The words hit like a lightning strike. Sylene froze, breath caught in his chest. A churn twisted in his gut, his heart pounding. That deep fear of being seen—truly seen—overtook him.

Grunhilda laughed, watching his stunned expression, and pushed a second helping toward him. Just then, Mavis rushed in, his face full of worry.
"Grandma, what did you say to my little brother? Remember—we're brothers now! Did you bully him too much? He needs warm chocolate, not scary stares!"
Mavis hugged Sylene tightly, rubbing his cheek affectionately against him. His concern was written all over his face. "There, there, I'm here. I knew that dish was too delicious—it's an apology, isn't it, Grandma?"
Hilda hmphed and started to pick out a portion for herself.
Sylene blinked, and slowly, the tight knot in his chest began to loosen. Mavis's hug warmed him, calmed him.
