32. Let's Go, All the Way to the 20th Floor (2)

After witnessing Catherine's terrifying real-life axe skills firsthand, I quickly opened my stats screen and upgraded my combat skill, "Weapon Mastery."

If Catherine were to betray us, I had a feeling I wouldn't be able to win in a one-on-one fight against her.

'Even our old sergeant couldn't swing an axe like that...'

...

After securing unit 1103 by tossing two zombies out the window, I completely disabled the elevator to control the movement of other survivors. With the search progressing faster than expected, we changed our plan to clear up to the 20th floor today.

By the time we cleared the 14th floor, Catherine and I had taken out six more zombies, growing more skilled and coordinated as a team. Catherine's ability to decapitate zombies with a single axe swing was truly terrifying...

The only good news was that her "betrayal detection" value had dropped to 10%.

Then, upon reaching the 15th floor, five new blue dots-representing survivors-appeared on the scanning map: two in unit 1603, three in 1704.

We quickly swept the otherwise empty 15th floor and headed to the 16th. There, a barricade made from chairs, desks, and cabinets blocked the stairs. It was clearly built for "sealing off" rather than ordinary access-evidence that a survivor group existed in the upper floors.

Since floors 6–15 were now secure, the barricade was pointless. We began carefully dismantling the stacked furniture, making sure nothing fell suddenly. About five minutes later, with half the obstruction gone, we heard a door open and a woman's trembling voice:

"Wh-who's there?"

...

Fortunately, the conversation went well. We were led to unit 1604 and able to speak "peacefully" with 13 upper-floor survivors-though everyone was armed.

"So… you're all from the 7th floor?"

"Yes. We secured all floors from 6 to 15 on our way here."

A man in his 50s, who seemed to be the group's leader by his sturdy build and the way others looked to him, eyed our weapons warily and confirmed our story.

As we explained the situation below and how we'd secured the building, a range of emotions spread across the survivors' faces: some felt relief, others hope, and a few looked worried.

Just then, a girl who looked like a middle schooler spoke up:

"Um, was there anyone alive in 1204? My mom went to give food to the lady there… She looks like this?"

She showed us a photo on her phone.

The moment we saw it, the three of us froze. We'd seen a zombie with a very similar face-specifically, the one Catherine had split from crown to chest with her axe on the 12th floor.

In other words, we had killed the girl's mother, who had already turned into a zombie.

We were at a loss for how to tell her this, but Aunt Hyeyeon, the adult among us, gently took the girl into a bedroom.

"No, it can't be! Mom!!"

Soon, we heard her anguished screams through the door, and the faces of those left in the living room darkened.

It was clear that recruiting the upper-floor survivors would have to wait.

'And there's not really anyone here who qualifies as a MILF. The women are all either too young or just ajummas.'

As I unconsciously scanned the survivors for any MILFs, my phone vibrated on my left forearm.

Bzzz

'A quest? Now?'

[New Quest: Make Allies]

You've encountered a survivor group for the first time.

When facing countless zombies and other survivors, having a large number of allies is essential.

Use any means necessary to make good use of these people.

Form a friendly relationship with the upper-floor survivor group, or make them your subordinates.

Reward: 30MP

⚠︎ If you fail, you may become enemies with this survivor group.

...

About 10 minutes after the girl started crying in the bedroom of 1604, her sobs and Aunt's gentle consoling continued through the door. Meanwhile, I pulled the group's leader, Park Sanghyuk, aside for a private conversation.

Standing up, I saw he was shorter than me but clearly well-built-a man who looked like he worked with his hands. I spoke first.

"We're also very sorry about the middle schooler who lost her mother."

"Ah, yes… But if she'd already turned into a zombie, there was nothing else you could do. We'll take care of Sua. And thank you for the news from below."

Park Sanghyuk, who was at least 30 years my senior, even bowed his head slightly and spoke politely.

My first impression was good-he seemed like someone you could "trade" with, like a civilized person.

So I got straight to the point.

"Since we're in similar situations, I'll get right to it. The reason I asked to speak privately is to discuss a 'trade' with your group."

"A trade?"

"Yes. Have you seen the NewTube video with the weird zombie whose head splits open?"

"Oh, the one that splits from the crown…"

"That's right."

"But why bring up that bizarre zombie…?"

"What I want to trade with you is 'clean water.'"

When I suddenly mentioned "trade" and the tadpoles in the zombie's head, Park Sanghyuk looked a bit confused.

But as soon as I said "clean water" was the item, a mix of suspicion and hope appeared on his face.

Sensing this was the moment to drive the point home, I continued.

"As you know, we don't know when the water and electricity in this apartment will be cut off. It could happen in a minute."

"That's true, but… how can you produce clean water?"

"I can't give details, but I have a stable water source, purification device, and even a way to generate electricity. I want to trade the water I produce with your group."

When he heard I had some kind of "device" that could produce clean water, Park Sanghyuk's face instantly showed the greed anyone would feel.

At the same time, his betrayal detection value jumped from about 20% to 40%.

I put my hand on the knife at my belt and gave a very direct warning.

"If you're thinking of doing anything to us to steal my facility, I recommend you drop it. There's an anti-theft device-it won't work unless I'm there."

"N-no, I'd never-"

"Oh, and the blonde foreigner inside is amazing with an axe. She's never failed to split a zombie's head in one swing all the way up here."

"Gulp…"

As I delivered what anyone would call a threat, Park Sanghyuk glanced around 1604 and swallowed hard.

Soon, I saw his betrayal value drop sharply to 25%-proof my threat had worked.

Turns out, this guy really cares about his people-a true leader.

Next, after brushing his forehead, he asked the most "important" question of the conversation.

"So what do you want in exchange for the water?"

"What I want is very simple. Your 'goodwill.'"
