Burning rage consumed me as the portal closed, taking my daughter, no, taking whatever monster wore my daughter's face, along with Lucian. My shadows writhed around me, responding to my fury, but there was nothing left to fight. Only the devastation Deianira had left in her wake.
"The Howling Mountains," I snarled, my mind racing. "What did she mean by that?"
"Mom?" A small voice broke through my thoughts. Marcie Sinclair, tears streaming down her face, clinging to her older brother. "What... what was that thing? That wasn't Maeve. That couldn't have been Maeve. Mommy, what's going on?"
Alice Sinclair was on her knees beside the bodies of the police officers, sobbing uncontrollably. "My baby girl. What happened to my baby girl? What was she? What did she become?"
