The city was quieter at this hour. The kind of silence that felt uneasy, just minutes before midnight. The streets were emptying, doors locking, lights dimming as the last of the living hurried home. Everyone knew what came after dark. Not only did the scavengers and the criminals would run free, so would the cannibals. 

Not that the latter were easy to spot. They always knew how to blend in. The monsters that smiled among men, hidden in plain sight. I've hated them the most. 

A thin mist clung to the air, coiling through the streetlights as we stepped outside. Two black cars waited at the curb, their polished metal glinting beneath the haze. The guards stood beside them, their rifles strapped tight across their chests, their uniforms black. Masks covering their faces, as a precaution, just in case the first touch of dawn caught us unguarded.

Vampires, all of them.
