Chapter 110 - Heading to North Dakota

"How did they find the missile silos?! How did they destroy the outermost launch silo cover?!"

As a retired Marine Corps sergeant, Bob Eagle was familiar with the United States' nuclear triad.

The Minuteman III was currently the only land-based intercontinental ballistic missile the US had. The Peacekeeper intercontinental ballistic missile had been retired in 2005. The existing missiles were stored at three Air Force bases: Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming, and Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana.

The 90th Space Wing, the 91st Space Wing, and the 341st Space Wing were responsible for protecting these deadly nuclear warheads.

It seemed like the intercontinental ballistic missiles, which should be the nation's most important assets, were not guarded as strongly as one might expect. For example, the 91st Security Forces, the armed forces of the 91st Space Wing, had only seven hundred-odd people and needed to guard fifteen missile silos and one hundred fifty intercontinental ballistic missiles distributed across eight thousand five hundred square miles.

Because personnel needed to rotate, after performing four days of security guard duty, they would have three days of rest and one day of training. Only ten staff members were assigned to each missile launcher: six guards, one silo manager, one cook, and a two-person launch team, responsible for the ten Minuteman III land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles inside the silo.

The guard force seemed very weak, but these missile silos had never had any problems. The most recent large security incidents were only the 91st Space Wing losing a box of grenade launchers while traveling between two launch silos, and a fake launch silo catching fire while unattended.

This was because the US military had set up a large number of fake launch silos in the middle of the fifteen real missile silos. Some fake launch silos were even only two or three kilometers from residential areas and had been recorded by Google Street View.

The fact that the Lizardman could so easily find the real missile silos clearly indicated he wasn't an ordinary individual.

The missile silo covers were 115.4 centimeters thick, composed of 90 centimeters of ordinary reinforced concrete and 25.4 centimeters of borate radiation-proof reinforced concrete. Weighing 105 tons, they could withstand 7 MPa of pressure. Even if terrorists discovered the real missile silos, they wouldn't be able to damage such sturdy covers.

"We're heading to Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota first. You'll understand once you see the on-site data. The attackers took a Minuteman III's MK21 Vehicle, which contains a W83 Warhead with a yield of 475 kilotons. We must find it as soon as possible!"

Due to the treaty between the US and Russia on further reductions and limitations of offensive strategic weapons, the Minuteman III was upgraded mid-life, and the MK12A Vehicle was converted into the MK21 single-warhead type. This reduced the difficulty of their search; otherwise, searching for several smaller MIRVs would be a nightmare.

If this warhead were detonated over the center of New York City, the shockwave would even affect nearby Jersey City, turning the entire city center into a sea of fire and ruins.

Although the Pentagon didn't believe the attackers could unlock the keys and safety devices on the warhead, S.H.I.E.L.D. still had to do everything possible to prevent the worst-case scenario.

A large Quinjet landed on the lawn outside the hospital. Peter Parker and Bob Eagle entered the cabin, gawking at the various advanced equipment inside as if they were country bumpkins visiting a grand mansion.

The Quinjet activated its stealth mode and disappeared into the air. The fuselage shook, and under the powerful thrust of the two engines, it hovered in the air. Bright flames spewed from the jet's tail nozzles, driving the aircraft to accelerate and climb rapidly, heading towards North Dakota.

The warhead's size and weight made it difficult to move. S.H.I.E.L.D. immediately sealed off all transportation routes in North Dakota, meaning the warhead was still in the state.

Other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents had already rushed to Minot Air Force Base. Natasha had come to New York specifically to bring Bob Eagle and Peter Parker.

Without their help, even the elite S.H.I.E.L.D. agents might not be able to fight that mysterious Lizardman.

Bob Eagle looked at the ground flashing by at high speed, surprised. Having retired less than a year ago, he was quite familiar with the U.S. military's current weapons and equipment. The fighter jet's air combat capabilities aside, its optical stealth and vertical take-off and landing abilities were at least thirty years ahead of the U.S. military.

Natasha opened the 3D projection in the Quinjet's cabin and began playing a video taken by a camera inside the launch silo.

The Lizardman had destroyed most of the cameras, but one recently installed camera had survived, recording this precious video.

The Lizardman in the video was much thinner than ordinary people, without the exaggerated muscles of the Lizardmen from the New York City riots. His tail was also shorter, and he had terrifying, sharp dorsal fins.

He stood on a personal flying device, similar to a skateboard, and attacked the armed personnel in the launch silo, laughing maniacally.

"Do you remember anything?"

Natasha asked.

"No, I don't. He's completely different from all the other Lizardmen. At least, we don't have such exaggerated dorsal fins. Maybe it's a different species of lizard."

Cade Eagle shook his head.

"Every creature requires adjustments to the parameters in the decay rate formula when creating serums, due to differences in genes and body type. Only those involved in cross-species gene transfer projects know the decay rate formula. If this Lizardman used a different type of lizard, we can easily find clues about him through the project team."

Peter Parker said, his thinking was very clear, and immediately provided a very important clue.

The cross-species gene transfer project only saw a breakthrough after he provided the decay rate formula to Professor Connors. There are only a few people who have the ability to create animal serums.

"This clue is very important! I'll report to headquarters and have them investigate everyone on the project team. Do you have any suspects?"

Natasha was a little excited. The Osborn Group was claiming that all the experimental data had been stolen by unknown armed personnel posing as security, a lame excuse that wouldn't fool a child. Because of this, they knew very little about the mysterious project and didn't realize that producing the Lizard serum wasn't as simple as they thought.

"Dr. Ratha. He was Professor Connors' assistant, but he represented the interests of the Osborn Group, and his relationship with everyone in the project team was terrible."

Peter Parker immediately thought of Dr. Ratha.

"I suspect that he was the source of the Lizard serum that appeared at the New York City Veterans Hospital."
