Chapter 55 - Let's play a game

"Fight it, Hope. It's just a spell. Don't let it take you," Asher says, gripping my shoulders like he's the only thread keeping me tethered to reality.

I shake my head, my ears ringing with that twisted, childlike song. "Get a grip, Asher. Your gifts don't work here. None of them do. You need to cover your own damn ears—this place doesn't care if you're a shifter or not... We're all prey in here, and we don't know who the fuck our predator is."

A low, almost amused chuckle interrupts. "To save you the trouble, I'll give you my name," the woman says, her voice smooth and cruel. "It's Seraphina, and trust me, I'm not always like this." She casts a pointed look at Jeremy. "But someone opens my eyes to the truth. To what I am missing."

Her body convulses again, moving with that same unnatural rhythm as the song echoing through the chapel. "You can't stop it," she hisses. "No one escapes the truth forever. I asked you once, and I'll ask again—what are you most afraid of?"
