Lucas POV

I leaned against the balcony railing of the pack house scrolling mindlessly through my phone while the evening breeze cooled my skin. Behind me, I could hear the soft rustling of pages as Vanessa flipped through one of her fashion magazines. She was curled up in the easy chair near the window, her legs tucked beneath her, completely absorbed in whatever overpriced clothes and accessories the magazine was trying to sell.

It was peaceful. Almost boring. But after the chaos of the past few months, boring was exactly what I needed.

My phone pinged with a new message, and I glanced down at the screen. Kevin. Again.

I hissed through my teeth in annoyance and swiped the notification away without reading it. That boy didn't know when to quit. I'd told him no at least a dozen times. I'd begged him to leave me alone. I'd made it crystal clear that I wanted nothing to do with whatever schemes he was cooking up.

But Kevin was like a dog with a bone. He just wouldn't let go.
