Chapter 68 - Divine Shard

In a matter of days, the entire case was wiped out. Cate ordered that they take away every piece of paper and computer. Nothing of the research was left behind. Before leaving, the base was set on fire. Cate used sunfire to make sure that everything would be reduced to ash.

Back at the Avalon outpost, they cleaned up everything as well and reduced everything to ash as well. Avalon had decided to shut down this outpost since its security had been compromised. It was still not known how the humans had come to learn of the location of this outpost, and so it was best to just close the place.

Within a few days, Cate and her people were already back in the Immortal realm. Avalon, the city, was still as majestic as ever, with the many incredible beasts flying above and powerful supernaturals going about their business in the city below. On this day, Cate, Jordan, Mary, the Mageborn, and Albrecht met with the director for their debriefing.

Thabo listened to Cate's reports, and when she was done explaining everything that had gone down, Cate reached into her storage ring and brought out the silver sword. She handed it over to Thabo with both hands. The sword glowed with powerful magic that made the air around it shimmer as though it were boiling.

After binding the key of destiny, Cate had taken this sword out of her storage ring and claimed that this was the treasure that had been hidden in the base by the humans. In truth, Cate had taken this sword from a mission the team had been deployed to a few months back. During that mission, Cate had run into this magic sword. She felt the powerful magic that flowed within the sword. On top of having such tremendous power, the sword had also been blessed by one of the gods, making it a Divine Shard.

A treasure powerful enough to slay most supernaturals. Even those with powerful healing abilities and immortality, like the vampires, would be seriously injured by a Divine Shard. Cate had tested this sword on herself. Even with her powerful healing ability, the sword left a large cut on her hand. Cate needed an entire week before the cut closed and another month for the scar to disappear.

Since Cate's healing ability allowed her to recover from even losing a limb in less than a few seconds, the fact that she needed all this time for a cut showed how powerful the sword was. Cate was not willing to give up this sword, but she had to give an explanation to the society. She had been in a situation where she could not simply tell Mary that there had been nothing in the most secure room in the base. In the end, Cate decided to part with the sword and take the more valuable key of destiny.

Thabo accepted the sword. From the way his eyes glowed with excitement, Cate believed that she would not have too much trouble with this situation. Cate had debated long and hard about what information to give to Avalon, and in the end, she decided to tell them about the Chimera Project. She hoped that the society would quickly wipe out the Chimera Project and all the humans involved in this mess. In this way, the humans would not gain too much power that could lead to a war between the supernaturals and the humans.

Cate was conflicted by her decision, but it was the only way she saw to avoid war with the humans. "I have decided to add a few members to your team." Thabo suddenly said. Cate was surprised by this. Usually, teams only had five members. Cate's team already had five members, and there was no room for more people.

Cate looked at her teammates and realized that they were also caught off guard with this new information. "I have finally created a balance in this team, and he now wants to add more problems for me to deal with." Cate thought as she glared at Thabo. The director cleared his throat at this. Over the past few years, Thabo had begun feeling that at any moment, he could be killed by Cate.

This was quite shocking since Thabo was a Supreme Mage and Cate was still only a Master Sorcerer. Still, Thabo had learned of how Cate had killed a Jude during her examination. "The council has decided to increase the power and size of this team. This is so that this team can be used for even larger missions."

When Thabo talked about larger missions, even he felt some shame at this decision. Larger missions simply meant more danger. Cate snorted loudly at this. She had no desire to take on more danger for Avalon without getting more benefits. Cate had no loyalty for Avalon at all. She had come here to steal the Keys of Chaos that the Society already had, and that was all. Everything she did was to rise higher in the ranks of Avalon. In this way, she would get access to more information about where the keys were kept.

Thabo looked at the door, and two people entered the hall. It was Tala and John. These were the people Cate and her team had worked with on their recent mission. The two were very powerful, with Tala having been an outpost master, a rank higher than Cate's current rank of team leader.

"Am I being demoted?" Cate thought. After all, it appeared as though Tala, who had a higher rank, was about to be named team leader, replacing Cate. This thought crossed everyone's mind. Jordan was excited at the prospect of her bastard sister being knocked down a peg.

Cate looked at Tala as though she was measuring her up. Tala was a master mage, but she was clearly on the verge of breaking through to become a Supreme Mage. Before things could escalate in the wrong direction, Thabo stepped between the two women. "Cate will remain as the team leader. Tala and John will be members of the team."

When Cate heard this, she calmed down and nodded at the new members she now had to deal with. "I have only recently put Jordan and Albrecht in their place, and I now have more troublesome people to break in."
