Chapter 91 - Chapter 91

Rico walked out of the cave and whistled as he surveyed the damage. When Coin said someone had attacked he assumed it was just a small attack with nothing besides some gunfire and cars. But what he was seeing was not the result of a small attack.

One building collapsed completely and seemed to have been destroyed by the combination of a garbage truck and an explosion. There were the remains of another garbage truck but it did not manage to collapse a building.

Then there were a number of bodies strewn around. A lot of them were police officers and federal agents. But most of them appear to be the attacker's bodies. There were a number of them that appeared to have been hit with high caliber bullets. It looks like Coin had used a bunch of ammo.

"Looks like a battlefield, but I suppose that is what we should expect of Gotham." Artemis pointed out before pointing with her riot shield.

Rico looked in the direction she pointed and spotted Coin talking with a few police officers and agents. Rico actually recognized one as Commissioner Gordan, he had seen him on the news a few times.

He was well known because of his policy of working with Gotham's vigilantes and his hardcore position against corruption. Of course there was a record of this costing him much in the long run. His marriage suffered, his son was a literal serial killer, and his daughter had been paralyzed by the Joker.

They walked over and Rico waved at Coin. "I saw your handiwork. Good job."

"Ah, those are nothing. You should see the hallway to the apparent I was shooting from. There are bodies littering the hall. Not to mention they had everything from a suicide bomber to someone dressed up like a fucking juggernaut. These guys are well funded or know at least where to hire mercenaries." Coin explained motioning at a building that looked like it had been layered in bullets.

"Huh… okay. Well we completed our part. So we are going to be heading out." Rico decided as he looked around. They would have to travel a few streets before they could get picked up by Gearbox. A minor issue since they had guns and weapons on them.

"Hold on a moment." The commissioner was clearly chewing something. Rico looked at him and raised an eyebrow.

"I would like to head back. Myself and Artemis are covered in blood. While Coin looks like she was in the middle of an explosion." Rico pointed out while nodding at Coin. Who tilted her head and nodded in response. "So unless you have another job for us, we are going to head out."

"We do actually, but not today." Commissioner Gordan answered with a grunt. He pulled out a container and put a small pill-like object in his hand before tossing it in his mouth and chewed for a second. "Sorry, I am struggling to quit smoking."

"I will take that as talking to me makes you want to smoke." Rico chuckled.

Commissioner Gordan rolled his eyes. "Sorry, I will just get right to it." He reached into a pocket and pulled out a USB stick. "The details are on here, but the job is out of town. We need you to find someone and escort them or their body safely back to Gotham."

Rico raised an eyebrow and accepted the stick. "We will take a look. I will let you know if we want to accept the job. Was that all?"

"That is all we have for now. We will contact you if we need more help with this thing. It was supposed to take a few days but…" He looked around at the destruction and dead bodies.

"I know. I figured that was the case." Rico answered and then began walking toward an opening. "I wish you the best of luck." Coin and Artemis followed after him.

Once they were far enough away, Artemis spoke up. "Are we no longer doing this job?"

"Unfortuantly they likely can not afford us." Rico answered as he pulled out his phone and sent a message to Gearbox. Asking him to come pick them up or send someone to pick them up. "Our cost is too high for them to both pay for us and pay the families of the deceased cops. Not to mention the damage to the city in that area will take years to repair."

"So it is less of a reflection on our performance and more of a state on their budget?" Artemis asked. "Why would they hire us in the first place then?"

"The Federal Agents pressured them. I have a feeling our last employer had a hand in it to keep us busy." Rico answered as he looked at his phone and frowned. "Looks like… Gearbox is busy adjusting the engine. He was not expecting us to finish so early. We are going to have to head back… on our own."

"Public transport? Buses?" Coin asked as they stopped for a moment.

"No, that is not a good idea." He motioned at Artemis, "Even in Gotham they would call the police for an Amazonian covered in blood. I will call a vehicle to come pick us up. I think a taxi would be better."

"Why do you think your last employer wants to keep you busy?" Artemis asked as she rested against a pole.

"I am guessing… to keep us from taking an opposing job to what we just did for her. It probably has something to do with the Justice League attacking us. But do not worry about it. I would not accept it in the first place anyways." Rico answered as connected with a taxi company and had one heading to them.

"We could have just called a pay for ride app vehicle." Coin pointed out.

Rico pointed at Artemis again. Artemis pointed at herself in confusion and looked around then down. Coin also looked at her then down. They could see a pool of blood gathering at her feet. Looking back she realized that blood had been leaking off her and was still leaking off her.

"Oh… yeah. Taxis tend to have worse things than blood in them." Coin agreed when she saw his point.
