Chapter 73 - A Calculated Confrontation

Fai had decided to complete his daily quest. His plan was simple and efficient: he was going to run through the labyrinth, and when he reached the halfway point of five kilometers, he would turn back and head to where the others were.

At least, that was the original plan. Unfortunately, fate had something different in store. Standing directly in front of him were four individuals, all of relatively the same height.

They had already started to move toward him, and their intentions were nothing close to being good.

Of course, Fai knew that their intentions were bad; he didn't need a system for that kind of information. It was never meant to be a friendly environment.

In the end, this was still the second stage of the assessment, and everyone wanted to make it to the next stage.

So, it would also make sense to say that Fai, too, had no good intentions toward them when he met them.

In his case, he had more reasons to fight compared to them.

For his adversaries, they would only need five golden coins each to secure their place in the third stage of the assessment. But for Fai, it was different.

Of course, just like everyone else, he too needed to have five golden coins to secure his own place. But in addition to that, he needed even more than five.

The quest the system had given him earlier was still engraved in his memory: it demanded him to obtain as many golden coins as he could.

This specific requirement was what made Fai fundamentally different from them. They just needed five, while Fai needed more.

So, with all this in mind, Fai was mentally prepared for a confrontation the moment his eyes met with these teenagers.

He was going to fight against them and win... at least that was the plan—a plan fueled by confidence built up from his last battle victory and the absolute belief of not being a weakling anymore, something he felt proud of.

With a plan and objective in mind, Fai was sure; he was already mentally prepared. This preparation was crucial because in most battles, mental unpreparedness would likely lead to one's downfall.

It was a good thing Fai was prepared, but unfortunately, his mentally built-up momentum was distorted the moment he received that notification from the system.

The very moment Fai received a notification from the system, what he saw confused him.

[ DING ]

The quest notification rang in his mind as it spelled out its content onto Fai's vision, its robotic voice resonating within his mind.

Fai read through the message carefully and rapidly at the same time, making sure to properly understand its contents while not wasting too much time on it. A mix of urgency and caution ran through his veins.

But unfortunately, unlike the other quests that were straightforward, this one was not. It was a little bit confusing.

"Survive?"

Fai said out in his mind, but it almost felt like a question he was asking himself.

[ Ding ]

[ QUEST: SURVIVE!! ]

[ Objective: Try your best. Stand your ground for ONE minute. ]

[ Constraint: The Skill Auto Fairy Defence is unusable for the ONE minute you are to survive. ]

[ . COUNT DOWN STARTED ]

[ 59s ]

Fai stared at the system screen in front of him as he was slowly taking in the information that it displayed.

So far, Fai had realized one thing: the system was like some type of game. It would offer him quest upon quest, and all he had to do was complete them to gain EXP, which helped him to level up just like in games.

Up until now, he had understood every single quest the system had given him, but right now, the system was giving him a quest that he could not understand.

Survive!!

That word on its own was heavy, maybe too heavy for just a simple teenager like Fai.

Survive: to succeed in remaining alive in spite of hardship, danger, or difficulty.

To continue to live or exist after an event that could have caused death.

To somehow miraculously and gracefully bypass death, by the skin of the neck.

So, all in all, to survive meant to battle and play with death, and somehow manage to come out victorious... Was that even possible?

Why such a quest? Fai asked himself. If he was to reason it properly, maybe somehow, the system had already analyzed his opponents, so it was aware of their strength and their weakness.

Maybe that's how it was able to determine the type of quest to give him.

If it did work like that, it would make sense, and that's how it was able to even determine the difficulty of a quest. But still, why was the system giving him such a quest?

When he was to go against Keal's group, such a quest didn't even pop up. Meanwhile, Keal's group was made of four members and they all seemed more menacing than these four boys before him.

Maybe the system made a mistake, maybe it was bugging, right? If not, why was it giving out a quest like this? Fai had to know.

Then an idea popped up in his mind.
