Chapter 9 - The Ghost at the Gala

VANESSA

The Grand Summit Hotel glittered like a fortress of crystal and gold. As our car pulled up to the entrance, I felt like I might throw up.

"I can't do this," I whispered, clutching Leo's arm.

My brother squeezed my hand reassuringly. "You look stunning, Nessa. No one will recognize you."

I smoothed down my emerald gown, a far cry from anything Ruby would have worn. The old me preferred tight, revealing outfits—desperate for attention. This dress was elegant, sophisticated. A statement that I wasn't that girl anymore.

"Where's Wesley?" I scanned the arriving guests anxiously. "He promised he'd meet us outside."

"Probably inside already. Alpha business and all that." Leo offered his arm. "Ready?"

No. Not even close. But I nodded anyway.

The grand ballroom was already packed with werewolves from every major pack in the region. Chandeliers dripped with crystals above round tables draped in white linens. Servers glided between clusters of guests with champagne flutes.
