Chapter 42 - ⁴²: betrayed

"No, I did not! I did not drug anyone!" Elara screamed, her voice breaking under the weight of frustration. She was fed up with the accusations that seemed to chase her like shadows, as if fate itself delighted in binding her to blame she never deserved.

"You say you were the one who saved me that night... that means you are the king!" Elara muttered, the pieces falling into place inside her mind with a cold, reluctant clarity.

Her breath quickened as she looked at him, disbelief and fury clashing within her.

She straightened, forcing strength into her trembling legs, and locked eyes with Zevryn. Her finger shot out at him, trembling but fierce. "I did not drug you! You were the one who bought me! You are the one who took my freedom from me!" she accused, her words sharp as blades, fueled by a rage that clawed at her chest.
