Chapter 29 - The System's New Layers

The humid night air of Dasmariñas felt cool against Tristan's warm skin as he walked down the quiet street toward his home. He had just left Mang Crispo's eatery, where he had spent the last hour with his teammates.

The rest of the Black Mambas had been in high spirits. Marco had kept his promise and paid for three big, sizzling metal plates of pork sisig, along with two large bottles of cold cola. Gab, Joseph, and Felix had devoured the food like wild wolves, laughing loudly as they re-enacted every single play from their clutch victory against the Red Foxes. John had even drawn a funny diagram on a paper napkin to show how Felix had bounced the ball between his legs during their game-winning play, 'Viper's Strike.'

Tristan had eaten his share of the delicious food and laughed along with his brothers, but his mind had been partially somewhere else. While the rest of the team was still celebrating their narrow 65-64 victory, Tristan could not stop thinking about the game he had watched right after.

He could still see Aiden Robinson in his mind.

He remembered the smooth, effortless way Aiden dribbled past defenders, the high arc of his three-point jump shots, and the cold, dominant confidence in his eyes. Aiden had scored 34 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and dished out 7 assists, leading the Grey Wolves to an overwhelming 63-45 victory over the Yellow Canaries. Aiden had made high-level basketball look like a simple walk in the park.

Tristan looked down at his worn-out basketball shoes as they hit the concrete pavement. His knees were stiff, his shoulder still throbbed from where June had hit him in mid-air, and his feet felt as heavy as blocks of cement. Winning one single game against the Red Foxes had taken every drop of sweat and energy his team possessed. Yet, Aiden had destroyed an entire team without even breaking a sweat.

"I have a long way to go," Tristan whispered softly to himself, his breath visible in the dim yellow light of a nearby streetlight. A blue tricycle zoomed past him, its small engine rattling noisy in the quiet neighborhood, but Tristan barely noticed.

Instead of feeling defeated, however, a new kind of quiet purpose burned deep inside his chest. He was no longer just a boy who played street basketball to pass the time. He was a floor general. He had a team that believed in him, a league to win, and a formidable rival he needed to surpass.

After walking for fifteen minutes down the familiar, narrow roads of Barangay Burol II, Tristan finally arrived at his small, modest house. A soft, warm yellow light spilled out from the front window, welcoming him home like a gentle embrace.

Tristan opened the creaky metal front gate and stepped onto the small porch. As soon as he unlocked the wooden door and stepped inside, the rich, mouth-watering aroma of his mother's home-cooked chicken adobo filled his nose, instantly making his stomach rumble.

His parents, Armando and Linda Herrera, were sitting at the small wooden dining table in the kitchen area. His father, Armando, was resting his rough, tired hands on the table after a long, exhausting day of work. His mother, Linda, was wiping down the kitchen counter with a clean cloth.

"Son, you're finally home!" Linda said, setting the cloth down and giving him a warm, gentle smile. "We were starting to get worried. Come, sit down. Dinner is still warm on the stove."

Armando looked up, his tired eyes lighting up with genuine pride when he saw his son carrying his heavy gym bag. "How was the game, Tristan? Did your team play well today?"

Tristan set his bag down near the door and walked over to the table, a bright, genuine smile spreading across his face despite his intense physical exhaustion.

"We won, Pa," Tristan said, taking a seat at the table. "It was our very first official game in the Intercolor league, and we beat the Red Foxes, sixty-five to sixty-four."

Linda gasped softly, bringing her hands to her cheeks, while Armando slammed his palm lightly on the table with a broad grin.

"Sixty-five to sixty-four?" Armando exclaimed, his deep voice full of excitement. "That sounds like a complete nail-biter! Tell us what happened!"

As his mother placed a plate of hot rice and savory chicken adobo in front of him, Tristan began to tell his parents the story of the game. He described how June, the Red Foxes' giant center, had dominated the paint with heavy dunks. He told them about how his team had fallen behind in the fourth quarter, how they called a time-out to draw up 'Viper's Strike,' and how he had drawn a hard foul under the basket to tie the game before hitting the game-winning free throw with only four seconds left.

His parents listened intently to every single word, their faces filled with pure love and fascination. They had not been able to attend the game at the gymnasium because of Armando's long work hours and Linda's laundry business, but their unwavering love and support were a constant, reassuring anchor in Tristan's life.

Tristan deliberately omitted any mention of Aiden Robinson, the Grey Wolves, or the cold wave of self-doubt that had washed over him earlier in the bleachers. He did not want his parents to worry about his internal struggles. That was a personal battle he had to fight and overcome on his own.

"I am so proud of you, Tristan," Linda said softly, patting his head gently as he finished his plate of food. "You worked so hard practicing on that hot street court every afternoon. Seeing your hard work pay off is the greatest blessing for your father and me."

"Your mother is right," Armando agreed, nodding firmly. "Just stay humble, keep working hard, and always take care of your teammates. A good captain always puts his brothers first."

"I will, Pa. I promise," Tristan replied warmly.

After finishing his meal, Tristan stood up and cleared the dinner table. He carried the dirty dishes to the kitchen sink, turned on the faucet, and began scrubbing the plates with a soapy sponge. The cool water running over his warm hands helped calm his racing thoughts, grounding him after an emotional, action-packed afternoon.

Once the dishes were washed, dried, and stacked neatly in the cupboard, Tristan said a quiet goodnight to his parents and walked down the short hallway to his small bedroom.

Tristan closed the bedroom door behind him, shutting out the rest of the world. He turned on the small desk lamp, casting a soft, golden glow across his small wooden bed, his school textbooks, and an old, slightly deflated basketball resting in the corner of the room.

He took off his sweat-stained jersey, changed into a comfortable cotton t-shirt and loose shorts, and sat cross-legged on his bed.

His body was exhausted, but his mind was buzzing with anticipation. He took a deep breath, centered his thoughts, and issued a silent command in his mind.

System, open.

Instantly, the familiar, translucent blue holographic window materialized in the air directly in front of his eyes. The soft glow illuminated his face in the dark room.

A bold notification text flashed at the very top of the screen:

[Mission 4: First Win — COMPLETE!]

[Objective: Win your first official game in the Intercolor Basketball League.]

[Status: Successful (Black Mambas 65 - 64 Red Foxes)]

[Claiming Rewards...]

[Reward Received: 30 Physical Points]

[Reward Received: 1x Bronze Skill Badge]

A sudden wave of deep triumph and satisfaction washed over Tristan's entire body. He had actually done it! He had completed the system's hard mission and earned his rewards through pure effort on the hardwood court.

His eyes locked onto the reward text. Thirty physical points was a massive amount of attributes, far more than he had ever received from daily training quests. Furthermore, he had earned his very first Bronze Skill Badge, a completely new item type that he had never seen before inside the system interface.

"Thirty physical points..." Tristan whispered, his eyes wide with excitement. "And a new skill badge!"

He focused his mind on the screen to open his character profile, curious to see how he could apply his new rewards.

As soon as he interacted with the menu, the blue holographic screen flickered softly. The simple, basic layout he was used to seeing suddenly transformed. The interface expanded outward, revealing a much deeper, more detailed layer of complex statistics.

The system had upgraded its layout! It was no longer just showing basic, general numbers like Speed or Strength. It had evolved into a fully detailed, comprehensive breakdown of every single aspect of his basketball ability, looking just like an advanced analytical scout sheet for professional players.

Tristan leaned forward, scanning the intricate new user interface:

[EQUIPPED SKILLS]

Bronze Skill Badge: Floor General (Level 1)

Tristan stared at the detailed screen in complete awe. The blue light reflected brightly in his dark eyes. The system was showing him a complete, honest map of his current basketball identity.

Looking at the numbers, he could clearly see where his true strengths lay. His Playmaking section was by far his highest category. His Pass Accuracy (45) and Ball Handle (42) reflected all the long hours he had spent practicing dribbling drills around plastic cones on the rough street courts of Burol II. His Free Throw (40) was also high, which explained why he had felt so calm and confident when he stepped up to score the game-winning point against the Red Foxes.

However, the new interface also exposed his most glaring, embarrassing weaknesses.

His Driving Dunk (11) and Standing Dunk (5) were rock-bottom low, proving that he could barely touch the net, let alone slam a ball through the iron rim like June or Aiden. His Post Control (18) was almost non-existent, and his Interior Defense (15) showed that he was practically helpless when defending big, strong players under the basket.

"This is amazing..." Tristan muttered softly, studying the screen. "It shows me exactly what I need to work on. It's a complete map of my entire game."

Eager to make himself a better player right away, Tristan focused his thoughts on his Ball Handle (42) attribute inside the Playmaking category. He wanted to use his newly earned 30 Physical Points to boost his ball handling higher, hoping to make his dribble moves as fast and unstealable as Jason's or Aiden's.

He selected the Ball Handle attribute and attempted to allocate ten points into it.

Instantly, a bright red warning window popped up in the center of the screen, flashing with an ominous, low buzzing sound inside his mind:

[INCOMPATIBLE POINTS!]

[Warning: Physical Points cannot be applied to Technical Skill Attributes.]

[Notice: You can only use Attribute Points to upgrade skills in Finishing, Shooting, Playmaking, and Defense categories.]

[Please earn Attribute Points through official system missions to upgrade these stats.]

Tristan blinked in surprise, the excitement in his chest instantly freezing.

"Wait, what?" Tristan said aloud, reading the red text carefully. "Physical Points can't upgrade my dribbling or shooting?"

He read the warning message three times until he fully understood the system's strict new rule. The system had created a clear, rigid distinction between two different types of upgrade points:

Physical Points: Used strictly to upgrade his body's raw athleticism things like Speed, Acceleration, Strength, Vertical jump, Stamina, and Agility.

Attribute Points: A rare, special currency used to upgrade technical basketball skills such as Shooting, Finishing, Dribbling, Passing, and Defense.

Tristan sank back against his pillow, letting out a long breath. "So Physical Points only build my physical body, while Attribute Points build my basketball skills. That makes sense... I can't just buy a better jump shot using raw leg muscle."

Just as he was wondering how he would ever earn those rare Attribute Points, the blue holographic screen flickered again. The red warning window dissolved, replaced by a massive, golden mission notification that expanded across the entire center of his view:

[NEW MAIN MISSION GENERATED!]

[Mission 5: Qualify for the Next Round]

Objective: Lead the Black Mambas to win at least two (2) more games in the Intercolor Basketball League group stage to qualify for the playoff round.

Current Progress: 0 / 2 Wins

Penalty for Failure: SYSTEM DELETION & PERMANENT RESET OF USER STATS.

Rewards upon Completion:

+40 Physical Points

+20 Attribute Points

+1x Bronze Skill Badge Choice Chest

Tristan's breath caught in his throat as he read the high stakes of Mission 5.

The penalty for failure was absolute: System Deletion. If they failed to win two more games in the tournament, the system would vanish forever, leaving him back at square one as an average, weak street player.

However, when Tristan looked at the rewards, his heart hammered against his ribs in pure excitement. 20 Attribute Points! That was the exact currency he needed to upgrade his technical skills! With 20 Attribute Points, he could raise his shooting, passing, or dribbling to a whole new tier.

"Win two more games..." Tristan said, his jaw tightening with fierce resolve. "We have to do it. No matter what teams we face next, we are going to win."

He clicked his mental mind to accept Mission 5. The golden window shrank down and stored itself neatly into his active quest log.

Now, Tristan returned his attention back to his 30 Physical Points. Since he could only spend them on his physical body attributes, he decided to carefully plan how to distribute them to maximize his performance on the court.

He pulled up his current PHYSICAL attributes again:

Speed: 29

Acceleration: 23

Strength: 15

Vertical: 15

Stamina: 24

Agility: 24

Tristan analyzed his physical profile like a professional trainer.

Against fast guards like Jason, his current Speed (29) and Agility (24) were barely enough to keep up. When June hit him under the basket during that final play, Tristan's weak Strength (15) had almost caused him to miss the layup entirely. Furthermore, his low Stamina (24) had left him gasping for air by the middle of the fourth quarter. If he wanted to play forty full minutes of intense basketball without getting tired or pushed around, he needed to build a faster, stronger, and more durable athletic frame.

"Alright," Tristan thought, calculating the numbers carefully in his head. "Let's distribute the thirty points wisely."

He decided on a clear, balanced upgrade plan:

Speed: Add +6 points (29 -> 35) — To outrun opposition guards on fast breaks.

Acceleration: Add +2 points (23 -> 25) — To blow past defenders with a fast first step.

Stamina: Add +6 points (24 -> 30) — To play intense defense without getting exhausted.

Agility: Add +6 points (24 -> 30) — To change directions quickly on defense and offense.

Strength: Add +5 points (15 -> 20) — To absorb physical contact when driving into the paint.

Vertical: Add +5 points (15 -> 20) — To get higher rebounds and contest jump shots better.

(6 + 2 + 6 + 6 + 5 + 5 = 30 Physical Points Total)

With a firm silent command, Tristan confirmed his selection.

Apply physical point allocation.

The moment he confirmed the command, a strange, incredible sensation swept through Tristan's entire physical body.

A sudden wave of deep, pleasant warmth spread from his heart, flowing rapidly through his bloodstream into every muscle, joint, and bone. His legs felt a strange, tingling surge of energy, as if his muscle fibers were tightening, repairing, and growing stronger in real-time. The dull ache in his shoulder vanished completely, replaced by a feeling of light, effortless power.

Tristan flexed his fingers and raised his arms. His muscles felt tighter, denser, and far more responsive. He felt lighter, as if the heavy weight of physical fatigue had been completely stripped away from his body.

He looked at the updated numbers glowing on the blue screen:

Speed: 35 (+6)

Acceleration: 25 (+2)

Strength: 20 (+5)

Vertical: 20 (+5)

Stamina: 30 (+6)

Agility: 30 (+6)

A deep, satisfied smile spread across Tristan's face. He was no longer just a small, agile kid who got pushed around easily. He was now significantly faster, stronger, and more athletic than he had ever been in his entire life.

Next, Tristan turned his attention to the second major reward he had claimed from Mission 4: the Bronze Skill Badge.

He clicked on his inventory icon, and a glowing brass chest appeared on the interface.

[Opening Bronze Skill Badge Reward...]

[System Skill Unlocked: ACROBAT (Bronze - Level 1)]

A detailed information box popped up, explaining the newly acquired skill:

[SKILL BADGE: ACROBAT]

Tier: Bronze (Level 1)

Description: Highly enhances the player's ability to execute complex, difficult finishing moves around the basket.

Effects:

Increases the success rate of reverse layups, double-pump fakes, and floating tear-drops by +10%.

Reduces the negative accuracy penalty caused by heavy physical mid-air contact from defenders by +15%.

Unlocks smoother, faster gather-step when driving into a crowded paint.

Tristan's eyes glowed with pure excitement as he read the description of the Acrobat badge.

This skill was an absolute dream for a point guard like him! Because Tristan was smaller than giant centers like June or Cedrick Estrella, driving into the lane usually meant facing massive, towering arms trying to block his shots. With the Acrobat skill equipped, he could now twist his body in mid-air, adjust his release point around giant hands, and finish tough, double-pump layups off the glass with far greater accuracy!

"This is exactly what I needed," Tristan said happily, clicking his mind to immediately equip the new badge into his second open skill slot.

As soon as the Acrobat badge was equipped, another subtle notification text popped up right beneath it in his skills menu:

[SKILL BADGE UPDATED!]

[Floor General (Level 1) ---> Floor General (Level 2!)]

Tristan paused in surprise. "Wait, Floor General leveled up? But I didn't spend any points on it!"

He clicked on the Floor General badge to read the update log:

[Notice: Skill Badges naturally gain Experience Points (EXP) when used effectively during official matches.]

[Log: You successfully directed team strategy, organized 'Viper's Strike,' and maintained team morale during crucial fourth-quarter moments against the Red Foxes.]

[Floor General EXP: 100/100 — LEVEL UP!]

[Floor General (Level 2) Effects:]

Slightly boosts all teammates' passing accuracy and positioning awareness by +5% whenever you are holding the ball at the point guard position.

Gives the user a clearer, faster mental prediction of opponent defensive rotations.

Tristan smiled warmly, feeling a deep sense of pride in his heart. The system was rewarding him not just for grinding daily training exercises, but for actually being a true, unselfish captain on the floor. The more he trusted his teammates and led them wisely, the stronger his Floor General skill would become.

He scrolled further down the skill information page and discovered another interesting note about badge progression:

[System Rule: A Bronze Skill Badge will automatically evolve into a SILVER Skill Badge once it reaches Level 10 through match experience and skill mastery.]

"Silver rank at Level 10..." Tristan noted in his mind. "That means my skills can keep evolving as long as I keep playing hard and learning from every single game."

Tristan took a step back mentally and refreshed his entire user profile to view his updated, completed status sheet one last time:

[EQUIPPED SKILLS]

Bronze Skill Badge: Floor General (Level 2)

Bronze Skill Badge: Acrobat (Level 1)

Tristan stared at his updated profile sheet for a long, quiet moment.

Compared to the weak, quiet kid who could barely dribble three times without losing control of the ball a few weeks ago, he had transformed into a completely different player. He was faster, stronger, smarter, and equipped with powerful skills that made him a true threat on the basketball court.

He had a clear mission ahead of him: win two more games in the Intercolor league to qualify for the playoffs and protect his system from deletion. He had a team of loyal brothers who relied on his leadership. And somewhere down the road, waiting for him in the playoff rounds, was Aiden Vance and the Grey Wolves.

The mountain ahead of him was steep, high, and dangerous. But for the very first time in his life, Tristan did not feel afraid of the climb. He was eager for it.

"System, turn off," Tristan commanded quietly.

The blue holographic light dissolved into tiny, sparkling particles before vanishing completely into the darkness of the room.

Tristan lay back on his bed, pulling his soft blanket over his shoulders. He rested his head on his pillow and turned off his small desk lamp. The room fell into a quiet, peaceful darkness, save for the soft moonlight filtering through his window.

As he closed his eyes, his mind played back images of basketballs swishing through white nets, his friends laughing over plates of hot sisig at Mang Crispo's, and the sharp, bright lights of the gymnasium ceiling.

His heart was steady, calm, and filled with an unshakeable, burning determination.

He was a Black Mamba. And starting tomorrow morning when the sun rose over Dasmariñas, he was going to work harder than ever before.

With a peaceful smile on his face, Tristan fell into a deep, restful sleep, dreaming of fast breaks, sharp passes, and the sweet, glorious sound of victory.
