Chapter 90 - World Tree

-----

Time flew by.

It had already been three days since Sam ventured into the depths of Viridian Forest.

The inner forest was no place for amateurs.

Wild Pokémon here were far more dangerous, stronger, faster, and unpredictable.

But that was exactly why Sam chose to stay.

He wasn't in any rush to leave.

The deeper he went, the more intense the training could be.

It was the perfect place to push his team beyond their limits.

Right now, he stood in a small clearing, dense foliage surrounding him like a living wall.

Above, filtered sunlight streamed through the thick canopy, casting dancing shadows on the moss-covered ground.

"Silver, Steel Wing!" Sam called out.

A sharp cry echoed through the trees.

"Lili~!"

Silver's broad wings shimmered with metallic light as he dove, the energy coating his feathers with a steely gleam.

The air crackled from the force of his descent.

His target, a fully evolved Pidgeot, flapped its wings rapidly in midair, trying to outmaneuver the incoming strike.

But it wasn't fast enough.

Boom!

The impact echoed like a cannon blast.

Silver slammed into the Pidgeot with crushing force, knocking the bird clean out of the air.

The poor creature spun, feathers flying, before it hit the ground hard with a thud.

"Bii-bii~!"

The Pidgeot groaned, eyes swirling in a daze.

It tried to stand, but its legs buckled, and it collapsed.

Fainted.

Hovering above the battlefield, Silver let out a victorious cry, wings spread wide.

"Lili~!!"

His voice rang with confidence.

Sam watched quietly, arms crossed.

His expression didn't change, but inside, he was pleased.

The transformation was undeniable.

He was no longer the timid kid that clung to his side, flinching at every sound.

After dozens of battles, he had grown into herself.

He moved with pride now, carried a quiet ferocity in her gaze.

Each fight forged him into something closer to what he was born to be: a legendary Pokémon.

Powerful, proud, and majestic.

Sam raised a hand.

"Silver, come back."

With a cheerful trill, Silver descended, his large body landing gently beside his trainer.

He lowered his long, slender neck and rubbed it affectionately against Sam.

Sam smiled faintly and stroked his head.

"Alright, alright. Let's head back. Luca's probably finished cooking by now."

Silver let out a pleased hum.

Sam climbed up onto Silver's back, settling between the base of her wings.

Without needing another word, Silver beat his wings once and took off.

The clearing vanished behind them as they soared through the thick green canopy.

Back at the camp, Sam warmed his hands with a tin cup of water.

The small fire crackled nearby, its heat comforting in the cool, misty morning air.

The camp itself was nothing fancy, just a modest setup nestled between thick roots and boulders, but it was efficient.

His team had claimed this patch of forest as their temporary base.

Silver sat nearby, nibbling on a handful of berries, chatting in soft trills with Lucario.

The aura Pokémon responded with calm nods and quiet sounds of his own.

Just off to the side, Darkrai rested alone, legs crossed, silently gnawing on a cube of concentrated energy.

He didn't speak much.

He never did.

But Sam could sense he was listening, always alert.

Sam leaned back against a tree and took another sip.

His gaze swept over his three Pokémon thoughtfully.

Silver.

Lucario.

Darkrai.

Each of them had grown tremendously in this short time.

Not just in level, but in presence.

But Sam also knew something else: they were nearing a plateau.

He tapped the rim of his cup with a finger.

"Silver… Lucario… Darkrai…" he murmured to himself.

"At this point, fighting ordinary wild Pokémon isn't giving us much anymore."

Even Silver, despite being younger and less experienced, was too strong for the average encounter out here.

The battles were still useful, sure.

But not challenging. Not like before.

They were ready for something more.

Sam's eyes drifted toward the tree line, beyond the fog that hung low in the forest.

His thoughts wandered.

There was still one place they hadn't gone.

One final area, untouched by most trainers, shrouded in mystery.

"The Tree of Life," he whispered.

"Guess we might as well take a look while we're here."

It wasn't just a legend.

The locals spoke of it like a myth, but Sam knew better.

In the deepest heart of Viridian Forest stood something ancient.

Something sacred.

Some called it the Tree of Life.

Others referred to it as the Heart of the Forest.

Either way, Sam was curious.

He stood, brushing off his coat.

Lucario and Darkrai returned to their Poké Balls without protest.

They understood without needing words.

Sam climbed back onto Silver's back.

"Let's go," he said softly.

Silver launched into the sky again, his wings stirring the forest floor into a swirl of leaves.

As they flew deeper, the air began to change.

The canopy grew denser, darker.

Sunlight barely reached the ground anymore.

A fog rolled in low, curling like fingers through the underbrush.

The cries of wild Pokémon grew faint, almost distant.

Sam glanced around as they passed over treetops that looked untouched by human hands.

Some of them were ancient, their trunks wide enough to hide a Snorlax.

They were close.

Even the wild Pokémon began to disappear.

No Pidgeotto circling overhead.

No Beedrill buzzing through the trees. Just stillness.

Silver began to slow down.

Her wings beat quieter, more cautiously.

A moment later, a soft voice touched Sam's mind, not a sound exactly, but a thought.

"We're close."

Sam nodded silently.

The wind shifted.

Ahead, the trees opened slightly, just enough to reveal a stretch of hills rising in the distance.

Atop those hills stood several massive mountains, covered in thick mist.

Nestled within them…

The Tree.

A colossal structure, neither entirely plant nor stone, loomed through the fog like a sleeping giant.

Its twisted roots wound through the earth like veins.

Its branches rose high above the forest, seemingly touching the clouds.

The bark pulsed faintly.

Sam's heart beat faster.

Not from fear, but anticipation.

The Tree of Life.

They had arrived.

"Sam, over the mountains, there's something ahead."

Silver's telepathic voice rang softly in his mind, but there was a weight to it, a kind of quiet awe.

"I can feel a huge tree… the life force coming from it is overwhelming."

Sam's expression sharpened.

"I sensed it too."

He gave the side of her neck a light pat, calm and reassuring.

"Take it easy. Let's go see it for ourselves."

Silver flapped her wings, ascending effortlessly as they cleared the ridgeline.

What lay beyond took Sam's breath away.

Rising in the distance, so massive that it seemed to touch the heavens, stood the Tree of Life.

Even though Sam had read about it before, nothing could've prepared him for the sight.

The trunk alone was easily a thousand meters tall, thick, and wide enough to cradle a dozen Wailord side by side.

Its surface was made of crystal-clear stone, layers upon layers of transparent rock formations that caught the sunlight and refracted it in every direction, creating ribbons of color that danced across the air.

The entire tree shimmered.

Not just with light, but with life.

Energy.

It radiated from the roots to the canopy like a living pulse, warm and powerful.

Even someone without Aura sensitivity would feel it, like standing near a sleeping giant.

Sam and Silver glided silently over the treetops until they found a ledge along a cliff that overlooked the tree.

He jumped down lightly, boots crunching against gravel.

This wasn't just a place of legend.

It was real.

And somehow… sacred.

Sam narrowed his eyes and reached for his belt.

Click.

Two flashes of red light lit up the clearing.

Lucario landed first, crouched low.

His aura sensors twitched as he scanned the surroundings instinctively.

"Luka~!"

Darkrai emerged next, silent as shadow.

He hovered just above the ground, his body cloaked in wisps of darkness.

Typically, he drifted calmly behind Sam, like a quiet sentinel.

But this time…

He stopped.

Then growled.

A low, guttural warning.

"Hssss~!"

Sam turned immediately.

"Darkrai?"

Something wasn't right.

From the moment they arrived, Sam had kept his senses open, his Aura, Psychic perception.

But he had felt nothing unusual… until now.

He took a step closer.

"You sense something?"

Darkrai's tendrils writhed as he slowly rose higher into the air.

Wisps of shadow bled from his body, curling across the rocks like smoke.

Then,

Boom.

A pulse of Haze exploded outward from Darkrai, spreading like ripples in water.

The air ahead shimmered.

Space itself… twisted.

For a moment, everything bent strangely, like the world was folding in on itself, and then it snapped back.

And in the middle of the clearing, floating just inches off the ground, appeared a Pokémon.

Tiny.

Pink.

With big, curious, triangle-shaped blue eyes.

Its long tail curled lazily behind it, ending in an olive-like shape.

"Mew!" Sam breathed, eyes widening.

The creature hovered playfully, completely unbothered by the sudden attention.

It tilted its head, then flipped mid-air, doing a slow somersault, as if greeting them.

It had been cloaked in invisibility, but Darkrai's dark aura had forced it out.

"Mimi~ Mimi~"

The psychic-type let out a string of melodic chirps as it began to circle them.

It moved without sound, no wind or rush of air.

Just lightness.

Its eyes flicked from Lucario to Silver, then to Darkrai… and finally landed on Sam.

That's when it stopped moving, floating still, its gaze locked on him, studying.

The moment he saw it, the information flowed into his mind.
