Chapter 288 - Chapter 287: Interfering with Phasing — Hidden Mist Village Attacked

Light?

Obito's mind froze for a moment. Shigure could actually fire a laser?!

What kind of Ninjutsu was that?

Even so, Obito instinctively reacted—his body slipping into intangibility as he phased through the attack.

But a heartbeat later, the laser passed through his intangible form and struck an ice crystal behind him.

The moment it hit, the crystal refracted the beam—splitting it into three brilliant rays.

They scattered.

Then—

Dozens of surrounding ice spires—sharpened pillars jutting from the ground—caught the light. Ice mirrors carved by the Yuki Clan's mastery reflected the beam again and again.

In a flash—

A net of light unfolded, tightening around Obito like a cage.

He watched in growing alarm as beams ricocheted in unpredictable directions.

The next blast could come from anywhere—any angle.

Cold sweat beaded across his brow.

To use ice as mirrors for light refraction… Such a battlefield tactic was beyond anything he expected. Even Obito hadn't imagined a setup like this.

If he couldn't predict the attack's timing or direction, then he would be forced to maintain his phased state continuously.

And he couldn't stay intangible for long.

Frustration twisted through his gut. Against Shigure, all he could do was defend—he had yet to release a single offensive jutsu.

Then he noticed something else…

Mist—thin and creeping—had begun to spill across the ground, rising like a living thing.

What…? When had that appeared?

Just as Obito prepared to flicker away—to break free from the formation and regroup—his body materialized for a split second.

That single instant was all the mist needed.

It caught him.

A spike of dread shot through Obito—

Chirp!

A laser bore through his shoulder. Flesh tore. Bone cracked. A clean, smoking hole punched through his body.

Injured?

His eyes widened in disbelief. Not only was he hit—the mist itself had physically restrained him.

He phased again, slipping free—but the shock lingered. He sprang away, landing atop a towering ice spire.

Shigure remained calm as he watched Obito retreat.

"Scared?"

Obito didn't speak.

Yes… he was afraid. That strange light—too fast, too precise. Impossible to defend against.

But what terrified him more—why did every refracted beam hit exactly where he stood?

There were countless ice mirrors. Each one would reflect differently. Yet Shigure had calculated the perfect angles instantly—

Angles for multiple reflections.

Was this even something a human brain could compute in real time?

Shigure clicked his tongue.

"Shame it only hit your shoulder. I was aiming for your head."

If it had… Obito would likely be dead already.

Obito exhaled slowly, voice low:

"You're strong… a once-in-a-century genius."

He meant it. Ever since fusing Hashirama's cells, he had gained power great enough to threaten even the Fourth Hokage—his own mentor.

Yet this boy—seeing his Kamui for the first time—dominated him from start to finish.

Shigure suddenly smiled.

A chill ran down Obito's spine.

Of course he smiled.

Because the Great Sage had finished its calculations.

[Great Sage: Analysis complete]

In an instant, Shigure understood the method:

Use the power of his Fiery Red Eyes to disrupt Obito's phasing.

But the interference only worked on a specific part of Obito's body each time.

Which part? That was for Shigure to discover through observation.

He raised his hand—

Chirp!

A laser condensed and fired in the same heartbeat, piercing straight through Obito.

At that moment, the ocular interference took effect. Through his Fiery Red Eyes, Shigure noticed a detail:

Obito's left leg hadn't phased.

Ice crystals surged up from the ground, climbing and locking around the exposed limb.

Shigure's smile sharpened.

He pointed again.

Chirp!

The beam punched through Obito's left leg—shattering the ice and spilling blood.

Obito staggered, shock flashing in his eyes.

How…?

He was intangible. Nothing should have struck him while phasing.

Why?

Even Black Zetsu stared in disbelief.

He hit Obito while phasing! How is that possible?!

Kamui's phasing hid the body in another dimension. What remained in this world was merely a projected form—a shadow-body of chakra and light, intangible and immune to normal attacks.

So how did Shigure bypass that?

How?

Shigure chuckled coldly.

"I've found a way to deal with you. Better stay alert."

Yes, the materialized spot might change every time he interfered—but it didn't matter.

His Fiery Red Eyes would see it instantly.

Obito's fear deepened with every heartbeat.

"No one has ever hurt me like this. You're the first."

Shigure smirked.

"Relax—no one else will. Because you're not leaving."

Obito laughed under his breath.

"I'm afraid you won't have the luxury to focus on me anymore."

Boom—BOOM!

Explosions thundered through the village.

Shigure's expression shifted. He expanded his sensory perception—and immediately felt two powerful chakra signatures flaring inside Kirigakure.

The Hidden Mist shinobi were already converging.

Mei Terumī, now awake, was rushing toward the battlefield.

"You brought reinforcements too?" Shigure asked coldly.

Obito nodded.

"I came to negotiate with the Jinchūriki of three Tailed Beasts. Of course I didn't come alone."

Shigure raised his hand again—one more attack to force him into phasing, grab the materialized limb, and rip him out of Kamui's dimension.

But—

A swirling vortex spiraled around Obito's form.

He vanished.

"Until next time… Gekkō Shigure."
