The world tilted sideways. "What do you mean? The attack on Moonveil? Who attacked Moonveil?"
"Vampires," Ronan said grimly. "Hundreds of them. They hit the academy about an hour ago. It's... it's bad, Maeve. Really bad."
I felt all the blood drain from my face. "Are there survivors? What about the other students? The faculty?"
"We don't know yet. The reports are scattered, contradictory. But Maeve..." He paused, his jaw working like he was trying to force out words he didn't want to say. "Aldric is there. Leading them personally."
Ava was looking between us with growing alarm. "Who's Aldric?"
"The head vampire," I said absently, my mind racing. "The one who wants to use me and my mother as weapons."
"And now he's attacking your school?" Ava's voice pitched higher with panic. "Maeve, what does that mean? What's he trying to do?"
I looked at Ronan, seeing the grim understanding in his eyes. "He's trying to draw us out. Make us come to him."
