Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: The Wolf and the Bath

~Calix POV~

I bolted into the highlands forest that night, my wolf senses on high alert after spotting those creepy glowing eyes watching Annalyn and me. The mist was thick, curling around the trees like a bad omen, and my nose twitched, picking up a faint scent—sharp, musky, not quite Visaya but definitely trouble. Whoever was out there, they were gone now, but they'd left traces. I shifted back to human form, crouching by a patch of disturbed dirt near the estate's edge.

"Got something," I muttered, spotting broken twigs and a faint boot print. A camp, maybe. I followed the trail, moving quiet, until I hit a small clearing—abandoned, but recent. A firepit, still warm, and a crumpled water bottle. Sloppy. These guys weren't pros.

I doubled back to the estate, finding Matteo in the kitchen, grabbing a beer. His shirt was rumpled, like he'd been pacing. "Find anything?" he asked, popping the cap.
