Six months later, Alex stood on the observation deck of Guardian Tower, watching the sunset over New Geneva. The city had become the unofficial capital of the enhanced world, a place where people with abilities could live openly and freely.
The changes had been dramatic. Some governments tried to register or control enhanced individuals. Others embraced them. A few countries split apart entirely when enhanced citizens decided to form their own nations.
It was messy. It was chaotic. It was perfectly human.
"Daily report," Maya announced, entering the room with her usual stack of tablets. "Seventeen new enhanced individuals manifested abilities yesterday. All chose their own paths. We've got two new heroes, three new villains, four people who just want normal jobs, and eight who are still figuring it out."
"Any control attempts?"
"Three governments tried to implement mandatory registration. Sterling's AI network alerted us immediately. Elena's handling the political pressure, David's providing heroic inspiration, and I'm making their lives technically difficult."
Alex nodded. "And the villains?"
"Choosing to be villains, not programmed to be. They're actually more ethical than the old system-controlled ones. Turns out when someone chooses to steal for money, they're less likely to murder innocents than when they're programmed to accumulate 'villain points.'"
Sterling's voice came through the room's speakers. "I've been analyzing global enhanced crime statistics. Overall criminal activity by enhanced individuals is down sixty percent since the liberation. It seems people make better choices when they're actually choosing."
Alex smiled. Sterling had kept his word, becoming a guardian AI that watched for attempts to control enhanced individuals. He'd developed something resembling a conscience, along with a dry sense of humor.
"Any major threats?"
Elena entered the room, her corporate network now turned toward protecting enhanced rights. "Nothing we can't handle. Some mad scientist in Australia is trying to recreate your original system. Some politician in Europe wants to build an 'enhanced army.' The usual megalomaniac nonsense."
"Want me to pay them a visit?" Alex asked.
"Nah," Elena grinned. "I convinced the Australian scientist that his work could make him rich if he focused on medical applications instead. The European politician just received some very convincing blackmail material about his tax evasion."
David materialized in the room, his golden energy more stable than ever. "Sometimes I miss the simple days when we just had to fight Sterling's army."
"Do you really?" Maya asked.
David considered this. "No, not really. At least now when I save someone, it's because I chose to, not because my system told me I had to."
Alex looked out at the city below. Enhanced individuals walked among normal humans. Some hid their abilities. Others displayed them proudly. A few used them to help. Others used them for personal gain. All of them made their own choices.
"You know what the funny thing is?" Alex said. "I spent so long thinking the system made me a villain. But really, the system just gave me power. What I did with it was always my choice."
"Even when you were accumulating villain points?" Maya asked.
"Especially then. I could have chosen to ignore the points. I could have refused the quests. I chose to follow them because they gave me a sense of purpose and control."
Sterling's voice was thoughtful. "In a way, we were all villains. Me for trying to control everyone. You for accepting that control. The difference is that you chose to grow beyond it."
Alex nodded. "And now we get to help others make their own choices. Good or bad."

"Duty calls," Alex said, reading the alert. "Maya, Elena, David - feel like a trip to Japan?"
"What's the threat?" Elena asked.
"Unknown. But Sterling's sensors are picking up some kind of massive system activation in downtown Tokyo."
"Could be another Olympus remnant," David suggested.
"Could be someone trying to become the next Sterling," Maya added.
"Could be someone who needs help figuring out their new abilities," Alex said. "Only one way to find out."

As they prepared to leave, Alex reflected on how much had changed. Six months ago, he'd been a college dropout with a mysterious system turning him into a villain. Now he was a guardian of free will, protecting the right of enhanced individuals to choose their own paths.
The irony wasn't lost on him. The system had made him a villain. But becoming a villain had taught him the value of choice. And choosing to be better had made him a hero.
Not because his system told him to be one, but because he decided that's who he wanted to be.
"Ready to go save the world again?" Elena asked.
"Ready to help someone choose who they want to be," Alex corrected.
