Julian's POV
I lowered my lips to Aurelia's, unable to resist the pull any longer. The mate bond hummed between us as I pressed my mouth against hers. It felt right. Perfect. Like coming home after years of wandering.
My wolf surged forward, urging me to deepen the kiss, to reclaim what was ours. I cupped her face gently, careful of her bruises, and inhaled her sweet wildflower scent.
Suddenly, Aurelia's eyes flew open. For a split second, they reflected confusion. Then recognition dawned, followed by pure, unbridled fury.
She shoved against my chest with unexpected strength. "Get off me!"
I pulled back, startled by her reaction. "Aurelia—"
"How dare you?" She scrambled away from me, wincing as the movement aggravated her injuries. Her emerald eyes blazed with hatred. "How dare you touch me?"
My wolf growled, displeased by her rejection. "You're my mate."
"I was never your mate," she spat. "I was your burden. Your obligation. Your mistake."
