The Celestial Roulette
Chapter 09: Team
– Felix Dallon (Sugar Rush) –
Staring down at the smug-looking villain, I mentally sigh at the mess I've been immediately dragged into. Still, it sounds like this Coil is far more dangerous than he's portrayed himself as, and I do want to make a name for myself as a hero.
I was going to focus on one of the bigger gangs, but I think I just took out the Merchants for as long as the PRT can hold onto Skidmark.
100cp rewarded, 100cp total
[Resource Generator] - 100cp
Buying materials and resources costs too much time and manpower, especially if the materials or resources that you need are limited or rare. You gain a warehouse full of materials and resources, no matter how common or rare, that you need to build any technology that you want. The warehouse replenishes used materials every twenty-four hours after you take them out of it. Additionally, it records and replenishes any materials that you add to it.
I won't turn that down, given my plans to finally start Tinkering properly. I can't make everything I need with Crystal Mechanics, so having a near-bottomless supply of resources will help me avoid the early perils of Tinkering. Any mundane material can be found in my new storerooms under the castle, next to my laboratory. It's a magical lab, not a science one, but I can make do with what I've got.
"You just gained something new, didn't you?" Lisa asks, looking smug as I nod tiredly. "You did the same after beating Skidmark and then after you agreed to help me. You stop paying attention and zone out; it's really obvious. What did you get?"
"A bottomless warehouse of materials for Tinkering," I explain, watching her eyes widen. She's right; I do need to stop getting so distracted by my rolls.
"Wait, seriously?" Lisa asks, making me nod.
"I just gained an entire castle; a refilling warehouse isn't even surprising at this point. Anyway, focus. Do you have a plan, or are we just winging it and hoping we don't die?" I ask, taking off my mask. She's already told me she knows who I am, and I doubt I could convince her otherwise.
"I do, actually. Coil has spread his roots far, digging them into every group, with moles, plants and backdoors. That's why he's so dangerous; he has a lot of information and knows how to use it. We need to start dismantling his operations; I know where his base is, but we can't just charge in and get slaughtered by several dozen hardened mercenaries armed with tinkertech weapons," Lisa explains, causing me to nod in agreement. "So, I have a plan that will help you be a better hero and help us take down Coil."
I can see why he'd want my goods if he already has an army in hiding, being able to turn his mercs into temporary capes would be a large power multiplier. If she's right about his plants, he probably already has access to the results of my power testing. He's a threat to me, and if he finds out my identity, to my family too. Lisa is a conniving little bitch, I can already tell that, but she's not wrong.
"Hit me," I say simply, making her grin.
"You make your own hero team," Lisa explains, watching my eyebrow rise. "You already have your Thinker support, yours truly, and we can build up a team while using it to weaken Coil's position. I have some other plans in the oven, but that's the first one. I can't risk leaving here while Coil is still a threat, but I can help provide intel on your targets from here."
"I might be able to help with that," I say, making her pause before she gasps.
"You stole Snitch," Lisa realises, grinning.
"More than that," I explain, summoning the Gremlin. "This is a support drone called a Gremlin. I will dismantle and study Snitch later, then take the useful parts and use them to improve the Gremlin. You can be my eyes in the sky without dealing with Leet's unpredictable tech."
"You can reverse-engineer Tinkertech? You are bullshit," Lisa says with an excited grin; I can see the scheming behind her eyes.
"But two people don't make a team. Especially when one can't even come out on patrols," I point out, making her nod.
"I know, which is where my next suggestion comes in. We have an opportunity," Lisa explains, looking every bit as smug as ever. "The Merchants are fucked, to put it simply. Mush and Squealer can't hold the gang together, and while Mush isn't the type to become a hero, we have a chance to grab Squealer before the PRT or gangs get her first."
"Squealer, as in the lunatic who made those death machines?" I ask, getting a nod.
"Hear me out. She got grabbed by the Merchants when she tried salvaging in one of the junkyards on their turf. Skidmark drugged her to the gills and made her his Tinker, but now he's gone. You can deal with those addictions, and if we don't grab her, then I suspect the Empire will by the end of the week. Do you want her tech in the Empire's hands? Not to mention, they won't be kind. I can't tell you the details, Unwritten Rules and all that, but someone important to the Empire was at your little event, and they got hit by one of the cars. She's fucked if they get to her first; the only reason they wouldn't kill her is because she's also useful, and they don't have a Tinker," Lisa rambles, and I can't deny she's talking sense.
The Empire is already powerful; it would be bad for everyone but them if they got access to Tinkertech vehicles. Not to mention, they'd have better materials than the Merchants, and she'd be able to make bigger and more dangerous things.
That's not even bringing up the suffering she has coming her way.
"Won't Mush be in danger as well?" I ask.
"Not likely as much; he's kinda a nobody. I figure he'll ditch the city or get picked up by the PRT once Squealer is gone. The Empire wouldn't risk kidnapping him and forcing him to join or killing him because he's frankly pathetic. As long as he avoids them, they're likely to do the same," Lisa says with a shrug. "I wouldn't recommend trying to recruit him. He's a junkie who became a Merchant because Skidmark promised him money, drugs and women. Even if you got rid of his addictions, he likes being a Merchant. He was better before Skidmark got his hands on him, but not much better."
So without Skidmark or Squealer, the Merchants fall apart.
"And I take it that you know where Squealer is?" I ask, making her nod with a smug smile.
"Aren't I useful?" Lisa asks. "After Squealer, my next piece of advice? Take out the Undersiders. They're on Coil's payroll, and they're moderately powerful. Mostly, we ran distractions, getting the PRT's attention while Coil's mercs did the real job elsewhere, but that might change with me gone."
"Squealer first; we can talk about your former teammates afterwards," I say, agreeing with her plan. I don't trust her, but at the very least, we can work together until we've dealt with Coil. "I've got some work to do, and so do you. You want to be the girl in the chair? Fine. I need you to set up an account with Number Man in my name for the Rogue side of our team and a PHO account under Sugar Rush to start taking orders when we're ready to start selling. I'll give you a list of 'goods', I want you to work out what a good price for each is."
I'm extending an olive branch, giving her a chance to prove she is trustworthy by letting her handle those things. She knows it as well, smiling brightly.
"On it, Boss!" Lisa says, smiling dazzlingly. "Wait, how do you have internet here?"
"Oh, I have no idea. Power fuckery," I shrug, making her snort.
"I don't suppose you can run by my place and grab my laptop and some clothes?" Lisa asks.
"Should I expect an army of mercenaries?" I ask, getting a shake of her head.
"No, Coil knows I wouldn't show up back at the apartment he owns; with your Stranger Bus, you should be able to get in and out without anyone noticing until it's too late," Lisa promises, getting me to sigh.
If I die for her wardrobe, I'm coming back to haunt her. That, or my Carnifex can explain why sending me to my death for a laptop was a bad idea.
– Later –
My laboratory actually came with a good selection of tools. I expected it to be more occult, but it seems set up for both. The castle was definitely a good purchase, and my storehouse gives me plenty to work with.
Leet genuinely makes good tech. It's a shame that everything he makes is so volatile (and that he wastes his talents on stupid streams and immature crimes). The camera isn't that important, beyond being tiny for how high-definition it is, but the true benefit is the relay.
Leet's stream never loses connection, no matter where they are. Its comms system is far better than the Gremlin's, which is rather advanced as it is. With all the parts from my storeroom, building that system into the much larger Gremlin isn't difficult. It's actually rather satisfying to finally do some real Tinkering, watching my hands move with surgical precision as I upgrade the Gremlin.
I need to make a controller for it as well so Lisa can control it from our base without dealing with shitty connections or clunky controls. Honestly, that takes longer than upgrading the drones, but the energy eclairs exist for a reason.
I have to lie and tell my family I'm staying at a friend's house, and I know this won't last forever. Once Winter Break is over, I can move back into my dorm and have more freedom to stay out all night, but we work with what we have.
'You were amazing today; three villains down in two outings might be a new record.'
Vicky's message is too innocent, putting me on edge. I send a quick reply, thanking her for the praise, and it's not long before I get a second reply.
'Of course, the best part was getting to taste your cream again…'
There it is.
Attached is a picture of her, and my eyes widen as I see her lying down on a familiar bed. My bed, topless in just a pair of booty-shorts, not doing anything to cover her breasts.
'Glad to know you enjoy my product; I'll be happy to leave you with a belly full of cream any time you want, Miss Dallon. I always make sure the customer comes first and leaves satisfied.'
She sends another picture, one hand down her shorts and a look of pleasure on her face.
'Oh? I'm just a broke high school student, so I don't think I can afford your services… but maybe we can come to an agreement? I don't mind working hard to pay off my debts, and I'm good with my hands… and even better with my mouth.'
Damn it, Vicky, back down already, you stubborn bitch.
'Asking me to be your Sugar Daddy? I can't say I'm not interested. Like I said, your cake might be even nicer than mine. I'd be down for a trade.'
I'm not gonna stop until she stops. My moment with Amy has only made me more comfortable playing this little game, so I'll win.
'Oh, you like my cake, do you daddy? You can come and take a bite whenever you want x'
Attached is, predictably, a picture of her cake, shorts now fully down, exposing the naked body beneath. She's sticking her ass out towards the camera, and this time I can see everything, the tight-looking slit between her legs and a hint of her asshole. She's wet, her lower lips glistening for the camera.
She's masturbating, to our texts, in my fucking bed. What does it take to get this stubborn woman to give up and admit she knows it's me?
'I doubt Brandish would approve of that, as tempting as it is.'
'Aww is someone scared of the lawyer mom lol x'
Before I can respond, she hits me with a second text.
'I could sneak out… you can come by in your bus and take me for another wild ride; then I can take you for a wilder one'
She just doesn't give up.
'Tempting, it really is, but I'm pre-booked for tonight. Cape biz. Don't you have a boyfriend anyway? Panacea mentioned him.'
She doesn't respond for a few minutes after that, and for a moment, I think I've finally gotten through to her.
'Want some backup? I'll watch your back; you can watch my ass. Don't worry about him; we're on a break again lol'
No, they aren't; I know this because I heard her talking about him this morning. But I can't say that, can I?
'Appreciate the offer, but too many people would make my target jumpy. Hoping to avoid a fight. Just know I'll be thinking about you and your cake every second of it'
Another picture of her 'cake' and a surprisingly innocent message to be careful later, I nod to myself. She seems done for the night.
Which means it's time for me to get to work.
– Lisa Wilbourne (Tattletale) –
Piloting her drone from the safety of the castle, she smiled as she surveyed the Merchant workshop. Finding Squealer was not difficult, as the Merchants were far from subtle about their operations.
The Gremlin drone was good, able to scan for hostiles, protect allies, heal minor wounds and it even had a fun little taser that she'd already used to incapacitate what passed for a lookout with the Merchants.
She could see why Regent enjoyed tasing people; it was very amusing. With her providing overwatch, Sugar was able to easily sneak through the night (having swapped his costume for a black version so he didn't stand out so much).
Ooh, Overwatch could be a good new name? Tattletale didn't fit a hero, and she wasn't that attached to it. Maybe Insight? Eh, she'd think about it later. She probably needed a new costume for when she had to be seen.
She was going to suggest that they fully recruit Parian later; that girl was more powerful than she showed with her little acts and teddy bears. The star prize would be Panacea herself, but that was unlikely to happen unless something went very wrong with New Wave; Felix didn't want her to leave New Wave and join his side.
She wasn't certain how Panacea herself felt about it, however.
Still, Felix was very powerful. His power was straight up nonsense, but it was nonsense that was on her side now. She'd need it to deal with Coil, after which she could take Coil's wealth and contacts and fade into the night. Felix would have a big villain takedown on record; she'd be filthy rich and able to make another new identity far away from here.
Well, unless it was more beneficial to stick with Felix and his particular brand of bullshit. She wanted to work out how he'd empowered himself and Panacea, and it might be better to stick around as his star rose.
She just needed to work out if his power had a limit, because if it didn't, then she would have an in with the next Eidolon.
– Sherrel Bailey (Squealer) –
Cunt-fucking-bastard.
Skiddy, the cock-munching, ass-licking cuck that he was, had taken her baby when it wasn't even ready. She hadn't even gotten the turret ready, and the dumb bastard had taken it to fight some fucking nobody who could make cake.
Not to mention emptying her garage of armoured cars in some hare-brained scheme that had pulled the attention of the entire fucking city on their asses. She hoped he was getting his ass torn up by some fat black guy named Bubba in the slammer because he'd fucked up and fucked them even harder.
The PRT was hitting them, the Empire and ABB were pushing into their turf, and she couldn't do a fucking thing about it. The Empire was looking for her as well, and that sent a shiver of fright through her drugged-up body.
Yeah, she was white, but she was white trash. She didn't quite fit their picture of the master race and wasn't looking forward to whatever they had planned for her after Skids had somehow pissed them off. She needed to get gone, but the Empire and PRT would be watching for runners, and if any of the guys who knew where her garage was got grabbed, they'd squeal like whores.
"Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!" Sherrel shouted, kicking her bench. She groaned in pain as she cursed herself. Fucking Skids, fucking Mush (who'd taken one look at the Empire capes prowling their turf and ran for the fucking hills), fucking her, who'd been dumb enough to get grabbed.
"Problems?" a soft voice asked, and she grabbed her wrench and spun around, eyes widening as the fucking Sugar Shit who took down Skiddy stepped from the shadows, wearing an all-black version of his flashy outfit.
"Yeah, some Sugary Shitstain is in my garage, and I'm not going back to jail," Sherrel growled, looking around for a way to take him down.
"I'm sorry about this, but I think you'll thank me for it later," Sugar said, and before she could speak, she felt her body seize up as something zapped her from behind. She'd been tased before, but this felt like it was turned up to eleven as her body convulsed, and she fell to the floor.
Sugar moved quickly, catching her before she could slam against the concrete ground, looking down at her from behind that ridiculous mask. She just hoped she'd be put in the same prison as Skidmark so she could kick his ass herself.
– Later –
Waking up, she gasped as she looked around the fancy fucking room she'd been placed in. It was the nicest slammer she'd ever seen, and she'd seen a few in her days.
Her body felt good, too fucking good, sitting up with wide eyes. She held out her hand, staring in shock. The jitters were gone, and she hadn't taken a hit today. She couldn't feel any of the usual shittiness that came with not having her daily hit.
She blinked, realising that a certain itch wasn't present either. The fuck was going on?
Getting up from the fucking princess bed, she stepped out of the room carefully and let out a shout as she spotted a floating drone right outside.
"Ah, you're awake?" Sugar said, getting her attention. He was dressed casually, though he still had his mask on. "Follow me, we need to talk."
Knowing she'd been captured and not wanting to try and fight him without any of her tech, she followed behind as they moved through the extravagant building until they came to a fancy-ass room with some comfy seats that probably cost more than the Merchants made in a month.
"Take a seat. Would you like a drink?" Sugar asked, and she almost told him to shove his drink up his ass before she realised how parched she was.
"Yeah," Sherrel said simply. He quickly got her a glass of ice-cold water, which she downed. Damn, was water supposed to taste that good? "So, what the fuck do you want? Why aren't I in a PRT cell?"
She didn't trust him at all, and was wondering if this was the prelude to her getting bent over. She didn't know where they were and couldn't fight him off without any of her cars, making her nervous. It wouldn't be the first time she'd gotten raped; she was more worried that he was gonna decide to get rid of the evidence and witnesses afterwards.
He was obviously some rich prick, so he was probably just playing hero for fun. Everyone knew the rich fucks were the most depraved.
"Because I think you have potential that shouldn't be wasted in jail," Sugar explained, making her blink. "I'm building my own hero team, and you were brought to my attention as a potential member."
"I don't know if you've noticed, but I'm a fucking villain," Sherrel pointed out, making him chuckle.
"You are, but let's be honest. The Archer's Bridge Merchants are finished. Skidmark is in jail, and your 'turf' is being torn apart and divided between the ABB and the Empire. The Empire are hunting for you, seeking revenge for Skidmark hurting one of their high-ranking members with his little ploy. The Merchants are done, but there's no reason that should mean that you go down with them," Sugar explained simply. "As you've no doubt noticed, I fed you a Cleansing Croissant to deal with your… addictions and diseases. Squealer is done, whether you accept my offer and rebrand, or I hand you over to the PRT as the next capture to help my new team get started."
The PRT would blame her for Skidmark's fuck-up, and his words seemed genuine. At the very least, jail was her worst case.
"You really want your team to be stuck with an ex-merchant?" Sherrel asked, still suspicious. "Nah, you're up to something. You don't want some junkie villain making scrap cars fucking your rep up; I ain't dumb. Look, if you want to get between my legs, then get on with it; I ain't gonna fight back. I won't tell anyone either, you get your fun, and you can either drop me off with the cops or just drop me outside the city, and I'll get out of this shithole."
Sugar went silent, making her think she'd hit the nail on the head.
"No, that's not what I want at all. I understand that your reputation isn't that good, but that's something we can work on after we've rebranded you and separated you from Skidmark. It's fairly common knowledge that you were grabbed by Skidmark early," Sugar explained, making her flinch back at the bad memories of her early days. "I think you have genuine talent; I'm a Tinker too, and despite how… misused it was, your cars are very good for something made with utter scrap. The PRT is interested in my goods, so I can use that to clear your name and push the blame onto Skidmark, and I have access to a lot of resources. I want to see what you can do with actual materials, without the drugs and Skidmark dragging you down. This isn't a trick or some cruel joke before I send you away to spend the next few years of your life locked away."
As he said this, he reached up and removed his mask, revealing the handsome, and probably barely legal, blond-haired, blue-eyed man beneath it.
"My name is Felix Dallon, yes, those Dallons. I didn't want to join New Wave and expose my identity. I genuinely want you on my team, Sherrel," Felix said; her identity was barely a secret, so she wasn't surprised he knew it, but exposing himself as Glory Girl's brother genuinely shocked her to her core.
"Wait, the Dallons live in a fucking castle?" Sherrel asked, making him chuckle. It was a nice laugh, exposing his perfect shiny-white teeth. How much did heroism pay?
"No, my power supplied me with a pocket dimension. The castle, too," Felix admitted. What the fuck was his power? She thought he just made weird cakes? "Follow me, please."
Following him, she felt her eyes widen as they entered a storeroom. It was massive, with rows of racks absolutely filled to the brim with good quality materials of every kind.
"I want to see what you can truly do, and despite your past I do want you on my team. If you are still uninterested in trying the other side of cape life, I think I have one last ace up my sleeve to convince you. How about it? Wanna go for a ride?" Felix asked, making her blink. "One ride in my vehicle, and if you still aren't interested, I'll drop you off at any city in America. My only rule is that you must never return to the Bay if you decline."
"You think I'd come back here on purpose?" Sherrel asked, making him laugh. She was from Brooklyn, and got caught up in the stories about Brockton Bay being the cape capital, figured a single tinker would slip under the radar. What a fucking mistake that was. "Fine, let's see this ride, Sugar Boy."
Felix simply smiled, gesturing for her to follow him.
– Later –
Sitting on the floor of the bus, she gasped and held onto the railing for support as Felix stared down at her with a slight smile. Her heart was beating a mile a minute, her mind racing with confusion and possibilities.
"Well? What do you think?" Felix asked, his tone smug, and for good fucking reason.
"Fuck me," Sherrel gasped, making him laugh.
"I already said that wasn't why I grabbed you," he teased, making her roll her eyes as she rose on shaky legs. Taking several deep breaths to steady herself, she looked around the impossible bus. It had shrunk mid-drive, becoming so thin she shouldn't have been able to fit on it so it could go between two vans. Nobody drove it, but she could see the wheel moving and the pedals being pushed.
"Why the fuck do you want me when you made this?" Sherrel asked.
"I didn't. My power gave it to me, prebuilt, I just thought you'd find it interesting. What do you say, want to join up and see what we can do together?" Felix asked, clearly already knowing her answer as she snorted.
"Sure thing, Sugar Daddy," Sherrel said. "Whatever you want, just let me study this fucking masterpiece."
"Sugar Daddy?" Felix asked.
"You're providing me materials and protection for my services, ain't you? It fits," Sherrel teased, her heart pounding as she looked at every inch of the logic-defying bus. Tinkertech was normally illogical, but this whipped out its giant purple dick and slapped Logic in the face before fucking Physics in the ass while Logic watched from the cuck chair.
"Welcome to the team, Sherrel. We're happy to have you," Felix said softly, giving her shoulder a squeeze. Despite her vast experience, she felt her heart skip a beat at his gentle smile, reaching up and touching his hand. A second chance, those didn't come around easily.
"You can have me whenever you want, Daddy," Sherrel teased, falling back on flirting because she didn't like how vulnerable that smile made her feel.
"You know, you're the second girl tonight to say that to me," Felix replied, making her raise an eyebrow with a grin.
"Oh, my new teammate? You building a cape harem? I'm down for that. Anyone I know?" Sherrel asked, getting a deep laugh from him.
"Nah, not Tattletale. You wouldn't believe me if I told you who the other one was," Felix joked as they drove through the portal back to the fucking castle she was going to be working from.
"Oh? Try me. Wait, lemme guess. Miss Militia? Nah, maybe that Stalker chick? She seems like she has daddy issues; Rune too. Fuck it, Alexandria? It still wouldn't be the most surprising thing I've seen tonight," Sherrel snorted, giving Felix a pat on the ass. "Looking forward to working under you, boss."
– Felix Dallon (Sugar Rush) –
I was fairly certain I won Sherrel over because of one simple thing.
Feat Achieved: Recruit Squealer (100cp granted, 100cp remaining)
That feat popped up the moment the Knight Bus started moving.
[Frost Atronach] 150cp
It passes by, unable to be purchased. I see the image of the giant of ice but shake my head. I don't lock it, letting it slip away as I reroll.
[Golden Fruit Trees] - 100cp, 0cp remaining
Mortals are so obsessed with eternal life, what with them only existing for a century if strife or illness does not catch up to them first. But, seeing as how your life is directly connected to them, perhaps it would be a good option to give them some assistance. You now possess an orchard of divine trees that weigh heavy with golden, divine fruit. In addition to extending their lives and youth by a thousand years for each fruit eaten, they possess a single effect, like being irresistible to mortals or granting them increased wisdom. Alternatively, you could just double down on the life extension, making them true fruits of immortality. These have no effect on divine beings other than just tasting delicious.
I mentally blue-screen as the orchard of apple trees of immortality purchase themselves for less than a single ice golem. Sometimes, I wonder about the prices; how does my system decide them?
Whatever the reason, I'm not going to complain as I sense my orchard appearing near my herb garden. The things I can do with these…
It's going to be divine.
'I call dibs on one; the Greeks never let me have any of theirs. Fucking Eris, the bitch.'
Eh, I guess I can spare one if you make it worth my while. This wasn't part of our deal.
'Are you refusing a Goddess? Demanding payment from ME?!'
Her voice booms through my head, but I stand strong and scoff. Damn right, I am. We had a deal; if you start breaking your side then I'm not doing mine.
'Smart man, I knew I liked you for a reason. Name your price, but I want one apple a year.'
— Quest Options —
What should the team do first?
[Focus on recruitment (suggestions very welcome)]
[Target the Undersiders, weaken Coil and get an early win]
[Go big or go home; try and take down one of the heavy hitters from BB]
[Focus on the rogue side of the team first]
What should Felix ask for payment for his apples?
[A Night with a Goddess (mandatory horny option)]
[Bastet's Divine Blessing (?)]
[A Divine Artefact (a powerful item from the Reliquary)]
[A Defender (a powerful cat-themed creature from the Menagerie)]
[Divine Intervention (Bastet will tip the odds heavily in his favour in one fight of Felix's choice]
Author's Note: The Celestial systems are borked as ever, I actually slashed the costs of the Menagerie because when you're doing Roulette, it is always worse to get the Menagerie since 300cp can make you super powerful in the Forge or Grimoire, but then you get to the Menagerie, and it gives you a single mediocre summon, or it gives you an army-killing beast for the same price. I'll just wing it and decide as I go.
Priapus' note: balancing the prices of all fictional things in a sensible way is very hard. Likely why they didn't bother.
[X] Target the Undersiders
[X] Bastet's Divine Blessing
Beans' note: Yeah I only went on a little bit of a rant about the pricing of two different kinds of immortality granting gold apples in the discord. Oh well. Golden Apple Crumble when?
[X] Target the Undersiders - You know Regent will be a hilarious ally for a comedy cape, and yknow, Coil can eat a dick
[X] Bastet's Divine Blessing - We do a little playing the long game.
Old man's note: Golden Apple Crumble Beans.
[X] Target the Undersiders
