Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Guild exams

As Ike arrived at the adventurers' guild, he was once again in awe at the giant structure before him. he readied himself as he, for a second time, walked through the giant guild doors. He approached the front desk, where the clerk from the previous day was still on duty. When he got to the front desk, the clerk recognized him. "Good morning," the clerk said to Ike as Ike approached. "What business do you have with the guild today, Sir?"

"i'd like to learn more about the exam please" Ike asked calmly, although in his head he was more nervous than ever. "well," the clerk started explaining, "there are three part to the exam: first is registering, second and third are either the written or practical exams, you have to do them both, but the order doesnt matter."

"Well, then I want to take the practical exam as soon as possible, and then the written exam right after, is that alright?" Ike asked the clerk.

"Sure, today's practical exam is in 30 minutes, and you can take the written exam anytime," The clerk answered

"Great, thank you," ike told the clerk after he got his answer, "but where's the practical exam being held?"

"The guild arena," the clerk told Ike.

---

30 minutes later, Oakenridge Guild Arena

"Alright," a man in the middle of the arena spoke, "this is going to go as follows: you will each come here to the center one at a time, duel with the instructor for your class and then be given a rank based on preformence, although the rank in the test is only equivalent to half of an actual rank, meaning if you get S on the exam, you will start as a B rank adventurer, and if you get an F you start as an F rank, Got it?"

"Yes, sir!" one guy shouted while doing a salute, probably someone who was in the military. The rest of the examinees, including Ike, just nodded. The man at the center of the arena started talking again. "Then let me introduce your examiners: melee classes are with me, Ishveel; ranged classes with Ivolna; magic classes with Milonk; and last but not least, summoning classes with Vernam," Ishveel explained, "I'll start calling names now. Issac johnson." Ike was confused. Why am I first to go? he thought to himself, worried at what would happen if he were to fail in front of the other examinees. Now's not the time to be stressed, he said Even if you get an F, you will still become an adventurer.

Ike walked to the center of the arena. "ok, kid, I heard from our desk guy that you're a noble, so I'm not going to go easy on you, but first, why don't you shake my hand?" Ishveel asked, "Also, I'm going to have to ask, what's your class?"

just as Ike was about to shake Ishveel's hand, a system window appeared:

[class change initiated]

[Please select a class]

[You can select any class, as you are an administrator]

"I'm a..." Ike paused. fearing that this decision was permanent.

[You can change class later using a class rank-up quest.]

"Swords-mage," Ike answered confidently.

[Your [Class] has changed into [Swords-mage]]

[You have learned new skills]

Beginner's Sword Mastery (passive)

You have the most basic understanding of using a sword, very practical.

Spell Sling(active)

you can throw spells using your sword like a focus, or a bat.

Fire Bolt (active)

The most basic pyromantic spell, a small projectile of fire is created and sent to the target

"Swords-mage, you say?" Ishveel asked, surprised, "That's a hidden class, and you can only use mana channeling weapons with it, don't tell me..." Ike then pulled out Moonfang from its sheath. "You crazy kid, you actually have one. How much money did you spend on this sword?" Ishveel asked, now very curious about Ike. "Not a single cred," Ike replied, "Gnorf said he'd make it for free if I let him use the mythril I had."

"Mythril!" Isheveel shouted, "I guess you really are a noble to have mythril. Anyway, let's begin your test, but you're getting a special one, me and Milonk, versus you, but you get double the score, deal?"

"Deal," Ike replied.

Two minutes later,

Ike was standing at one side of the arena, while both examiners stood at the other side. ike readied his sword, when suddenly an idea hit him, why fight fair if everything's fair?

"ok," the referee shouted, "I'm going to count down from three, when i say go, you start."

"3!" Ike changed his pose to match his thoughts, "2!" Ishveel swung his sword around as if preparing a technique, "1!" Milonk seemed as if he was chanting something, "Go!"

Before either of the examiners could react, Ike was ready. He was standing in a pose reminiscent of that of a baseball batter, and when the referee said Go, Ike shouted "Firebolt!" Then, a small sphere of fire appeared in front of Ike, at which he swung at the ball with his sword, "Spell Sling!" Ike shouted again, and now the small ball was hurtling through the air towards Ishveel. And before he could react, the fire bolt hit him directly in the forehead, knocking him on his back. "Yes," Ike pumped his fist in success, then he started running towards the mage at his top speed. When he arrived at the second examiner, his spell was almost over, but Ike had an idea. He enabled enhanced perception and found the circle the mage was trying to cast, and cut through it with his sword, and it worked. The mage was on the ground panting like a dog, probably from the mana relapse. "The exam for applicant Issac Johnson is over," the referee declared. Ike then walked over to Ishveel and helped him up. "So, what's my score?" Ike asked Ishveel, who was wiping the dirt off his clothes, "Well, seeing as you beat both me and Milonk, who are both A ranks, in two seconds, I'm giving you..." Ike waited in anticipation to hear what rank he got, "a meeting with the guildmaster," Ishveel finished his sentence, "and disqualifying you from this test, you're just too strong for a beginner."

---

1 hour later, guildmaster's office

"so," the guildmaster said, her chair facing the window overlooking the guild yard, "Ishveel informed me that you, a level 3, somehow beat two A rank examiners in less than a minute." she turned her chair towards Ike, she was a short woman with hair the color of red fire, and she had a T-shirt on her, depicting a character Ike knew, he wasnt sure how a character from an anime was doing in a fantasy world, let alone on the guildmaster's shirt. Ike guessed she was a dwarf, but he wouldn't make assumptions until the system told him anything. She turned to her secretary, an elf, who looked very organized, wearing what seemed like a tailored suit. "Elzor, what's your opinion?" the guildmaster asked the secretary. "Well, I think it wasn't a fluke, a Swords-mage is rare, but not impossible, and their skills shine against most opponents. the weird part is his level, you shouldnt be able to be a Swords-mage before going through atleast three other classes, it is a unique-rank class after all that is obtained after reaching level 150 with the Swordsman class." elzor responded to the guildmaster. "so you're saying we have another anomaly?" the guildmaster asked. "shouldnt i have a say in this?" Ike interjected. "no." elzor cut him off, but just as he was about to answer the guildmaster if Ike was an anomaly, "let's give him a chance to talk" the guildmaster stopped elzor from speaking. "well, first i have a question since i seem to have lost some of my memories, what rank is the johnson family in the imperial nobility?" Ike asked, both the guildmaster and elzor were stunned, this man, a noble, didnt know his own rank? what sort of joke is this? they thought. "well," elzor started answering, but he was cut off by the guildmaster, "how could you not know your own rank, for the gods sake, youre the son of an earl, and your mother is the daughter of duke elborne!" Ike was surprised by the fact that his parents held such standing. "thanks. Now I'll answer you what happened, you see, I just chose the class today, all i got was a prompt, and then I got my class skills," He answered.

"Well, do you know what the three arts are?" The guildmaster asked Ike, "No?" Ike said, confused. "Well, there are three combat arts: aura, magic or mana, and sorcery. aura and mana are two sides of the same coin; they're magical forces controlled by the body. Aura is for physical actions, like an aura blade. Mana is for magic, like a fireball. As for sorcery, everyone is born with a unique sorcery; it transcends reason, so it varies per person. We also call sorcery: 'Skills', and the unique sorcery given at birth is called a Unique skill," The guildmaster explained. "So," ike started asking, "Do you know what an admin is?" "Yes, they're people with special access to the system," Elzor answered, "why do you ask?"

"No reason, just curious because I heard someone say they met one."

system. ike thought to himself, trying to pull up the window subtly. How many admins are there over the age of 16? As the thought crossed his mind, the system chymed in his ear:

Including administrator "Isaac 'Ike' Johnson" there are 12 administrators over the age of 16 and 30 total administrators

"Well, I think that's enough questions for now," The guildmaster noted. "But, that doesn't mean you're off scot free," she pointed at Ike "Elzor, I'm assigning him a quest instead of the exams"
