Chapter 289: Writing a Report to the League

"Oh~ Isn't this Ash? I almost didn't recognize you~"
Gary's lips curled into a handsome smile as he slowly approached the group, chuckling continuously.
"My, my, someone isn't actually planning to catch Aerodactyl, are they? That's hilarious~"
The moment he appeared, he made a jab at Ash.
Right now, he wanted to do more than just spite Ash; he was itching to write a report directly to the Pokémon League, accusing someone in Pallet Town of illegally creating genetically modified monsters, a violation of all human ethics!
And that monster was Ash!
"Being able to pull Aerodactyl's body into a giant bow is just absurd!!"
He had been secretly observing the previous scene. Could a normal person do something like that?
What the fuck?!
He had even taken a few photos as evidence, hoping the League would take this seriously and capture Ash for dissection and research.
Ash, however, showed no weakness. Back then, they had caught the Aerodactyl together, so Gary naturally had a chance to win it over too. Right now, Ash had to stay true to himself, not be swayed by others, and ideally, even shatter his opponent's mental fortitude.
Thinking of this, Ash smiled and said:
"Oh, Aerodactyl and I are already great buddies, but your relationship must be even better, right? Alas, it seems you have a greater chance. I've lost."
Feigning magnanimity from a position of strength was often more effective at shattering someone's mental fortitude than flaunting one's advantage.
Gary: "..."
As expected, a single sentence was enough to shut him up.
In reality, he had returned to Pallet Town three days earlier than Ash. Taking advantage of his proximity, he had frequently come to feed the Aerodactyl and make small talk.
But without the affection boost from a Luxury Ball, this Aerodactyl was as stubborn as a rock, completely unyielding. So, Gary had considered resorting to force.
But he only had a chance of winning if he used his big brother Green's Pokémon. With his own Pokémon, there was no way he could win a one-on-one battle against this ridiculously powerful Aerodactyl.
Proud as he was, he would never borrow someone else's Pokémon, nor would he resort to ganging up on it.
A physical fight between trainers?
He imagined himself as the bowstring of that full-moon bow in mid-air just now, and he immediately shook his head, his expression darkening once more.
"Damn it, it looks like I have no choice but to write that report!"
Gary was furious.
"Roar!"
Seeing the group of humans stuck in a strange stalemate, the Aerodactyl snorted a puff of white air from its nostrils. It then grabbed the nearby Cranidos by its head with one claw, ignoring the latter's expression. With a beat of its rock-like wings, it took flight, soaring a hundred meters into the sky and heading for the depths of the Back Mountain.
Its speed was immense; in less than half a second, it was just a black dot in the sky.
"Wuwuwu~~"
From a distance, one could still hear the terrified, juvenile cries of the Cranidos.
It's a land-based dragon, it can't fly!!
"..."
Seeing the main attraction depart, Gary raised an eyebrow again. From the looks of it, he no longer had a chance with this Aerodactyl, but he couldn't afford to lose face. So, he casually tossed out a black Poké Ball, which turned out to be a Luxury Ball.
A red light flashed, and a deep blue Pokémon appeared. Its underside had countless spiky tentacles, and on its back was a pale yellow, spiky shell. Its maw was filled with sharp teeth. Instantly, a prehistoric, savage aura filled the air.
Although this prehistoric, savage aura was much weaker than the previous Aerodactyl's, it was far denser than that of the other Fossil Pokémon. Its strength was clearly extraordinary.
"Hehe, I carefully selected this Omastar from the rest. Its prehistoric bloodline is extremely concentrated!"
Gary patted the Omastar's shell as if patting a watermelon and said with an arrogant look.
Cunning as he was, he naturally knew not to put all his eggs in one basket. While trying to build a relationship with the Aerodactyl, he had also made backup plans. In just three days, he had successfully lured away a Fossil Pokémon, convincing it to voluntarily join his team.
One had to know, the aptitude of every Fossil Pokémon here was remarkable; it was just that none were as exaggeratedly powerful as the Aerodactyl.
"Oh, is it stronger than Aerodactyl?"
Gary's brow twitched. He emphasized, "But I've already successfully caught it!"
"Oh, is it stronger than Aerodactyl?"
Gary flew into a rage and shouted, "Besides, it's not like you're guaranteed to catch Aerodactyl either!"
"So, is it stronger than Aerodactyl or not?"
Gary slapped his thigh and roared, "Can you fucking stop mentioning Aerodactyl!"
"Ah, is someone getting triggered?"
"Ash, you scoundrel!"
Gary was utterly enraged. He almost marched right up, grabbed Ash by the collar, and gave him a friendly neighborhood Seismic Toss. But then he remembered the dragon-man bow in the sky from earlier and forcefully retracted his hand.
A man of high society doesn't resort to violence.
Seeing his opponent was furious yet could still maintain his mental fortitude, Ash inwardly praised Gary's current resolve. On the surface, however, he remained perfectly calm and spoke again:
"Oh, let me rephrase then. Um, last month I caught Articuno. Don't believe me? There's a video online. Go search for 'Congo Black Uncle' on P-Station and you'll see it."
Gary: "?!"
Gary's mental fortitude instantly shattered, his anger reaching its peak.
Damn it, how could a third-rate novice trainer like Ash manage to catch Articuno!?
Damn!
Fine! I'll go and catch that Zapdos!
This time, however, Gary calmed down quickly. He remembered seeing news that a wild Zapdos had recently been spotted near the Power Plant. He had just been too busy luring the Aerodactyl these past few days to go. Now that Aerodactyl was a lost cause, it seemed he had to find time to go and catch that legendary bird.
It's covered in spikes, perfect for me!
Thinking of this, Gary immediately decided to call out Green's tool-like Pidgeot to use the HM Fly and head to Cerulean City in the north.
After landing, he would first write the report and mail it to the Pokémon League, and then go to the Power Plant to capture that Zapdos!
Just as he took out the Pidgeot's Poké Ball, Gary suddenly thought of something. He put the Poké Ball away, a cold smile suddenly forming on his lips. His gaze was as sharp as a sword as he turned his head to face Ash.
"By the way, if you really had Articuno with you, you would have sent it out by now, right? Let me take a wild guess... Articuno isn't with you, is it?"
This time, it was Ash's turn for his expression to darken.
Gary rubbed his chin and continued:
"Hmm... a powerful Pokémon, caught but not by your side... I'm just spitballing here, my dear Ash, don't take it to heart. Could it be that the trainer's strength wasn't enough, and Articuno... ran away?"
As he finished speaking, Ash's expression changed drastically.
"Oh, no, no, that's just a wild guess. I'm just talking nonsense, there's probably no basis for it."
Gary quickly refuted himself, then covered his mouth with a grin, his eyes crinkling into a comical, mocking shape as he continued his assault:
"Could it be that someone is comforting themselves right now, thinking, 'It didn't run away, it just left for a while'? Here's a fun fact: when you start comforting yourself, you've already admitted it's true~ Heehee~"
Ash: "!!!"
This time, it was Ash's mental fortitude that shattered!
Articuno releasing him, its trainer, had always been an extremely sensitive memory for him. Now, Gary had torn it open and rubbed salt in the wound. His composure completely shattered.
Seeing this, Gary sneered inwardly. With Ash's clumsy level of psychology, he actually thought he could play mind games with a grandmaster of taunts like him?
Pathetic!
"Gary, you scoundrel!"
Ash was utterly enraged. He almost marched right up, grabbed Gary by the collar, and gave him a friendly neighborhood Seismic Toss. But then he thought of Gary's frequent wheezing and hands-on-hips posture.
Oh.
This time, there was no "but."
Ash had already grabbed him by the collar.
Gary: "?"
Fun fact: never play mind games with someone you can't beat in a fight. Because if you lose the argument, you won't dare to get physical.
But if you win, the other person... can.
