The long, harsh ring of the final buzzer from the previous game rang across the crowded court, slowly fading into the warm afternoon air. A thick, excited silence fell over the covered court of Barangay Burol II.
The air inside the venue was heavy with the mixed smells of freshly cooked popcorn, hot sweat, fried snacks, and dusty concrete. The large crowd, still buzzing with high energy from the Blue Whales' dominant victory over the Red Foxes, began settling back down onto the wooden and concrete bleachers. Everyone shifted their attention toward the middle of the floor, where two teams in clean uniforms were walking out to begin their warm-up drills.
On the player bench near the scorer's table, the ten players of the Black Mambas sat together as a quiet, focused unit. Dressed in their sleek black jerseys with white numbers, they looked like shadows ready to pounce. They weren't just staring at the court; they were carefully studying every inch of the floorboards, replaying the previous game in their minds, checking the lighting, and talking quietly about their strategy.
Tristan sat on the edge of the bench, lacing his red basketball sneakers extra tight. His heart was beating with a steady, heavy rhythm against his ribs, a mix of nervous energy and cold, sharp determination.
This game was completely different from their casual neighborhood scrimmages. This wasn't just about playing hard or having fun with friends; it was about survival.
Tristan took a deep breath and called up his mental status display one last time:

Current Mission: Mission 5 — Qualify for the Next Round (Win at least 2 games in the league stage or face System Deletion).
Tristan stared at the glowing red words System Deletion hovering in his vision before dismissing the screen.
If they lost today against the White Sharks, their tournament record would drop to one win and one loss, putting them in serious danger of getting eliminated from the intercolor league. Losing meant his Basketball System would be erased forever, destroying his dream of becoming a great point guard.
Furthermore, sitting high up in the middle row of the concrete bleachers was Coach Gutierrez, the legendary head coach of Dasmariñas National High School. The coach was holding a black clipboard and a pen, watching the Black Mambas with sharp, observant eyes.
If they played with heart today and passed their fourth periodical exams in March, all ten of them would earn a spot at the official high school varsity tryouts. And on top of all that, Tristan knew he had to keep his promise to Christine for their Sunday afternoon study group near the town library.
Tristan stood up and stretched his arms. He had watched Diego Paterno dominate the court just minutes ago. Now, it was their turn to show what the Black Mambas could do.
Suddenly, a loud, electric voice boomed through the giant black speakers beside the scorer's table, shaking the venue back to life.
"Alright, basketball fans of Dasmariñas! Let's keep that loud energy going!" the court announcer shouted into his microphone. "Give it up for our next two competing teams in today's double-header! On the left side of the floor, representing a brand new style of fast streetball play and fierce team chemistry... give a massive welcome to the BLAACCKKK MAMBAAAAS!"
A surprisingly loud roar erupted from the far side of the bleachers. A dedicated section of friends, family members, classmates, and neighbors from their barangay had come out to support them.
Hearing the crowd shout their team name brought a confident, sharp smile to Tristan's face. He stood up straight, pulled off his warm-up shirt, and stepped toward the court line. In a single, unified motion, his nine teammates stood up with him, removing their shirts to reveal their dark jerseys. They walked onto the court together, not with cocky arrogance, but with the quiet, dangerous intensity of a real family that trusted each other completely.
"And their opponents on the right side of the floor," the announcer continued, his voice booming across the metal roof overhead, "a powerhouse team known for their relentless interior offense, heavy rebounds, and fierce physical play! Put your hands together for the WHIIITE SHAAAARKS!"
The crowd clapped loudly as the White Sharks walked onto the floorboards in their bright blue-and-white uniforms. Leading their group was their star player, Cedrick Estrella, wearing jersey number ten. Cedrick was broad-shouldered, tall, and walked with a calm, dangerous confidence that commanded immediate attention.
Tristan gathered his starting five players into a tight circle near the half-court line. The line-up for the opening quarter was set: Tristan at point guard, Marco at shooting guard, Kyle on the wing at small forward, Gab at power forward, and Felix taking the center position under the rim.
"Alright, Mambas, listen up," Tristan said, keeping his voice low, firm, and steady so it cut directly through the noise of the gym. "The White Sharks run almost all of their plays through Cedrick Estrella. He likes to catch the ball near the free-throw line elbow or in the low post. Gab, you're starting on him defensively. Frustrate him, push him off his sweet spots, but do not get into early foul trouble."
Gab nodded firmly, his face turning completely serious. "Got it, Tris. I'll stay low and keep my hands up."
"Felix," Tristan turned to their tall center, "their starting big man is broad and strong, but he's slow when turning on defense. We need to use our speed to exploit that gap. Everybody else, stay active on help defense, communicate on every screen, and push the pace whenever we grab a rebound. Play our style of basketball. Smart, fast, and together."
"Let's go eat!" Marco added with a wide grin, bouncing on the balls of his feet as his eyes sparkled with hunger for the game.
"MAMBAS ON THREE!" Tristan called out, holding his hand in the center.
"ONE! TWO! THREE! MAMBAS!" all five players shouted together, slapping their hands down in a unified clap that echoed across the floor.
The two teams walked to their assigned positions on the court. Across from Felix stood the White Sharks' center, a hulking, broad player with the number forty-four stretched tight across his back. He glared down at Felix, trying to intimidate the younger center before the game even started.
Felix simply looked back at him with a cool, unbothered smirk, adjusting his wristband. "Ready for a long, tiring day, big guy?"
The hulking center just grunted angrily, taking his stance at the center circle.
The referee stepped into the middle of the center court circle, holding the orange leather basketball in his right hand. He looked at both centers, raised his silver whistle to his lips, and blew a sharp, piercing shriek that instantly cut through all the noise in the building.
The referee tossed the basketball high into the air, straight up toward the metal roof rafters. The ball reached its highest point, hanging in the bright afternoon air for a split second.
Both centers exploded upward off the concrete floor!
The White Sharks' center jumped with raw power, but Felix used superior timing and quick reflexes. Reaching his long arm out, Felix slapped his hand against the leather ball a fraction of a second earlier.
TAP!
The ball flew backward in a clean arc, falling perfectly into Tristan's open hands near the top of the key.
The game was officially underway!
The second the leather ball touched Tristan's fingertips, the loud noise of the crowd seemed to quiet down in his mind. His racing pulse instantly settled into a cool, metronomic beat.
Suddenly, his mental Floor General ability activated!
The basketball court transformed in Tristan's perception. It was no longer just concrete, white lines, and opponents; it looked like a clear, tactical chessboard of moving probabilities. Glowing green lines appeared in his vision, showing him the fastest passing lanes, while soft red zones highlighted the defensive weaknesses of the White Sharks. He could see his teammates moving as clear vectors of potential, their speed and spacing completely visible to his mind. He was no longer just a high school student playing a game; he was the master strategist guiding a fast attack.
"Screen left, Tris!" Marco yelled out, already sprinting across the floor without the ball.
Tristan didn't even need the verbal call; his Floor General vision had already spotted the opening two steps ahead.
Tristan executed a sharp, hard dribble to his right with his right hand, staying low to the floor. His sudden burst of motion pulled his primary defender along with him, while also attracting the eyes of Marco's defender. Felix stepped up from the key to set a solid, unmoving wall of a screen on the left side.
However, Felix's screen was actually a clever decoy!
While looking hard to his right to trick the White Sharks' defense, Tristan used his Agility of 30 to snap a lightning-fast, one-handed bounce pass behind his back to the right corner of the court!
BOUNCE!
The ball zipped cleanly between two defenders and landed perfectly in Marco's waiting hands. Marco had timed his baseline cut to perfection. Catching the ball right in his shooting pocket, Marco planted his feet behind the three-point line, rose smoothly into the air, and released his jump shot with textbook form.
The basketball arced high through the bright air of the gym, spinning cleanly before falling straight down through the cotton net.
SWISH!
"THREE-POINTER! NUMBER EIGHT, MARCO!" the court announcer shouted into his microphone.
3-0, Black Mambas!
"YEAH! GREAT PASS, TRIS!" Marco yelled, sprinting back on defense while pointing his finger directly at Tristan.
The White Sharks were completely unfazed by the quick basket. They were a veteran tournament team, calm and disciplined. Their baseline player grabbed the ball immediately after it fell through the net and threw an inbound pass to their point guard.
The Sharks' point guard brought the ball up the court at a steady, controlled pace. He raised his left hand, calling out a structured set play, before snapping a crisp chest pass directly to Cedrick Estrella at the right elbow.
Cedrick caught the ball near the free-throw line. He moved with a dangerous, fluid rhythm, appearing totally relaxed on the outside, yet ready to explode at any millisecond.
Gab immediately stepped up to guard him, lowering his stance, spreading his feet wide, and keeping one hand high to contest any shot.
Cedrick didn't try to force a wild drive past Gab's chest. Instead, using remarkable efficiency of movement, Cedrick took one hard dribble toward the baseline, turned his broad back against Gab's body, and executed a incredibly smooth, high-arching post hook shot right over Gab's outstretched fingers.
The ball hit the upper square of the glass backboard with a soft touch and dropped cleanly through the net.
3-2, Black Mambas.
Gab let out a quiet, frustrated sigh, slapping his own chest as he ran back up the floor. "My bad, guys. I gave him too much space on his right shoulder."
"All good, Gab! Don't worry about it! Let's get those points right back!" Tristan called out loudly, clapping his hands together to keep the team's energy high.
The opening quarter quickly turned into a fast, physical, and exciting battle of strategy and skill.
Cedrick Estrella showed everyone in the gym exactly why he was considered a top-tier player in the town. He scored from mid-range with pull-up jump shots, threw sharp passes to cutters inside the key whenever the defense crowded him, and organized the White Sharks' team defense with vocal leadership.
However, the Black Mambas refused to give an inch of ground. They answered every challenge with relentless effort, tight perimeter defense, and quick transition passing. Guided by Tristan's Floor General vision and upgraded Speed of 35, the Mambas executed plays they had never been able to pull off earlier in the season.
With three minutes left in the first quarter, the game was tied at 8-8.
Tristan dribbled the ball across half-court, keeping his eyes up as he scanned the defense. He noticed that Kyle's defender was cheating two steps deep into the painted key, assuming Tristan was going to drive toward the basket.
Recognizing the mistake instantly, Tristan executed a sharp jab step with his right foot toward the key. The sudden threat of his Speed 35 made the entire White Sharks interior defense collapse inward for a split second to protect the rim.
That tiny split second was all Tristan needed.
Without looking, Tristan whipped a hard, two-handed skip pass across the court directly to Kyle, who was standing completely open on the left wing.
"CASH!" Kyle yelled out with confidence as his fingers caught the ball. He set his feet quickly and launched a smooth mid-range jump shot.
SWISH!
10-8, Black Mambas!
On the White Sharks' very next offensive possession, they tried to go right back to their star player. Their point guard picked up his dribble near the wing and attempted to force a bounce pass down to Cedrick in the low post.
However, Gab had been studying Cedrick's entry passes all quarter. Anticipating the play perfectly, Gab read the guard's eyes, exploded forward, and shot his right hand out into the passing lane like a striking snake!
SMACK!
"STEAL BY GAB!" the announcer screamed into the microphone.
Gab snatched the loose ball off the floorboards and immediately turned up the court, triggering a fast break! Two White Sharks defenders sprinted back to protect the rim, closing in on Gab as he crossed the half-court line.
Instead of forcing a difficult, contested layup against two taller defenders, Gab executed a perfect, hard bounce pass ahead to a streaking Tristan!
Tristan caught the ball mid-stride at full speed, the thundering sound of his shoes echoing across the floor. Only one defender remained between him and the basket, the broad-shouldered center wearing jersey forty-four.
The heavy center planted his feet near the middle of the painted area, spreading his broad arms wide to block the shot.
Tristan didn't slow down. As he reached the free-throw line, he executed a sharp, sudden head-fake toward Marco on his right wing. The heavy center bit on the fake, leaning his weight to the right for a fraction of a second.
That tiny mistake was all Tristan needed!
Tristan immediately activated his Acrobat badge! Shifting the ball smoothly from his right hand to his left hand mid-air, Tristan glided right past the big man's outstretched arm. Rising effortlessly toward the rim, he laid the ball up softly off the white glass backboard.
The basketball hit the glass, swirled around the inner metal ring once, and dropped cleanly through the net!
12-8, Black Mambas!
The small section of Black Mambas fans on the bleachers erupted into loud cheers, stomping their feet on the concrete stands! The five players on the floor sprinted back on defense, high-fiving each other with huge grins on their faces. They were officially on a fast 4-0 scoring run!
Seeing his team lose control of the game's momentum, the White Sharks' coach stood up near the bench, raised his hands toward the scorer's table, and called for an official timeout.
TRRRRIIILLLL!
The referee blew his whistle, signaling the thirty-second timeout.
Both teams walked back toward their respective benches. The five Black Mambas players were breathing heavily, their faces covered in sweat, but their eyes were shining with intense excitement.
Tristan sat down on the wooden folding chair while Marco handed out cold water bottles and towels to everyone.
"Incredible fast break, Tris!" Felix said, wiping sweat from his forehead with a small towel. "That mid-air finish was slick!"
"Great steal, Gab!" Tristan said, taking a sip of water before looking up at his team. "Listen, everyone. We have the momentum right now, but Cedrick Estrella isn't going to back down. He's too smart. Next time he catches the ball below the free-throw line, we are changing our defensive coverage."
Tristan looked directly at Felix and Gab. "Felix, as soon as Cedrick turns his back to post up Gab below the elbow, I want you to leave your man and come over to double-team him immediately. Trap him near the baseline. Force him to give up the basketball and pass it out to their weak shooters on the perimeter. We make their role players beat us today, not Cedrick."
Gab and Felix nodded their heads in total agreement, their minds locking into the new defensive strategy.
"And on offense," Tristan added, looking at Marco and Kyle, "keep moving without the ball. Their big men are getting tired from running back on defense. If we keep pushing the pace, we can break this game open in the second quarter!"
TRRRRIIILLLL!
The referee blew his whistle, calling both teams back onto the floorboards for the final two minutes of the first quarter.
When play resumed, the Black Mambas executed their new defensive double-team strategy to perfection.
When Cedrick Estrella caught the ball in the low post on the very next play, Gab held his ground firmly while Felix instantly sprinted over to help, trapping Cedrick in a tight corner with four outstretched arms!
Surprised by the sudden double-team, Cedrick tried to jump and throw a panic pass out to the wing. But his pass was tipped by Felix's fingers, bounces wildly off a defender's shoe, and rolled out of bounds for a White Sharks turnover!
"TURNOVER! BLACK MAMBAS BALL!" the referee signaled sharply.
Capitalizing on the defensive stop, Tristan brought the ball up the court with total composure. He ran a smooth pick-and-roll play with Felix at the top of the key, drew two defenders toward his drive, and delivered a slick, crisp bounce pass to Marco, who cut baseline for an easy reverse layup just before the horn sounded!
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT!
The loud, sharp sound of the electric horn signaled the end of the first quarter.
The scoreboard mounted on the gym wall glowed brightly under the venue's lights:
BLACK MAMBAS: 17
WHITE SHARKS: 12
The ten Black Mambas walked back to their bench side-by-side, their chests heaving with deep breaths, their black jerseys soaked with sweat.
Tristan grabbed his water bottle and took a long, refreshing drink. He glanced up toward the middle row of the concrete bleachers. Coach Gutierrez was sitting quietly in his seat, nodding his head slowly as he made a quick note in his black clipboard.
They had won the first quarter battle, but Tristan knew very well that the war was far from over. The White Sharks were a veteran squad, and Cedrick Estrella would certainly adjust his game in the second quarter.
Tristan looked around at his teammates, Marco, Gab, Felix, Kyle, John, Mark, Joshua, Ian, and Joseph. Every single one of them was smiling, focused, and ready to fight for every possession.
They were no longer just an inexperienced street team trying to survive. They were a real team, a family of brothers, and they were here to win.
Tristan wiped the sweat from his eyes, adjusted his jersey, and prepared to step back onto the court for the second quarter. The storm was just getting started.
