Chapter 45 - Chapter 45

"What the hell?" Montoya mumbled as she leaned over the report she had received. It was about the warrants she asked for. They were denied because Ricardo Bell had managed to transfer all of his newly acquired properties to a company. The same company was co-owned by a few different names. But it all amounted to the same result.

The murder had nothing to do with the properties so there was no reason to search them. So the judge denied the warrant on the chance they could sue for the lack of proper reasoning. It was not like they were a well known gang hideout or something.

The report was pulled off her desk and she looked up to see her pale girlfriend who had silently arrived and leaned on her desk. She began looking over the report, "an issue with an investigation?"

Montoya leaned back in her chair. "Sort of, I am still trying to nail down the motive. We already have security footage but the guy clammed up before he was sent to Blackgate." Montoya explained as she slightly turned back and forth on the swivel chair but quickly stopped as it loudly creaked. The cheap thing like many other things needed to be replaced or repaired, but the GCPD was constantly underbudgeted.

"Blackgate?" Kate raised an eyebrow. "Why did you send a suspect to Blackgate?"

"Can't afford to keep them here. Not to mention we have prisoners from the gang war and those mercenaries. Gordon and Mayor decided it was better to send all criminal prime suspects who we have proof on to send them to the same place. Makes stations less of a target." Montoya shrugged, "Bullock has been thrilled with the idea. But this case has felt off from start to finish. Especially since he was a witness at that Red Hood Port slaughter that never came forward, not to mention he never stayed around to give a statement."

"If you had proof he was there you could force him to." Kate pointed out getting an eyeroll from Montoya.

"I know, unfortunately he was getting paid under the table and all security footage was destroyed. There is no proof aside from unreliable testimonies that he was even there." Montoya informed her girlfriend as she moved forward and looked at the time, realizing her girlfriend had come to pick her up for dinner, she nudged her leg as she pulled the report from her hand.

"Ow!" Kate flinched as her leg was hit. Montoya's eyes narrowed and Kate rolled her own eyes and nodded, "yeah I know my motorcycle is dangerous." She stood up clearly favoring one leg over the other.

"Come on, let's go out. We will take my car." Montoya insisted as they walked out of the squad room. Unknown to both of them a shadow moved through the room and went through the files on the case before disappearing again.

It had been only two days inside solitude containment and he was bored. Rico had nothing to do aside from work out and eat if he was a normal person. Which to be fair he had been doing both.

But he was also using his phone and interacting with his system. But on the third day he was doing pushups when the door began clicking and unlocking. He frowned in confusion because so far everything had been fine. Thanks to Edgelady he had gotten everything done without an issue.

So what reason would there be to open his cell door when he still had several days of being in solitary confinement. He stood up and tensed his body as he watched the door open. He frowned as no one was immediately visible.

Then a moment later a skinny man in a lab coat and with a clipboard walked in. "He-hello there! I am Doctor-"

"I am going to stop you right there." Rico interrupted him. "I know you are not a legitimate employee. Just like I know that I will break your limbs if you try to inject me with that syringe." The doctor had kept one of his hands behind him. The only thing that made sense was a syringe of some kind.

The doctor blinked and then brought up the syringe. He then put it in his hand with the clipboard and pulled his big circle glasses off his face. "This is a first for me." He pointed out as he moved to the side. "Most fall for the trick. The few that do not are usually trying to run out the cell the first chance they get. You were smart not to. Outside are a bunch of people with guns. Come on." The fake doctor then walked out the cell and after a moment Rico followed him out.

In prison guard full riot gear were five people with automatic rifles focused on him. They were using the riot gear to hide their identities as well as protect themselves. But Rico did not care at the moment. He was more curious as the doctor tossed him a pair of handcuffs.

Rico raised an eyebrow before putting them on his hands. The guards visibly relaxed and moved forward. Pushing him towards the direction the fake doctor began walking. He heard the cell door creak and close behind him. They were walking in the opposite direction that they entered.

They soon arrived at a brick wall that appeared to be part of one of the prison's earlier iterations before it was renovated and rebuilt. He was starting to get curious about what they would do. But the wall opened up to reveal a secret passageway.

He whistled in surprise as he activated his Eagle Vision. Breaking everything into lines he could now see the entire thing. There were complex caverns of underground terrain. It expanded deep underground and was like a miniature city with only a few exits to the above ground. This long and curving tunnel is one such entrance and exit.

He heard the grinding of rock before the secret passage closed. He was now entering completely unknown territory. He had never even heard about this place. Yet it existed, and he had a feeling the bat family were completely unaware of it.
