Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Forged In Moonlight

Ike had done it; he had registered himself as an adventurer at the guild. Just then, the clerk told him something that he had probably anticipated: "You do need to do an exam before you can take on a quest from the board, but for that, you need a weapon." The clerk added, "Also, are you by any chance a Sir issac johnson? Your name lines up here on the info sheet, and there's a rumor that your parents are looking for you."

As the clerk mentioned Ike's parents, Ike was confused. Why would his parents be in a fantasy world, especially one where he was younger? Then, out of nowhere, he remembered something. The memory wasn't his, but it seemed too vivid to not be his either.

Then he saw the memory:

Johnson estate, some time ago

Ike saw through his own eyes two people, whom he recognized as his parents.

"Issac, son," The man Ike had presumed as his father spoke, "are you sure you want to go on the expedition?" he asked firmly. "Yes, father, I'm sure," a voice came out of Ike's mouth. It was his voice, if not a bit younger. "Are you really sure?" his mother asked, with a worried expression on her face. "You're almost of the age to go to the Imperial University, isn't it a ridiculous idea to go on an expedition to the old capital now?" She asked, awaiting his answer. "I'll be fine, the only thing that could happen at the old capital is a minor case of mana sickness."

The memory then progressed a bit more, now in a forested area, riddled with ruins of what looked like a city. "Man, the mana sure is dense around here," a man told Ike, as if trying to pass the time. "Yeah, I'd almost be sick if it weren't for these mana necklaces," Ike answered. Just then, a figure had appeared standing in midair. The figure said something Ike couldn't hear, and then everything turned black.

Then the memory changed again; now, Ike was running through a forest, and although he somewhat recognized the forest, he still had no idea where he was running. After running for a while, Ike had laid down on his back and tried to sleep.

The next thing he remembered after that was waking up in the forest, seeing the system, and getting attacked by the wolf.

"Oh yeah," Ike told the clerk, "could you please tell them I'm alright?" He asked him.

"Sure thing," the clerk replied, "though you really should get yourself a weapon."

"Will do." Ike said as he rushed towards the door.

---

let'ssee, Ike thought as he was walking through the city toward a blacksmith's shop, which he was recommended to go to by Albert, called "Gnorf's hammer". this is what iv'e got, huh? he wondered while rummaging inside his inventory:

[Inventory]

Mana-Wood Branch (Rare) x1

Rusty Sword Blade (mythical) x1

Canteen (One-use) x4

Upl Cred x2

Cred x9

I guess Cred is the common currency in this world, and Upl is probably the word for ten here. ike thought, since it was weird to him that the coins weren't just called coins, but cred. Then he realized he had arrived at the Smithy.

---

Master Gnorf Ironbrew was a great blacksmith, honored by every craftsman in Oakenridge and even the lord himself. Despite that fact, he couldn't forge anything he found worthy. The problem wasn't the quality of the weapons, as he felt that if he sold them to an adventurer, they'd be just fine, more than fine in some cases, but it still bugged him that nothing seemed right about them. Just then, his assistant, a young elf, young for elf standards that is, burst into the room. "What is it this time, Julian?" Gnorf asked the assistant, annoyed at the fact that he was disturbed while thinking.

"Master Gnorf!" Julian couldn't contain his excitement, "There's someone with... w-well... You have to see it yourself."

Gnorf raised a bushy eyebrow. It wasn't every day his assistant was so worked up; it was probably better to investigate himself.

---

Ike stood at the front desk of the smithy with a puzzled look on his face. all he'd done was ask the clerk if he could appraise the materials he had found. When he showed the clerk the blade and the branch he had found, the clerk gasped loudly and then ran off somewhere, leaving Ike standing in the shop alone. A couple of minutes had passed with nothing happening when suddenly Ike heard footsteps, but there were now two sets of footsteps. The clerk, an elf, had returned. But now with him was a dwarf; he had a large grey beard, indicating that he was, in fact, quite old, yet he looked younger than his beard suggested.

"What do we have here?" the dwarf asked while looking towards the Front desk.

"Well, I found this stick and this sword while in the forest a couple of days ago, and I wanted to ask a blacksmith what they were," Ike explained his situation to the best of his ability.

"This is..." The dwarf said, shocked. "I know, right?" the elf blurted right after

"It's Mythril!" they both proclaimed at once. "It's Mythril?" Ike asked, not knowing how to react, "So that's what is meant when it said 'Mythical quality'," he blurted without thinking.

"Did you just say it was a mythical quality item?" The dwarf asked Ike, "Then how is it rusted? First, mythril can't rust, and second, a mythical item is one of the highest quality an item can be; it shouldn't be mythical if it's rusted."

"I don't know, I just found it stuck in some wolf," Ike said, trying to deflect the questions, since he didn't know the answers. "Can you please also examine the Branch?" Ike asked, as, after all, he had brought both items to be examined.

"Sure," the dwarf said, annoyed at the deflection from Ike, "Let's see...!" The dwarf started looking at the branch, "This is a Mana-Wood branch, it is also of a high quality, I'm impressed." The Dwarf exhaled, almost as if a curse was lifted from him. "Name's Gnorf, by the way," he told Ike.

"Nice to meet you, I'm Ike," replied Ike, who was still confused about the fact that the rusted blade he had found in a half-dead wolf was so important. "I'm looking for a weapon. preferably something beginner-friendly, although I would like it not to be a spear, too cliché."

Gnorf, still surprised that Ike had brought him not only a mythril blade and a mana wood branch, was also looking for a weapon, asked, "How about i make you a sword from these?" while gesturing at the excellent materials on the counter. "How much will it cost me? I don't have much," Ike asked, worried that he couldn't afford a weapon. "It will cost you Nothing," Gnorf replied in a very confident tone. "Really?" Ike asked, shocked. "Yes, really," Gnorf assured him, "I get to make someone a weapon using Mythril and Mana-Wood."

"Well, thanks, I guess." Ike said, confounded by the offer. "It's about time I made something Legendary again." Gnorf sighed

---

The forge Blazed Late into the night.

Sparks danced throughout the smithy as Gnorf hammered away, pouring everything he knew into making the blade. Soon, the room was filled with smoke and the taste of metal in the air as the mythril blade was reforged. Ike watched in awe as, hour after hour, the expert craftsmanship. He had only seen this stuff in Games or movies; it was hard to believe the sight of the smithing.

When the moon was at its highest, and the clock struck midnight, the blade was finished.

it was glowing in the moonlight, but it needed to cool before it could be used.

---

Ike woke up the next morning at dawn in the smithy. Sitting in the chair beside him was Gnorf, half awake after the long night of forging. "Good morning," Ike said, half asleep.

"Ah, you're awake," Gnorf muttered, "I should probably finish your sword."

Minutes later, ike was holding a brand new sword, it was dark turquoise in color, and in fact very light. Ike swung it around to test it, when Gonrf suggested something: "Why don't you give your new sword a name?"

"what about, Dawnbreaker?"

"Taken. Farsooth's sword"

"Blue needle?"

"too generic"

"uh... Moonfang? Since the blade was finished under the full moon, and i found the blade in a wolf."

Gnorf, impressed with the name given to the sword exclaimed "now that's got a ring to it"

A familiar chime rang in Ike's ears.

[Item obtained]

Would you like to view the description? [Y/N]

"yes" Ike said to the system window

[MoonFang]

a sword Forged from Mythical metal and the branch of a Mana-Wood tree, under the light of the full moon. The first sword of the hyperion.

Str: +20

Int:  +5

This weapon can channel mana and aura.

Ike stared at the screen of the system, dumbfounded. 20 Strength?! and 5 Intelligence?! This is one hell of a deal. He thought the stats on the sword were amazing. And it could channel mana, something he didn't know swords could do. He wasn't sure what aura was, but he was sure he would find out later.

"finally..." He muttered, "I can become an adventurer."
