Chapter 120 - The Giant Basilisk in the Black Lake

"I've looked at it, it's from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!" Porpentina said, looking at the envelope. "How strange, it's been so many years since you were expelled, and you're still getting letters from there!"

"From Hogwarts?! Let me see!" Newt's eyes lit up when he heard the letter was from his alma mater, and he trotted out from behind the door. He took the letter from his wife's hand, and as he looked at the Hogwarts crest on the wax seal, his mind couldn't help but drift to some past memories.

"I really miss my time studying there. It's a shame I never got to graduate."

"You brought it on yourself. It wasn't your fault back then; you were the one who chose to take the blame for someone else!" Porpentina rolled her eyes and said in an exasperated tone.

"I did it willingly. Leta was my friend, and back then…"

"Just see who it's from!" Porpentina immediately interrupted her husband when she saw that he was about to start chattering about the past again. It was really strange. Why had someone who used to be so socially awkward and quiet turned into a senile old man who loved to reminisce about the past?

Newt broke the wax seal, unfolded the letter, and began to read it carefully. A moment later, he slowly put the letter down and fell into deep thought.

"What is it? Who is it from?" Porpentina asked curiously when she saw his expression.

"The letter is from Professor Dumbledore. He said that two Basilisks suddenly appeared at Hogwarts, and the Care of Magical Creatures professor was petrified. So, he wants me to come to Hogwarts to serve as the Care of Magical Creatures professor for a while."

"Oh, then you should go!" Porpentina nodded without any emotion.

"Huh?!" Newt looked up in surprise. "You're letting me go?!"

When Newt first saw the contents of the letter, he was extremely excited on the inside, even though he didn't show it on the outside. Not only could he take this opportunity to return to his alma mater, but he could also study a Basilisk, a creature he had never seen in all his years as a magizoologist.

The reason he hadn't shown his excitement was because he was worried that his wife wouldn't let him go.

The truth was, he was old now and not as spry as he was when he was young. His wife was also worried that he would run off and get into trouble, and one day he might be digested by some magical creature, and she wouldn't even know where to go to find his body.

Porpentina looked at her husband's surprised face and immediately rolled her eyes again. "Would it matter if I didn't let you go?" she said. "A Basilisk! You've been complaining for years about never having encountered one. So even if I said no, you'd just sneak out anyway, wouldn't you?"

Newt immediately gave an awkward chuckle when he heard that. They had been married for decades, and they knew each other very well. He was indeed thinking about how to sneak out of the house and figuring that once he got to Hogwarts, his wife wouldn't be able to do anything about it. But he truly hadn't expected his wife to agree without a second thought this time.

In truth, Porpentina knew very well that her husband was someone who couldn't sit still. It was only after an accident a few years ago that she had to force him to stay at home.

A few years ago, Newt had gone to the Brazilian rainforest by himself to study fire slugs and was almost poisoned to death by a mutated Nundu. While Newt was old, his abilities were such that he shouldn't have had trouble with a Nundu. However, his hand was badly burned by the fire slug's mucus at the time, and he couldn't hold his wand steady, which is what led to the accident.

So ever since he came back from Brazil, Porpentina had strictly limited her husband's travels, so he wouldn't run off to some other place without her knowing, and she wouldn't even know where to find his body!

So, Newt had been cooped up for years, and Porpentina knew that his heart, which longed for the outdoors, couldn't be contained any longer!

So when Dumbledore's letter arrived, and she heard the word "Basilisk," she knew that there was no way she could stop her husband from going to Hogwarts.

Considering that the world's most powerful wizard, Albus Dumbledore, was there to keep watch, it wouldn't be as dangerous as the wilderness. In addition, her grandson was also studying there, so she agreed to let him go.

"I'll go help you pack a few things and get some gifts for Rolf." After agreeing to let her husband go to Hogwarts, Porpentina turned and walked into the room, beginning to pack for Newt, and at the same time, she instructed, "Be careful when you get to Hogwarts. Even with Dumbledore there, it's been hundreds of years since a Basilisk has appeared. No one knows if some unexpected accidents might happen."

Newt nodded vigorously. "Alright…"

.....

Meanwhile, at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

After lunch, the students were suddenly told to return to their dormitories because the school needed to handle a dangerous magical creature.

While the students were desperately peering out of their windows, curious to get some information, on the shore of the Black Lake, Victor was getting ready to dive in, and Dumbledore was standing by to prevent any accidents.

The members of Fairy Tail, having heard that there was a Basilisk in the Black Lake, also followed along to watch the commotion. Don't ask why they didn't have to return to their dormitories; it was because of their special privileges!

Draco, standing on the riverbank, looked at the calm surface of the Black Lake and muttered to himself, "No wonder it's been so quiet in the common room lately. The Merpeople and Grindylows in the Black Lake must have been eaten by the Basilisk!"

"What do you mean?" someone nearby heard Draco muttering to himself and asked curiously.

"The Slytherin common room is in the dungeon, and our windows overlook the Black Lake. Normally, some fish or magical creatures would bump against the windows, but they all seem to have disappeared recently."

"So that's what it is! But that's strange! The Basilisk got into the Black Lake, but the Merpeople didn't panic or ask for help; instead, they all went quiet. Why would that happen?"

"How should I…" Draco subconsciously turned his head to reply, but he suddenly realized that the person who had been talking to him was his arch-nemesis, and he instinctively shouted, "It's you, Potter?!"

"Why wouldn't it be me?"

"Were you trying to test my knowledge of magical creatures? I see. You can't beat me in a wizard's duel, so you're trying to win with this ridiculous method!"

"Shut up, Malfoy! Don't you remember who I blasted the trousers off of a few days ago?!"

"My trousers were just torn! You opportunistic git!"

"Draco Malfoy~"

"What did you say?"

"I called you Malfoy!!!"

With that, the two of them started bickering again, and the other Fairy Tail members were used to it. But Hermione, hearing the noise, immediately had a few veins pop up on her forehead and angrily bashed their heads together.

"Both of you, shut up! Go argue in the guild! If the Basilisk suddenly comes up, do you both want to go jump in its stomach acid together?!"

Hermione stood with her hands on her hips, glaring at the two of them, and Harry and Draco were so intimidated that they didn't dare to make a sound. The vice-master, top student, and a lover of violent methods; both of them agreed: she was not to be trifled with!

While Harry and Draco were having their "loving" reunion, Victor had already gone into the water and started searching for the Basilisk.

To be honest, with the thick algae and extremely poor visibility in the Black Lake, hunting a Basilisk here was quite a challenge. However, with the enhancement of Victor's [Eagle Eye] and [X-ray Vision] abilities, this limitation was not a problem for him! He quickly found the sleeping Basilisk at the bottom of the lake...

"Wow! This one is truly massive!" Victor stared in amazement at the huge body of the Basilisk in front of him. However, it looked a little different from the one in the guild.

It was about forty to forty-five meters long, and its body was covered in black scales. Its fangs were exposed, and a plume of colorful feathers on the top of its triangular head swayed in the current. Its tail, which looked like a fish's tail, was a gradient of grey and white.

At the same time, this Basilisk also had gills for breathing underwater, and a series of bubbles would float to the surface with every breath it took. The Basilisk also seemed to have a pair of retractable fins on both sides of its body at the chest area.

Victor observed the Basilisk's appearance, which was very different from the one in the guild. He even began to doubt if it was a Basilisk at all.

But now was not the time to study it. Victor slowly raised his hand, and a magic circle instantly appeared as he began to try and subdue the Basilisk…

On the other side, on the shore of the Black Lake, everyone had been waiting for more than ten minutes. Hermione paced back and forth, looking at the calm surface of the lake and saying, "Why is it taking so long?! Did something happen?"

"Don't worry, Hermione! Did you forget what happened last year when we ran into Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest?" Harry said with a relaxed expression, eating a piece of toast he had just roasted with his Dragon Slayer Magic.

He remembered the scene from last year in the Forbidden Forest when their Guild Master used magic to create a pool of magma. A Basilisk wouldn't be able to bathe in magma, would it?

"Look!"

Just then, Luna, who had been staring at the lake, suddenly pointed ahead and shouted. Everyone looked over and saw a lot of bubbles suddenly rising to the surface of the calm lake, followed by a surge of muddy water from the bottom, as if something was trying to burst out of the water.

Hiss, haaa!!!!!

The Basilisk burst out of the water with its bloody maw open and its huge fin-like wings trying to take flight.

"Holy shit!"
