~~~~~~~~~[extra chapter]
It was already the sixth day of the mission. Lucien D. Blackthorn had just completed all nine chapters of the first volume of Slam Dunk and handed the final draft to Eriri.
He had been lucky. One night, his body awakened unexpectedly, and he used the full two-hour window granted by the system to draw. In that brief sliver of freedom, he completed three entire chapters.
That unexpected boost allowed him to barely finish the volume on time.
The schedule was brutally tight.
Lucien had anticipated this outcome, which was why he had asked Eriri to begin uploading the chapters in advance, to build early hype and visibility.
According to her updates, the first eight episodes had already accumulated nearly 17,000 views online.
Lucien looked at the numbers, his heart brimming with cautious hope.
Once the final chapter is uploaded tonight… I should cross the 20,000-view threshold by tomorrow. If nothing goes wrong…
A fragile smile crept onto his lips.
The first volume of Slam Dunk was done. Completing this mission would grant him ten more days of life.
Given the quality of the work, Lucien estimated that the system might even rate it as an S or higher. If so, he could expect a bonus—possibly extending his life by 12 or even 14 days.
That means… I'll have nearly a full month of life remaining.
Finally… I can breathe again.
What Lucien didn't realize, however, was that even if his life span was extended, his physical body was still incredibly fragile—on the brink of collapse. Without an increase in his health value, he couldn't survive another serious episode.
Sure enough, only minutes after completing the upload process, an intense wave of pain surged through every inch of his body.
It felt as though every bone had been crushed.
This wasn't the usual dull ache—this was something far worse.
Lucien's vision turned white. The stabbing, electric agony raged in his joints, his spine, and deep into his marrow.
He trembled and reached for the emergency alarm by the bed. With the last of his strength, he pressed it.
Then, his consciousness faded.
---
The alarm rang sharply through the hospital corridor.
Lucien's parents were the first to burst into the room. Panic and fear gripped their faces.
Moments later, the medical staff stormed in behind them.
"Patient's vitals are unstable. Heart rate dropping rapidly!"
"Cancer cells are still aggressively spreading. Nerve compression and bone metastasis confirmed. Pain source localized across multiple tissue systems."
"He needs radiation therapy as soon as possible!"
Targeted drug therapy alone wasn't enough anymore. Without chemotherapy and radiation, the metastasis would spiral beyond control.
As emergency treatment began, the doctors pushed Lucien's parents—out of the room. They waited outside the ward in helpless agony.
Watching the chaos behind the glass, Lucien's dad clenched his fists.
"When will the new targeted drug arrive?" he asked.
"I've already called every contact I have. It should be here in two days, tops," Lucien's mom replied, her voice trembling.
"Please… let him hold on until then…"
"He will. He has to. Oh, by the way, darling, I haven't had the chance to tell you this…"
"What is it?" she asked, glancing sideways at him.
"I got news from the research team in the U.S. It's… not good."
"Tell me," she said calmly. "I can take it."
"They said that after about six months of use, the body often develops resistance to this targeted drug. After that, it becomes ineffective."
"…And?"
"Then, unless he switches to a next-gen formula, the treatment stops working. But those are still in clinical trials—it could take years before they're commercially available."
"In other words…" she whispered, "…he can only last six more months at best?"
"Yes. That's the most optimistic estimate."
They both fell silent, their hearts heavy with dread.
After a long moment, Lucien's dad broke the silence.
"I contacted an old friend. He introduced me to a renowned herbalist in Kyoto. I'll go there next week. Until then… I'll need you to look after Lucien on your own."
Lucien's mom nodded quietly. "I will."
---
That night, back at home, Eriri Spencer Sawamura—pen name Eri Kashiwagi—uploaded the final chapter of Slam Dunk.
The story had reached a turning point.
Sakuragi Hanamichi, after an accidental moment of brilliance, had performed a powerful dunk and officially joined the school basketball team. He imagined himself as the future star who would carry the team to the national championship.
But things didn't go as planned.
His basic skills were severely lacking. Captain Akagi Takenori and team manager Ayako immediately assigned him to foundational dribbling drills.
Feeling humiliated and underappreciated, Sakuragi was furious.
"Stupid gorilla captain!" he fumed internally. "They're picking on me on purpose!"
In a fit of rage, he threatened to quit the team.
---
After uploading the chapter, Eriri sat at her desk and re-read the entire first volume.
From the very first page, she found herself chuckling. The comedic timing was perfect. Sakuragi's exaggerated expressions and ridiculous confidence made him oddly lovable.
She laughed out loud more than once.
But when she reached the final page, she paused.
Something's missing, she thought.
Not in a technical sense—Lucien's draft was excellent. The pacing was solid, the humor sharp, and the character designs full of personality.
But emotionally, it didn't quite hit the same level as Attack on Titan—Lucien's other masterpiece.
Attack on Titan had gripped readers from the first page with its explosive start. Slam Dunk, while impressive, was slower, lighter, and less intense in comparison.
Still, as a sports manga, Slam Dunk easily surpassed most titles in its genre.
That much was undeniable.
Eriri leaned back in her chair, arms crossed, deep in thought.
Whale… you really are incredible.
She knew Lucien was hiding his pain—working through a body that was deteriorating daily.
And yet, even in this state, he continued to create.
As she closed the browser and got ready for bed, she whispered:
"Please, let him make it through tomorrow…"
