My heart pounded as I heard Imogen's voice on the other end of the line. My carefully guarded secret identity was in danger of being exposed.
"Dr. South gave me her phone to answer while she's busy," I lied smoothly. "What do you want, Imogen?"
"Don't call me that! I'm Isla Johnson to you," she hissed. "I need to speak with Dr. Emma Bella immediately."
The irony nearly made me laugh. If only she knew she was already talking to the woman she so desperately wanted to reach.
"Dr. Emma Bella is unavailable," I replied coolly. "I can take a message."
"Listen to me, you worthless nobody," Isla spat into the phone. "I know your little nickname is 'Emma' now. Trying to steal another identity, are we? First playing the poor little illegitimate daughter for sympathy, and now trying to leech off the Bella name?"
So that was it. She'd discovered my work nickname and jumped to conclusions.
"The Bella name?" I asked, feigning ignorance.
