Chapter 28 - CHAPTER 28: DON'T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT;

Scene: Pete's Apartment – Late Night

The TV was playing some romcom rerun.

Popcorn half-eaten. Blankets tossed aside.

Pete was dozing off, head in Mek's lap, peaceful and safe.

But Mek? He was staring at the ceiling.

His chest ached.

The texts kept replaying in his mind.

"You'll never be enough..."

"You're nothing but a burden..."

He slowly, quietly slid out from under Pete, tucking a pillow beneath his head.

He needed air. Space. Distance.

Scene: Balcony – Cold Wind

Mek gripped the railing.

Thoughts racing.

What if Pete's dad was right?

What if loving Pete only dragged him down?

> "Why are you out here alone?"

Pete's sleepy voice made Mek flinch.

> "Couldn't sleep," Mek mumbled.

Pete stepped beside him. "You've been off lately. Distant. Are you mad at me?"

Mek shook his head. "No. Just… tired."

Pete cupped his cheek. "Mek. Talk to me."

Mek swallowed.

> "Pete… maybe we rushed into this."

> "What?"

> "Maybe this... us... isn't right. For you. You deserve better."

Pete's heart dropped.

> "Where is this coming from?"

Mek looked away. "I just don't want to ruin your life."

Pete grabbed his wrist, firm but gentle.

> "Look at me, Mek. Please."

Mek finally turned—and Pete saw it.

The fear. The heartbreak. The guilt.

Pete stepped closer.

> "You're scared. But don't you dare say I deserve better. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me."

Mek broke. Tears spilled.

> "Then why does everyone keep trying to break us apart?! Why do they keep saying I'm not good enough?!"

Pete's jaw clenched.

> "Who? Who said that?"

Mek hesitated. Then:

> "I don't know. Just... voices. Messages. People."

Pete took his face in his hands.

> "Mek. I love you. If anyone makes you feel less than that—tell me. Please."

Mek nodded, but the shadows in his eyes stayed.

Later That Night – Mek's POV

Pete fell asleep curled around him again.

Mek whispered into the darkness:

> "I'm sorry I'm not strong enough…"

And silently promised himself—

> "If it ever comes down to it...

I'll be the one to let go."
