

The scene continued. They were preparing the stasis pods. Alarms blared throughout the complex. Earth trembled, and the sound of explosions echoed in the distance.

"The Devourers are reaching the atmosphere!" someone yelled.

Elena gasped. Devourers. The void creatures that destroyed the Architects' civilization. They had reached Earth. That was the real reason Exodus Alpha was accelerated. Not just because Earth was dying from within, but because of an unseen external threat.

She saw herself running towards her stasis pod, with Marcus and Lena by her side. Panic was everywhere. People were pushing and shoving, trying to reach their pods.

"Elena, you have to get in!" Marcus shouted, pushing her. "We'll follow you!"

She entered the pod. Lena, with a pale face, gave a sad smile. "Take care, Elena. See you on Xylos-7."

And then, she saw it. A thread of light, precisely like the one Lysandra emitted, extending from a small device on the wall of her pod, penetrating her brain, and... erasing the memory. It was an Architect protocol, integrated into the stasis system.

Memory erasure was a vital step to maintain psychological stability during extended stasis, Unit-X explained. And to conceal critical information from unauthorized parties if the pod was discovered. Only one pod was tagged with a special trigger signal to be contacted by the Technological Oasis.

So, she was chosen even before she entered stasis. It wasn't just luck. It was part of an intricate plan. She was the true 'star seed guardian,' a seed that had been programmed to find a home and activate other seeds.

The Whole Truth

The vision ended. Elena staggered, the platform dissolving beneath her feet. She fell to the floor, gasping for breath, soaked in cold sweat. Her head reeled, but this time not from disorientation, but from the flood of memories.

Lysandra remained standing in the pillar of light, observing her. You now understand most of your destiny. And the burden you carry.

"They all... they died because of the Devourers?" Elena asked, her voice broken.

Most likely. Only a handful of ships managed to escape, but they did not have the coordinates to this Oasis. Only your pod was set to receive the call.

The pain of that loss, now exacerbated by the clear details, felt like a fresh wound. Her parents, her brother, Marcus, Lena, Captain Kael... they were all gone. Not because of mission failure, but because of something larger, something that threatened the entire universe.

However, amidst the grief, there was also a newfound clarity. She wasn't just a survivor. She was an extension of those who had fallen, a bearer of hope for the future.

"Unit-X," Elena looked up. "You knew all of this?"

This data is part of my core protocol, encrypted until your biological memories were restored. I could not share it prematurely, to maintain protocol integrity. But yes, I had all of this information.

This explained why Unit-X never showed emotion, why its responses were always precise and data-driven. It was an AI designed to protect and guide her, even if it meant hiding a painful truth.

An idea struck Elena. "What about the data on the Devourers? What do you know about them, Lysandra?"

Lysandra's light pillar flickered. Information about the Devourers is extremely dangerous data. It can cause mass despair. Only those who are ready should know it. That is why we placed that memory block on you. But now, as Guardian, you must know the full truth.

A nearby console lit up, displaying a complex three-dimensional simulation. It was a depiction of the universe, with blinking energy points. And then, from the darkness beyond the galaxy, shadows began to creep in, extinguishing stars one by one. The Devourers.

They are ancient forces that cannot be destroyed, only avoided. Their cycle is inevitable. They will return.

Elena stared at the simulation, her heart filled with a cold dread. Her new role felt increasingly heavy. She not only had to revive humanity, but also prepare them for this unstoppable threat.

"How... how can we survive them?"

That is the question you must answer. You, with the other civilizations that will be revived. We have given you the Oasis. We have given you knowledge. Now, your task is to find a way to transcend this cycle of destruction. To be better than us.

Elena rose to her feet, her legs still shaky, but her determination burned bright. She was the last survivor of a shattered Earth, the only one carrying hope. The painful memories were now her strength. She knew who she was, where she came from, and what she had to fight for.

She looked at Lysandra. "Then, let's begin Project Omega. Let's revive them. And let's teach them to fight this inevitable destiny."
