I could see the wheels turning in Nathaniel's mind as he processed my words. His expression softened almost imperceptibly, and I felt the tension in the room ease.
"You never mentioned saving Daphne Beaumont," he said quietly.
I shrugged, uncomfortable with his scrutiny. "It wasn't relevant. I just happened to be there when she needed help."
"And now her brother feels indebted to you." Nathaniel ran a hand through his hair. "That explains his behavior today."
"I don't want his gratitude," I said firmly. "And I certainly didn't ask him to push for Liam's promotion."
Nathaniel studied me for a moment longer, then nodded. "I believe you."
The simple statement caught me off guard. Three words, yet they felt significant coming from a man who trusted almost no one.
"Good," I replied, unsure what else to say.
An awkward silence fell between us. I turned back to my research, expecting him to leave, but he remained in the doorway, watching me.
