MHGA Chapter 249 – David's Confession, Part I

"Facing me, and you still have the leisure to spew that crap?"

Even as David spoke those words, Adam Smasher had already raised his other mechanical arm, leveling a shotgun at David and the Lucy cradled in his arms—and fired without mercy.

David instantly activated a Sandevistan-like acceleration, turning around and shielding Lucy with his back. The shotgun pellets embedded themselves into his flesh, but within seconds, David's body began forcefully expelling them.

It was regeneration on par with Muzan's—made possible by the Demon Series gear, an extreme piece of Hunter equipment forged by a Felyne blacksmith who abandoned all other functionality in favor of pure, relentless healing.

"David… run." Lucy spoke softly from within his embrace. "That's Adam Smasher… You… you have nothing to do with any of this, you…"

"It's okay, Lucy."

With his back to Adam Smasher, David held Lucy tightly. "I'll turn Night City… into the moon you can live on."

"I'll make your dream come true—your real dream." One of David's hands gently rested on the back of Lucy's neck, brushing against the cyberdeck interface that had been surgically embedded.

That modification was the mark Arasaka had left on her body.

Because she saw every part of this world as a living hell… she had longed for the moon.

So David would grant her true wish.

Lucy's eyes widened in disbelief. "How do you kno—"

She… she never told David her dream. So how did he know?

"I'm a prophet, actually. So I know everything." David smiled at her. "I even know… that one day, you'll live happily here."

The next moment, the impatient Adam Smasher blew open the back of David's skull with another shotgun blast.

But even as his brain was violently re-forming, David kept smiling at Lucy and said, "I told you before… I like you just the way you are. No—what I mean is… I just like you."

"So… I'm gonna become a legend!"

David let go of Lucy and suddenly turned, charging through the next blast as he hurled a punch at Adam Smasher. "I'll steal you back from the moon! I'll drag you out of this hell called Night City and into a better world!"

"ADAM… SMASHERRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!"

David roared, his fist slamming into Adam Smasher's chestplate.

With the crunch of snapping bones, the tank-like cyborg was sent flying, smashing through the factory's distant wall and crashing into a pile of rubble.

"Brother Maine!! Please take Lucy and go!!"

David's right wrist and fingers were fractured from that punch, but under the Demon Series' Extreme Regeneration, they were already mending rapidly.

"Leave Adam Smasher to me!!!"

David drew his Gunlance and charged toward where Adam Smasher had landed.

The cyborg burst from the rubble with a mechanical shriek, his red cyber-eye blazing.

"You piece of trash! You think you're something special?! You're just meat—I'M the goddamn meat grinder!" On his chest, the dent of a fist was still visible, and it sent Adam Smasher into a furious frenzy.

"You scrapheap bastard! Even if I have to crawl back from hell, I'll make sure you're completely fucking destroyed!!"

Steel monster and teenage Hunter collided again, the thunderous impact echoing sharply through the empty factory.

Maine didn't hesitate.

He didn't know why David had become so strong, but he understood one thing… this was their last chance.

David had spoken like that because he knew he couldn't protect everyone alone. That's why he entrusted Lucy—even her—to Maine.

"Dorio!! Pilar!! Rebecca!!"

Maine shouted, scooping Rebecca into his arms and leaping toward Falco. He kicked open the overturned car's door and yanked Falco out.

Then, Maine tossed Rebecca toward Pilar, while he himself rushed straight toward Lucy's position.

"All you worthless meatbags! You're dying here!"

Adam Smasher noticed the others escaping and launched a barrage of micro-missiles from his body, clearly intending to level the entire area and kill them all.

But—at the moment the missiles left his body, David shot forward against the explosion wind and reached Adam Smasher's face. He slammed down with the Gunlance and pulled the trigger.

The Wyvern's Fire detonated in full at point-blank range, setting off all the missiles midair.

The massive explosion at close range hurled Adam Smasher back. David, caught in the blast, was burned beyond recognition—flesh scorched away to reveal exposed organs and ribs.

His body rapidly regenerated, but the searing pain only fueled David's fury. Bloodshot eyes blazing, he charged again at Adam Smasher.

"Goddamn brat…" Adam Smasher realized that he was actually being stalled—by a mere kid.

While David bought time, Maine had slung Lucy over his shoulder. Dorio grabbed the immobilized Kiwi, and Pilar carried Rebecca. The group made a break for the factory's exit.

"Maine! David…"

Lucy looked back at David's figure, still battling, and tried to break free from Maine's hold—only to be held fast by Falco beside them.

"David made that decision on purpose!!" Falco shouted at her. "Our job now is to not get in his damn way!!"

"Maine! Head for this coordinate! I've got another vehicle prepped!!" Falco shouted in Maine's ear. "Move! As far from here as possible!!"

"Let go of me, bro!!" Rebecca thrashed on Pilar's back. "Let me go kill that mechanical jackass!!"

"Find somewhere safe!" Even Pilar wasn't in a joking mood anymore. As the team's cyberware medic, he understood how bad everyone's condition was. "We need to focus on treating everyone first!"

And back in the factory behind them, the sound of brutal combat continued to rage—David and Adam Smasher's battle wasn't over.

"Let's go… see you in the afterlife."
