Chapter 534: Oracle Cells! Aragami! God Arc! God Eater!
As Johannes's expression showed surprise, his gaze gradually filled with fervor. He felt Miki was not simple, especially from the intelligence he had obtained about an existence that transformed into an angel, suspected to be an Aragami.
"Ladies, I hear you are not yet aware of the current human situation. Why don't you let me explain." He did not mention her angelic power, instead explaining the world's situation persuasively.
In the early 2050s, mysterious organisms that devoured everything appeared, named Oracle Cells.
[Inorin's Note: The lore of 'God Eater' revolves around these concepts. Oracle Cells are the building blocks of the monsters, Aragami are the monsters themselves, and God Arcs, wielded by God Eaters, are the only weapons effective against them.]
They preyed on all life, rapidly transforming into various organisms. Ordinary human weapons were useless. Gradually, people named them Aragami. They were humanity's natural enemy.
Aragami are merely groups of single-celled Oracle Cells. Each is a collective. The organ called the core controls the group; once destroyed, the cells will dissipate, but they do not die. The dispersed cells will quickly recombine to form new Aragami.
Humanity's situation became worse. Facing this disaster, they lost more than half their population. Now, in 2071, various forms of Aragami exist.
Until the biotech company Fenrir developed a bio-weapon called a God Arc using Aragami cells and organized a special unit: God Eaters. The operators of the God Arc are the only ones who can defeat Aragami.
As God Eaters grew stronger, humanity finally gained the power to fight back. And this was the Fenrir Far East Branch.
"This is truly a completely different Earth… an apocalypse…" Iroha looked dazed. Saki and Miki were not much different. The sudden influx of information was too much.
Johannes had no intention of giving them time to digest. His goal was Miki. "Miss Okudera, are you willing to contribute to the future of humanity?"
"Contribute?" she was puzzled.
His true intention was revealed. "Your unique power, like that of an angel, might become a turning point in history."
"Angel…" Miki, realizing, became cautious. "How do you need me to help?"
"Don't worry. I just want to study if your power can be replicated."
"Study… Isn't that human experimentation?" Saki's first thought was of scenes from movies. "Miki-nee, absolutely do not agree!" Iroha even stepped in front of her.
Seeing their actions, Miki felt comforted. "Mr. Johannes, while I am willing to help, if it involves physical experiments, I'm afraid I cannot agree."
"Oh, that's a pity," he shook his head, hooking a finger. "A pity I don't have that much time. Your existence is an opportunity. Don't blame me."
"Miki-nee!" Saki warned. Johannes's sudden change made them serious. Following his gesture, they were gradually surrounded.
"Captain, what should we do?" Sakuya Tachibana, the vice-captain of the First Unit, looked at her captain, Lindow Amamiya.
Lindow, who was exhaling smoke rings, frowned and shook his head, signaling not to move. He looked down on the director's threatening behavior. The enemy of the God Arc was the Aragami, not fellow humans.
"Mr. Johannes, I thought you were heroes, but it seems I was mistaken," Miki was exceptionally disappointed.
As the words fell, a golden light shone.
"There really is an angel…" Alisa, a newcomer from the Russian branch, stared blankly at mid-air. It was her first time seeing Miki in her angel state.
Upon seeing the transformation, Johannes became uncontrollably excited. "It's not Oracle Cells! It's a brand new power!! Take down the two people beside her!"
Though excited, he had not lost his reason. Considering her combat power, he chose to take Saki and Iroha to coerce her.
"Heh, you want to study the power I bestowed? You've got a lot of nerve." A cool, disdainful voice came from behind him. Johannes spun around sharply.
"Who!"
The suddenly appearing Ren looked at him playfully. "Me. The man behind Miki."
