Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: Magnus (Conclusion)

The so-called [Magnus's Soul] was actually a very interesting thing.

It wasn't until the moment Morgan truly swung her blade that she discovered what a fascinating mental kingdom this theoretical brother of hers possessed:

Magnus's soul was fragmented; it was not a complete whole. Instead, countless minute individuals were stitched onto a massive main body named [Magnus the Red King], making it appear like a formidable and sturdy behemoth, thereby supporting the soul and mental world of a Primarch.

The connection between this main body and its individual parts was not firm. On the contrary, the fissures between them were clearly visible to the naked eye. Morgan could even discern that every fragment of the soul, regardless of size or importance, possessed its own logic and thoughts.

Differences existed between them, yet there was no so-called master-servant relationship. Each unique individual seemed capable of detaching from the main body and maintaining its own existence.

In other words, this seemingly powerful, solid, and complete soul was actually neither powerful nor solid, nor could it even be called complete. It seemed inherently destined to await the moment Magnus would be defeated. At that time, all the soul fragments could legitimately disperse.

To put it more plainly, Magnus, theoretically the Primarch with the strongest psychic power, was, from a mental perspective... essentially a person waiting to die.

Morgan suddenly felt like laughing.

But after a brief moment of amusement, a terrifying chill spread throughout her body.

Magnus, a dignified Primarch, one of the most noble and powerful figures in the entire Imperium—what had his future truly been planned into, that even a [complete soul] was not needed?

And as her gaze wandered across Magnus's many souls, this bone-chilling cold deepened.

[Magnus the Red King], the true Magnus, that largest and most powerful entity.

[Ahgour], the warrior, symbolizing the aspect of Magnus capable of wielding a scythe and power.

[Nikaea], betrayal, upon which were woven Magnus's obstinacy and tragic end.

[Holy Terra], virtue, encompassing the most noble qualities and unwavering loyalty, its counsel always calm and rational.

[Cadmus], exploration and retrospection, the ultimate embodiment of Magnus's excavation of countless lost knowledge under its instinctive guidance.

[Prospero], she could not discern what this fragment represented, but she saw a snippet of a long-bearded warrior deep in thought within it.

[Ahriman], there was nothing here, only countless screaming faces.

Looking at the names floating before her, and the purpose and future of every fragment her mind could perceive, Morgan even had an illusion: she felt as if she stood before a feudal lord's dining table, and beneath her blade was a freshly hunted wild boar. Amidst a non-existent feast, she could carve out her preferred portion according to its fatness and nutritional value.

The only problem was that this [wild boar] before her was of her own kind.

Then what was she?

This profoundly philosophical question was apparently not allocated further thought, for the true Magnus seemed on the verge of waking.

Under this urgency, Morgan's blade finally pointed to a part of the Primarch's soul.

[Kalimachus], symbolizing the manipulation, change, and secrets Magnus possessed and encountered. Even for a Primarch, this was a [great tonic] in relevant aspects.

Compared to the souls of ordinary humans and xenos, a Primarch's soul, even a small fragment, was a colossal entity that required both hands to stabilize. And after obtaining what she desired, Morgan turned and left without hesitation. She was not at all worried about whether other problems would arise after Magnus awoke, because the long laughter never ceased throughout her actions.

That grotesque evil god had not left; clearly, It would handle everything.

Looking at Kozorte's remains and armor, which had imperceptibly vanished, and even Magnus's hands, which had become clean again, Morgan felt the inner chill and couldn't help but quicken her pace.

Everything that followed seemed natural.

After trekking through the boundless, vast ocean for an unknown duration, Ahriman and his group suddenly discovered some new traces. At the insistence of the Thousand Sons Captain, they continuously explored along this faint trail.

Finally, in a Warp ruin completely devastated by a storm, Ahriman found Morgan: scarred and on the verge of death. If not for the timely rescue by Ahriman and Athavval, they would undoubtedly have lost this distinguished mortal advisor.

But the matter did not end there. In the time that followed, the group continued to search the vast ocean for an unknown period, until Ahriman felt they had been lost for a full month. Then, Magnus's aura finally actively found his sons.

The reunion between father and sons was comforting, although the Primarch brought a tragedy: while searching for Ahriman and his group, Magnus accidentally discovered a Warp portal that appeared and disappeared suddenly. The Primarch had merely glanced at it casually, only to find one of his sons being sucked into it.

That poor Thousand Son was violently blown to the center of the vast ocean and then swept away by a fierce storm. It was unknown which segment of time-space he would be pulled into; even the Primarch could not trace him.

Only then did Ahriman sadly mention Kozorte's sudden disappearance: clearly, the two events were linked. This poor Thousand Sons warrior, Kozorte, had become another victim of the Warp's strange, boundless tides. The Primarch and his sons lamented the misfortune of their kin and the unpredictable nature of this ancient realm.

As Magnus vividly recounted his story of the Warp portal, Morgan even carefully observed the Primarch's true thoughts: she had to admit that whether Magnus had deceived himself or if his memories had been distorted by the evil god, the Primarch genuinely believed his own narrative.

Magnus genuinely believed that Kozorte's death had nothing to do with him, and the so-called conversation with a strange deity, his own despair and pleas, and even the brief exchange with Morgan, had all completely vanished from the Primarch's memory. In Magnus's perception, he was still the father who had saved the Legion, and although this Warp exploration had been fraught with twists and turns, everything was still under control.

Morgan could not even be sure if this was the work of a Chaos God, or if Magnus had truly deceived himself.

If it was the former, then it was interesting.

And if it was the latter...

Then it was even more interesting.

"And yet, our exploration with Father did not stop. We eventually successfully found an ancient and safe Warp relic, and there we found an exquisite healing spell, enough to cure the soul wounds of Athavval and the others."

"And for Morgan, our Father, after learning that method, merely touched her, and her pain was healed."

"However, mortals are, after all, different from us. She still needs to recuperate in her room."

"Isn't that perfectly normal?"

Forsyth listened to Ahriman's account, not forgetting to leisurely swirl his wine glass.

"Although in your personal perception, you wandered for a very long time, the actual situation is that Father and you only ascended for three standard Terra days. This illusion of time is one of the signs of the Warp. As for Morgan... ha, I admit she is very capable, but these matters are still beyond her capabilities."

"She may perform excellently in work and battle—I would not disparage her excellence, Ahriman, I have fought alongside her. But as a mortal, the fundamental gap between her and us Astartes cannot be erased."

"Mortals are, after all, mortals."

Ahriman savored the wine he had personally brewed. He did not refute Forsyth's words. After a brief silence, he decided to discuss work.

"Anything happen these past few days?"

"Nothing much. The Iron Warriors haven't left yet, though. Apparently, Lord Perturabo wants to have another chat with our Father. As for his sons, they're holding a selection. They're conducting a live-fire exercise on that dead world next to the Morning Star, even using aerial forces and heavy weapons. It's said that quite a few have already been sent to the medicae."

"Selection?"

"Yes, they're selecting members for attached detachments, deciding who will go to support the war in the northeastern galaxy. You know, Ahriman, the Emperor has already ordered most Legions to send support there. Even we need to send some people. Except for the Shadowmoon Fenrisian Wolves and the Ultramarines; they're vacationing in the western galaxy~"

"Northeastern galaxy..."

Ahriman pondered these words.

"Is the First Legion unable to hold on anymore?"

"The Dark Angels haven't directly asked for help, but the Fifth Legion and the Nineteenth Legion have expressed that their front lines are under great pressure. And then there's Leman Russ's Sixth Legion, those barbarians, they're practically screaming about being under too much pressure and needing reinforcements right next to everyone's ears."

"And speaking of which, it is said that the war in the eastern galaxy is indeed not optimistic. The front lines have already lost several permanent Fortress Worlds, and even Titan Legions and expeditionary fleets have been completely annihilated in battle."

"It's just a xenos force. There shouldn't be a need for such exaggeration. It's not like it's a huge Ork Empire."

"Anyway, in their mouths..."

Forsyth took another sip of wine.

"That [Ran Dan] is far more terrifying than Orks."

The author's note: The concept of [Magnus's soul being stitched together] is my personal interpretation, but the names of these soul fragments and their functions are all written by GW themselves, specifically appearing in the story where Ahriman retrieves Magnus's various souls.

Next, the story of Morning Star will almost conclude. The content of the next volume will be Ran Dan and Lion El'Jonson...

Hmm, in all senses, this will be a high-difficulty instance.
