Chapter 66 - Reaching the Key

With Doctor Foster's memories, Cate understood more of the current world. She understood the current level of human development and how far they had deviated from the course intended by the gods. With these memories that went back over two hundred years, Cate was no longer confused by the things she was seeing around her. She understood the computers on the tables and the many pieces of scientific equipment. She had taken not only the doctor's memories but also his experience as well. Cate allowed herself to fall deeper into the base without trying to stop on any of the floors thereafter. As she fell, she picked up on fights going on all over the place. She saw Jordan, Albrecht, Mary, John, and Tala. They were all engaged in battles of their own. They fought against Chimera Knights and normal soldiers all over the facility. Cate did not stop to help any of them. Now that she knew what lay in this base, that was her focus and nothing else.

The Key of Destiny in this place was on the deepest floor, guarded by the best security that humans could muster. With a heavy boom, Cate landed on the last floor, making the entire structure shake from the impact. She was in a wide hall that seemed to go on forever. There were countless doors on both sides of the hall. With Doctor Foster's memories, Cate knew the kinds of valuable research behind each of these doors. If the knowledge behind these doors were to spread to the world, human society would develop by over fifty years in a single night. This information was valuable, but Cate wanted a single thing, and that was the key. She walked down the hall without stopping for anything.

As she moved, she used spells to counteract attacks from the security system in this place. When lasers shot out of the walls, Cate already had a barrier around her body. The barrier reflected these lasers into the wall, causing explosions that destroyed the entire system. When the hall was flooded by seawater, Cate had already cast a spell that allowed her to breathe in water. Poisonous gas, spikes that came out of the floors, and many more defenses that were in place could not stop her.

Cate finally reached the end of the hall. There was a large red door that was made from the most powerful alloy known to the Chimera Project. They had created this metal alloy themselves. It was a truly magnificent metal, but it was nowhere near the power held by magical metals such as Ibale. To pass through this door, one had to have their heartbeat, fingerprints, and eyes scanned by the machine next to the door. Cate already knew all this. No human could possibly pass through this door without authorization. Cate agreed that the Chimera Project had the best security system, but this was only among the humans. This door could stop all humans and a few of the weaker supernaturals, but that was all.

Cate was not that weak. She smiled brightly as she formed a fist. Ever since she used the Original Sin spell on herself, she had evolved into something more than a simple sorcerer. Her physical strength alone was enough to put many supernatural creatures to shame. Usually, she kept her full physical strength hidden from her team and the rest of the Avalon Society, and so she rarely got to use it. Right now, she was all alone. Cate punched the door without straining herself. There was no sound, and, for an instant in time, it appeared as though all light was being sucked into her hand. Nothing happened for a second, and then the door was sent flying away at an incredible speed. An explosive sound filled the place as the entire facility trembled as if it had reached the end of its life.

Everyone in the base felt this power move through the world. Mary had just finished killing the Chimera Knight she had been fighting when she felt this power. She furrowed her brows deeply, and her eyes shone with a mysterious light. Albrecht used this chance to dispatch his opponent before he began wondering about who had released so much power. Everyone was confused by what was going on. The only person who was sure that it was Cate who was responsible was the Mage Born. Cate had sparred with the Mage Born over the years, and the two had gotten a better understanding of each other's power. The Mage Born was not privy to all of Cate's secrets, or any of them if we are to be honest, but he was the person closest to understanding her best.

Cate was shaken by the power she had just released. She looked at her flawless, delicate hand, and she could not comprehend how so much power had been released through this hand. She had known that she was powerful, but this was far too much. Her heart was beating with excitement and fear over what she was becoming. At this moment, Cate sensed that someone was coming towards her. It was Mary.

Cate rushed into the room. It was white from the ceiling to the floor without any speck of dust or color. In the center of the room was a golden key encased in a glass structure. Cate understood that this glass was the most powerful the Chimera Project had. The system had also been set up in such a way that if one touched the glass without going through the proper procedure, they would be electrocuted with enough power to fry ten fully grown elephants. Cate wanted the key more than anything in this moment. She could not allow anyone else to see what the humans had been hiding.

She did not have the time to go through the proper methods to take the key, and yet she had to. The Twelve Keys of Chaos were no ordinary objects. They could not just be carried away as one pleased. The humans had found this Key of Destiny in this place, and they failed to take it away. It still floated in the exact same position where it was discovered. The humans built the base and this glass structure to protect the key in this place since they could not move it. To move one of the Twelve Keys of Chaos, one needed to channel their magic into the key. This was a kind of sacrifice to the key. Cate immediately grabbed towards the glass structure without caring for the protections in place. She had about ten minutes to take away this precious treasure before Mary reached the room.
