I'd barely been lying there for two minutes, still processing the chaos of emotions swirling through my chest, when my bedroom door burst open again.
"Oh my God!" Ava squealed, practically bouncing on her toes as she rushed into the room. "You kissed!"
I grabbed the nearest pillow and lobbed it at her head. "Shut up!"
But Ava dodged easily, her grin so wide it looked like it might split her face in half. "I saw you two in there, all pressed up against the wall, and his hands were on your face, and—"
"AVA!" I groaned, covering my burning face with my hands.
She laughed, diving onto the bed beside me and wrapping her arms around me in a fierce hug. "I'm so happy for you! I mean, I know things are complicated right now, but Maeve, we were so worried when you disappeared. When your parents told me you'd been taken..."
Her voice cracked slightly, and I felt some of my embarrassment fade as I registered the real fear in her tone.
