Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: "The Royal Reception"

The massive wooden gates opened with a deep creak, and a gust of air scented with spices and fresh herbs welcomed us in.

Crossing through, we were met with a panorama we hadn't expected: wide streets of polished stone, houses with green rooftops, and elevated walkways that connected buildings as if they were branches of a giant tree.

People stopped to watch us. Their ears twitched with every step Ragan took at the front, and from time to time, their eyes drifted toward me with expressions ranging from curiosity to a silent, "What's this guy doing here?"

"I feel like… we're drawing way too much attention," I whispered.

"We're being escorted by their king," Zara explained, analyzing the situation. "And seeing humans in their territory must be highly unusual."

"To me, it looks like they're just trying to figure out whether we're dangerous… or just lost tourists," Maya added.

Noko, on the other hand, greeted everyone cheerfully:

"Hi, Mrs. Mery! Oh, good morning, Mr. Rorik! Still selling those meat pies-nya?"

"Noko, do you know everyone in this place?" I asked.

"Most of them!" she replied happily.

We arrived at the central plaza. At its center stood an imposing building: a palace of pale stone with golden and green details and columns. In front of the entrance, a group of guards formed two perfect rows.

"Welcome," one of them said, bowing toward Ragan. "Everything is ready for your return, Your Majesty."

"Thank you." Ragan turned toward us. "Follow me."

We climbed a wide staircase, and as we crossed over, we found ourselves in a corridor adorned with tapestries depicting what seemed to be the history of their clan. There were images of felines leaping over massive beasts, grand feasts, and even a tapestry where I recognized Ragan's figure—apparently younger, but with the same defiant expression.

"I can't decide if I'm impressed or intimidated," I muttered.

"Both," Maya replied.

In a spacious hall, decorated with cushions and carpets, we were served a sweet drink with an intense aroma. I sat on the edge, trying to hide my nerves.

"Ren," Ragan said, taking a seat across from me. "Here you are an honored guest. But remember that everyone will be watching how you conduct yourself."

"Th-thank you very much! We'll gladly accept your hospitality," I replied with a tense smile.

Maya looked around at the décor with curiosity.

"I'll admit, I wasn't expecting such a refined place. I thought it'd be more like a training ground full of sparring matches."

"Hahaha! Not everything revolves around fighting, young lady. We have our traditions," Ragan said. "And soon, you'll come to know them."

A side door opened, and a female figure of elegant bearing entered. Her ears were the same green shade as Noko's, her smile serene, and her eyes studied me as if scanning my very soul.
