At the Emergency room
Inside the sterile silence of Sahlon's hospital, security had been doubled. Fans had already tried sneaking in. Reporters, too.
Eldrin sat in a stiff plastic chair nearby, shoulders squared, knuckles white around the cup of untouched coffee in his hands. He hadn't slept. His mind was racing. He and their manager were still waiting for the doctor to come out of the emergency room
"How did I not see this coming?"
"How long was he planning this?"
He could still feel the weight of Kiolle's body when he'd found him, slumped on the bathroom floor, a razor blade next to him as blood gushed out.
His mind grew blank and he couldn't even react properly. He worked on autopilot. Called the ambulance. Applied pressure. Held Kiolle's hand all the way there. Now, he sat in the sterile quiet of the hospital. Their manager, Mark was on the other side of the waiting room frantically gesturing his hands while making calls.
"Family of Kiolle Evermore", said a doctor wearing a mask and a ridiculously large lab coat. Eldrin and Mark rushed towards him in a hurry." You are here, please follow me", she said as she gestured towards the direction of her office.
When they finally sat down, she began her report "Mr. Eldrin, Mr Mark, thank you for waiting. I know it's been a long night."
Eldrin asked quietly and a bit tense, "How is he?"
"Physically? Stable. We managed to stop the bleeding just in time. He was very lucky. Another ten minutes and… well, it would have been a different conversation." Kiran, as the nametag read, offered the report.
Before Mark could give an opinion she continued gently, "He had deep lacerations to both wrists. We had to suture both the radial and ulnar arteries on the left wrist. The right wrist was shallower but still serious. About 5 stitches on each. There may be some nerve damage. We'll need to monitor mobility in his fingers."
Mark swallowed nervously and asked, "And, uh… was it a suicide attempt? Not caused by someone else, perhaps?" Even Eldrin fully turned to the doctor for some denial of the obvious, due to a small spark of hope which was promptly crushed to bits.
"From the way the cuts were angled and the hesitation marks, yes. This wasn't accidental. He knew where to cut and how deep. Which… is troubling." The reply came making Eldrin to wince and make a sharp inhale.
His jaw clenched tightly as he replied, "He didn't leave a note. He didn't say anything to anyone."
The doctor could only spare them few glances of pity before she continued. "That's common. Suicide attempts aren't always loud. Sometimes the silence is the warning."
Eldrin could only lower his head and mutter while Mark rubbed his back soothingly, "I should've done something when I. Anything"
The doctor only gently replied, "You can't blame yourself. People who are determined, often go out of their way to hide their pain. And your friend clearly didn't want to be found—he lost a lot of blood. If whoever called the ambulance had waited a little longer…"
"I was the one who found him," Eldrin said while wiping his silently flowing tears.
Her gaze softened once more as she replied, "Then you saved his life. And I mean that." There remained an awkward silence for some time before she continued, "We're moving him to a quieter room for recovery. He's still sedated but might wake up within the next few hours. When he does, it would help if someone familiar is there. The aftermath of something like this is disorienting."
"I'll stay," Eldrin answered in conviction
"I'll have a nurse take you to his new room. If he wakes up, speak calmly. Don't pressure him. Just... be there."
Eldrin nodded with a determined gaze.
