Chapter 3 - The first hunt

New World, 27 E.C

It's been an entire year since the Great Jag's assault. Evans Had learned a lot about his new life since then. The first being that he was an anjanath cub and not a trex! 'WHY!? Of all things, why did my new life have to involve a world revolving around not getting eaten!?' The worry soon faded as he later learned that his 'energy spot' was actually a small leyline of the New World. Monsters absorb energy from these areas, making them a high-priority nesting ground for those wanting to grow to their max potential. It seems to be a passive process, though, as although his mom hangs around the area, barely a fraction of what he could absorb even passes beyond the ground.

When he does it, however, it's like a stream, constantly entering at his will. Evans could feel the benefits too, as his talons gleamed with an unprecedented sharpness, and his jaw muscles were stronger than ever.

"Grrrmmmm..."

Evans snapped out of his thoughts at the soft growl. The momjanath grabbed Evans by his nape before setting off to the plains. The momjanath couldn't be more excited- today was the day her baby went on his first hunt! Ducking through the large vegetation, the momjanth carried Evans into the grass that was tall enough to hide the two of them. Setting him down, the momjanath nudged Evans to pay attention. Before them lay an unsuspecting herd of aptonoth. The momjanath got as low as she could to get as close as possible. She soon got within 3 meters of the most separated aptonoth. She knew it was time.

With a quick jump, the brute wyvern pounced onto the now startled aptonoth. Her jaws clamped around the aptonoth's throat and held tight. The large herbivore struggled for a few minutes before falling limp. Under Evans' shocked gaze, His mom dragged the corpse back. The duo ate the colossal beast, with Evans half filling his stomach while his mom devoured large chunks. Bones left behind, two anjanaths, one large, one small, head eastward to track the aptonoth herd that had fled. It didn't take long, as the idiots simply stopped next door, with a large swath of grass to cover Evans. 'Some creatures never learn, it seems...'

Although he thought it, he wasn't complaining, as this made it easier to track down food. Imitating his mom, Evans waited in the large plant life until a small aptonoth wandered too close. It was most likely a baby, as it was merely 2 meters, a fifth of an adult's size. Even then, it was still twice as big as Evans. HE pauses, as taking a life is still a heavy burden to bear. Yet, the idea of going hungry was far worse, so he would act on his more selfish decisions. 'Sorry, it's either you or me. And I'm not dying twice if I can help it.'

Final prayers made for his victim, Evans crawled amongst the watching willows, twisted and hollow as they watch a cycle they need not care for. The distance closed, and Evans no longer hesitated. With a strong bound, His fangs sank into the tender flesh of the throat. The creature gave a pained cry as it tried to shake Evans off. His tiny body swayed wildly, yet his jaws held firm. Two adult aptonoth, likely the parents, heard the cry and were rushing over, a gaze of righteous fury marring their blubbery faces. Their false bravado quickly disappeared, however, when the anjanath parent stepped in.

AughGRAWWWWWWWW! GRAWWWWWWW! (SCRAM! GET OUTTA HERE!)

With a resounding heartfelt conversation, the two aptonoth, along with the rest of the herd, fled deeper into the ancient forest, likely to be poached by other opportunistic hunters. 'Thanks for the assist, Mom!' After a few more minutes, the baby aptonoth fell, likely cursing the cowards it used to call parents in its heart. Yet the anjanaths did not care, as now they had food for the next evening.
