A violent blast of spiritual pressure erupted, sending ice shards flying! The outcome of the battle was clear.
"Impossible!"
The scene before him was a devastating blow to Hitsugaya Tōshirō's young mind.
He'd unleashed his strongest attack, a roaring ice dragon, unstoppable and fearless.
Yet, Kyōraku Callum's chantless Hadō #99, Goryūtenmetsu, had shattered the dragon into countless ice fragments, dissipating them into nothingness.
As Kyōraku Callum had predicted, the surroundings remained largely undamaged. The most significant destruction was minor craters where ice shards had struck the ground.
"How can the gap between us be so vast?"
Hitsugaya Tōshirō couldn't accept reality. He knew his own talent; his unconscious spiritual pressure affected those around him.
After years of training, he'd unlocked his potential.
Initially, he'd believed Kyōraku Callum, the previous generation's prodigy, was at most his equal in talent.
But as Kyōraku Callum's achievements mounted—joining the Fourth Division, winning the promotion battles, becoming Vice-Captain, and returning from Hueco Mundo with the Eleventh Division's former Vice-Captain, Ashido Kanō, minimizing casualties—Hitsugaya Tōshirō had held onto a sliver of hope: that with enough training, he could catch up.
But after Kyōraku Callum's battle with Kenpachi Zaraki, Hitsugaya Tōshirō fell silent.
He began to doubt his assumptions.
Perhaps there truly were those beyond compare.
Shinigami differed greatly in their abilities.
"Well…" Kyōraku Callum rubbed his nose, a hint of apology in his expression. He'd perhaps been a bit harsh, damaging Hitsugaya Tōshirō's confidence.
"Actually, you're very strong. That's why I recommended you to Yamamoto-taichō."
Hitsugaya Tōshirō's expression shifted, lost in thought.
"My power… wasn't fully unleashed." A chill gathered around him; the spiritual particle density in the air seemed to change under his spiritual pressure. Kyōraku Callum's eyes narrowed, recognizing what Hitsugaya was attempting.
Snap! "I advise against releasing your Shikai."
Hitsugaya Tōshirō was stunned, his spiritual pressure freezing at its current level.
He stared at the two fingers on his forehead, completely unaware of Kyōraku Callum's Shunpo movements while focused on him.
"Forgive me, foolish little Tōshirō," Kyōraku Callum thought with amusement, his expression unchanging, like still water.
"This is the last time."
Aware of the intense spiritual pressure on his forehead, Hitsugaya Tōshirō swallowed nervously.
"Vice-Captain Kyōraku, I think we can discuss the outcome of this battle." He didn't understand what had just happened, but for his own safety, he decided to concede.
Kyōraku Callum released his grip. "You should have said so earlier! I'm surprised you've already mastered your Shikai.
Not bad!" Kyōraku Callum ruffled his white hair, ignoring Hitsugaya Tōshirō's changing expression.
"I… I haven't fully mastered it yet," Hitsugaya Tōshirō said, a hint of annoyance in his voice.
"Could you please remove your hand from my head?"
Kyōraku Callum patted his head. "Relax. Don't worry about it. I've given you the Captain's position."
Veins throbbed on Hitsugaya Tōshirō's forehead. "You just didn't want it yourself!"
Kyōraku Callum waved his hand. "Don't worry about the details. You've passed my test. Apply for the Captaincy to Yamamoto-taichō."
Hitsugaya Tōshirō's expression returned to its usual impassivity.
"Understood."
After their conversation, Kyōraku Callum left, leaving Hitsugaya Tōshirō to ponder. Watching Kyōraku Callum's departing back, his eyes flickered.
"He must know something," Hitsugaya Tōshirō murmured, a low voice only he could hear. He sensed something in Kyōraku Callum's demeanor.
He felt gratitude towards his former Captain, Shiba Isshin, who had mentored and guided him since joining the Tenth Division.
He was deeply concerned about his disappearance, initially believing Shiba Isshin had died in battle.
But Kyōraku Callum's arrival and actions conveyed a message:
"Captain Shiba is definitely not dead!"
Hitsugaya Tōshirō's eyes shone with conviction. He felt a surge of gratitude towards Kyōraku Callum.
"Despite his unpleasant personality, his intentions are good."
After cleaning up Ryūfuku Mountain, Hitsugaya Tōshirō returned to the Tenth Division.
He noticed the other Shinigami looking at him strangely along the way, making him even more uncomfortable. He hurried back to the barracks.
"Third Seat Hitsugaya!" The guards greeted him, but their faces flushed crimson a moment later.
Hitsugaya Tōshirō gave them an impassive glance, mirroring the expressions of the other Shinigami he'd encountered on his way back.
