Chronologically speaking, this seems to coincide with the Menos Grande incident.
However, considering that the Menos Grande was killed by Kyōraku Callum, the situation is rather unusual.
Of course, it's possible Aizen subsequently created second and third-generation Menos Grandes.
Or perhaps they were even stranger beings, like a first-generation white Shinigami and a second-generation black Shinigami.
"That's the situation," Kyōraku Shunsui said casually. "As for the Tenth Division, Lieutenant Matsumoto Rangiku and Third Seat Hitsugaya Tōshirō will temporarily take charge."
"Hitsugaya Tōshirō is a genius from the Central Academy, by the way. Kyōraku Callum, would you feel any pressure facing him?"
Kyōraku Callum scoffed, "You stupid old man, do you really think I'd feel pressure? Even if Hitsugaya possesses Soul Society's strongest ice-type Zanpakutō and limitless potential…"
"Right, I'm going to report to the Captain-Commander. My sentence is over," Kyōraku Callum said, preparing to leave.
Kyōraku Shunsui paused, recalling Kyōraku Callum's past feats. Watching Kyōraku Callum go, a thoughtful smile touched his whiskered face.
"Kyōraku Callum… he could already be the head of the Kyōraku family."
Clearly, the irresponsible Kyōraku Shunsui was already considering passing on some of his responsibilities.
Ever since Kyōraku Callum's fight with Kenpachi Zaraki five years prior, the so-called elders of the Kyōraku family had retreated into self-imposed slumber.
Their soul lifespans had reached their limits; sleep was the only way to sustain their lives. They had no objections to Kyōraku Callum as the next head of the family. He had proven himself.
First Division barracks. Kyōraku Callum arrived to find Vice-Captain Chōjirō Sasakibe just exiting, hurrying along, clutching a mountain of documents.
"Vice-Captain Kyōraku Callum," Chōjirō Sasakibe greeted.
"Vice-Captain Chōjirō," Kyōraku Callum replied. The ordinary encounter felt slightly off. Chōjirō Sasakibe seemed excessively busy. Kyōraku Callum shook his head, putting it aside for now. He proceeded directly to the Captain-Commander's office.
"Kyōraku Callum, you've arrived," Yamamoto-Genryūsai said, his tone softer than usual.
"Captain-Commander, I'm here regarding my sentence," Kyōraku Callum stated directly—the best approach with Yamamoto-Genryūsai.
"Yes, I understand," Yamamoto-Genryūsai nodded. "Your five-year sentence is over; your confinement is lifted."
"Thank you, Captain-Commander," Kyōraku Callum replied.
During the judgment, Yamamoto-Genryūsai had subtly favored Kyōraku Callum. A five-year confinement was inconsequential for a Shinigami.
Moreover, Kyōraku Callum hadn't been monitored by the Onmitsukido during those five years, nor was he required to report to the First Division. His punishment was, at most, a verbal warning. Kenpachi Zaraki, however, hadn't returned from the southern Rukongai border.
Silence settled over the room. Yamamoto-Genryūsai's steady breathing suggested he was considering something.
Just as Kyōraku Callum was about to leave, the old voice echoed through the office. "You know about the disappearance of Captain Shiba Isshin of the Tenth Division, don't you?"
Kyōraku Callum paused, then nodded. "Captain Kyōraku informed me."
Yamamoto-Genryūsai rested his hands on his cane. "Currently, only the Lieutenant and Third Seat are managing the Tenth Division's affairs. The Gotei 13 is short-staffed. I want you to become the Captain of the Tenth Division!"
Kyōraku Callum was taken aback. What did this mean? Why was he suddenly involved? Becoming Captain of the Tenth Division seemed incredibly rash.
"Your battle with Kenpachi has demonstrated much," Yamamoto-Genryūsai said. "You are fully qualified to be a Captain of the Gotei 13."
Kyōraku Callum considered this. After a moment, he shook his head.
"Captain-Commander, I must decline. I'm still unable to fully manage my duties as Vice-Captain of the Fourth Division, let alone as a Captain.
Furthermore, I hear that Third Seat Hitsugaya Tōshirō of the Tenth Division is exceptionally talented and dedicated to his duties."
The message was clear: he was busy and didn't want the added responsibility. Hitsugaya was a capable and dedicated replacement.
Yamamoto-Genryūsai fell into thought, his eyes flickering. After a while, he said, "I understand."
Kyōraku Callum nodded, rose, and left.
Let the capable handle the responsibilities. He had more pressing matters to attend to.
The World of the Living, Karakura Town. He'd visited several times during his confinement, but now, with his ban lifted, he had more freedom.
However, upon arrival, Kyōraku Callum's brow furrowed.
"There's an unusual amount of mixed spiritual pressure in the World of the Living.
Hollows and Shinigami spiritual pressure are intermingled." He sensed Hollows and Shinigami everywhere, a stark contrast to his previous visits.
Before, it had been a balance of hunting and being hunted. Now, it felt like the prelude to war.
The air was thick with the scent of Hollows; the Shinigami seemed to be on the defensive.
"Looks like I have another matter to investigate," Kyōraku Callum murmured, condensing spiritual particles beneath his feet to walk on air.
The spiritual particle density in the World of the Living was far lower than in Soul Society; stronger Shinigami could walk on air by condensing these particles.
Urahara Shop.
As if expecting him, Kisuke Urahara, wearing his fisherman's hat, waited on the roof.
