Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Glitch's Secret Message

Chapter 17: The Glitch's Secret Message

The echoes of Kara's frustration still lingered, a faint, metallic taste in my mouth, a ghost of her inadequacy humming beneath my own thoughts. The proverb. The seemingly insurmountable task of finding an obscure saying to appease the Queen of All Media, Cat Grant. It was a tiny ripple in the grand scheme of things, but through Cosmic Empathy, it felt amplified, urgent. It called for action.

"Alright, Kara," I thought, my gaze sweeping across my wall of monitors. "You need a win. And I, your resident mischievous guardian angel, am here to provide it. Not with laser eyes, but with carefully curated coincidences and the subtle art of information dissemination." My internal debate about how to respond to these emotional echoes had concluded. I couldn't just wallow in her sadness, nor could I ignore it. I had to act. But delicately. This wasn't about solving her problems for her, but about subtly guiding her to her own solutions, reinforcing her innate strengths.

The challenge was to make it seem like fate, not a multi-dimensional imp pulling strings. It had to be so subtle, so commonplace, that she'd attribute it to luck, or her own cleverness, or simply the universe finally taking pity on her.

I started with the internet. CatCo's internal servers were a mess, a chaotic tangle of information. But somewhere, buried deep, was the answer to Kara's proverb quest. My Minor Telekinesis (Level 6) was perfect for this. I wasn't hacking; I was merely… encouraging data.

I imagined Kara's search queries, the frustrated tapping of her keyboard. I gently, imperceptibly, tweaked the search algorithms on CatCo's internal archives. Not to bring the proverb to the top, but to subtly deprioritize irrelevant results, and to give a microscopic boost to articles or documents that might contain a clue, even if tangential. It was like subtly shifting the wind to help a sailboat catch a breeze.

Then, for good measure, I added a Sensory Illusion.

[SKILL: SENSORY ILLUSION (LVL 3). APPLICATION: OLFACTORY. FOCUS: PROVERB-RELATED SUGGESTION.]

I conjured a faint, almost subliminal scent of old parchment and very faint lavender – the kind of smell that might cling to an antique book. I aimed it at CatCo's common areas, particularly around Kara's desk. Not strong enough to be obvious, just enough to be a subconscious trigger, to make her think "old books," "ancient wisdom."

The plan unfolded over the next few hours. Kara, frustrated, paced her cubicle. I could feel the low thrum of her exasperation through the empathic link. She returned to her search, sighing.

Then, a minor glitch. Cat Grant, in a rare fit of "efficiency" (or perhaps just boredom), decided to have her assistant clear out a dusty old storage closet. Cat, always dramatic, made an announcement that echoed through the office, a fleeting echo of annoyance reaching me through the empathic link. "Kiera! This closet is a monument to inefficiency! Clear it out! And if you find anything remotely interesting, bring it to me. And by interesting, I mean something that could make us another million dollars, not a sentimental paperweight!"

"Oh, Cat," I thought, a mischievous grin spreading across my face. "You're about to be a beautiful, unwitting accomplice to my benevolent meddling."

As Kara reluctantly began clearing the closet, a faint scent of old parchment drifted past her nose. She paused, wrinkling it slightly, then dismissed it. But her eyes, almost subconsciously, drifted to a dusty old box tucked away in a corner. It was filled with discarded books and old files.

I gave a subtle, telekinetic nudge. A particularly heavy, leather-bound book titled "Forgotten Sayings of the Eastern Isles" slid slightly forward, nudging a smaller, unassuming pamphlet. Kara's gaze lingered on it. She picked up the pamphlet, flipping through it. Her eyes widened. The frustration radiating from her shifted, replaced by a surge of surprise, then pure, unadulterated relief.

"Gotcha," I thought, a wave of satisfaction washing over me, mingling with the last vestiges of her relief through the empathy. The proverb. It was there.

Later, I saw a news clip of Cat Grant, beaming, holding up a copy of her latest editorial. "Thanks to the diligent research of my brilliant assistant, Kiera, we have unearthed a proverb of astonishing historical significance that perfectly encapsulates my current journalistic brilliance!" Cat declared, completely oblivious to the cosmic puppetry that had led to her discovery. "It truly speaks to the unexpected wisdom found in forgotten corners!"

"Forgotten corners, indeed," I chuckled, raising my coffee cup in a silent toast. "You have no idea, Cat. You have absolutely no idea."

Kara, in the background of the same clip, looked tired but radiant. There was a subtle shift in her expression, a new light in her eyes. It was a deeper curiosity, a dawning realization that these "coincidences" weren't just luck. She was beginning to feel understood. And that feeling, radiating through the Cosmic Empathy, was a far more potent reward than any XP. It validated my role, giving a deeper meaning to the Burden of Power.
