Chapter 8 Brutal Battle
Barne and Brook endured the stench and ate the two devil fruits. The others immediately gathered around them, observing them carefully, hoping to find any difference between them and before.
However, they were disappointed. Barne and Brook hadn't changed at all. Barne was fine. A cut on his hand healed at a visible speed, but Brook was not.
People were laughing at him for eating a useless fruit. Only Barne knew the power of the Yomiuri Fruit, which could only be used after death. They couldn't just tell Brook to die now.
Barne was still fishing, but even though he had been fishing every day since he got on the boat, he still hadn't caught a single fish. The bait he used was only liked by Fitz, and the fish wouldn't bite.
Barn was now sitting cross-legged, one hand on his fishing rod, the other resting his head on his. He closed his eyes, feeling the breeze and the scent of the sea. He sat at the stern, sleeping...
Fitz, having finished his bait, dozed off on Barn's head...
Aboard a pirate ship in the distance, a man dressed in captain's attire was peering through binoculars at the Rumbar Pirates' ship.
"Hey, hey, hey, found it!" the man smiled, revealing four golden teeth. He pulled an orange from his pocket and took a bite without even peeling it.
"Guys! Wake up! Our little lamb's here! Yo-ho-ho!"
"Ha-ha!"
Barn, sound asleep, was unaware they were being watched. Only Fitz, alert, woke up and chirped a few times.
"Captain! We're catching up!" a pirate called to Gangplank.
Gangplank took another bite of the unpeeled orange, stepped onto the bow, and shouted.
"York! My old friend, I heard you found a lot of treasure. You know, that's what I, Gangplank, love the most. So, give me those little treasures and I'll let you go, how's that? Haha!" "
Haha!" The other pirates on the ship all had a thief-like gleam in their eyes, even though they were thieves to begin with. They laughed heartily.
Meanwhile, York was gathering the crew.
"Guys! Get ready to work. Gangplank is no scumbag. The name 'Disaster of the Sea' still holds some weight."
"What are you afraid of? Watch me kick their asses!" Bron said, patting his chest.
"Haha!" The other crew members on the ship burst into laughter.
"I want to go too!" Barn, holding the Second Generation Wakatsuki, stepped out of the crowd and stood before York, speaking seriously. Fitz, who was standing above him, nodded seriously.
"Don't be ridiculous, Barn. Your tiny body isn't even strong enough for a single blow!" Sarco turned and smiled at Barn.
Barn shouted again, "Why? I'm a member of the Rumbar Pirates too! I want to fight too! And I'm strong!" He flexed his muscles, and Fitz nodded again.
The people on the boat laughed again. Brook squatted down and said to Barn, "Alright! Barn, just sit back in the cabin and wait for us to come back."
"Why?" Barn insisted.
"Stop talking, Barn. Just stay in the cabin and wait for your brother Sarco to come back tonight. He'll grill you some fish! I caught it myself! Haha!"
With that, he grabbed his knife and went on deck with the other crew members.
Soon, the sound of weapons clashing could be heard from outside.
Barn, clutching his knife, sat in the corner of the cabin, listening to the clash of weapons and the shouts of the pirates from the deck outside, still feeling a little panicked.
"The Rumbar Pirates are still quite strong. Besides, York eventually died from an incurable disease. He won't die in this battle. He'll be fine!" Barn thought to himself.
He thought of Sarco's mockery of him for not being able to catch any fish, "Tsk, I curse you to be chopped into pieces!"
Just as he was thinking this, the door of the cabin was knocked open, and a man fell in. The man was covered in blood, and his stomach was cut open, revealing half of his intestines.
The man couldn't help but grunt, which immediately alerted Barn. Hearing the familiar voice, Barn was shocked and immediately ran over to hug the man's head.
"Sarco? Sarco! How are you injured like this? Mundo! Mundo, come quickly! Sarco is seriously injured!"
Sarco held Barn's hand tremblingly, "Don't shout, Barn, they are still fighting, don't distract them!"
"How could it be, how could it be? Mundo will definitely be able to cure you, his medical skills are so good!"
Sarco forced a smile. Although Barn couldn't see it, he felt that Sarco had something to say and fell silent.
Outside, a battlefield teemed with gunfire and cries of killing, but inside, it was eerily quiet. Barn's unfocused eyes were filled with tears.
Fitz leaped onto Barn's shoulder and gently wiped the tears from his face with his wing. Barn knelt on the floor, cradling Sarco's head, listening quietly.
"Barn, don't be sad. Ever since the day I set sail, I've been prepared. I knew this day would come. I've thought about it before, but I didn't expect it to come so soon, so quickly that I'm caught off guard. There's so much I haven't had time to do, and now I'm leaving. Ahem."
Sarco began coughing up blood. Barn covered Sarco's mouth with his hand, but he couldn't cover his own eyes. Tears dripped onto the back of Sarco's hand.
"I yearn for freedom. Captain York is my idol. It's a pity I can't continue to walk with him. Barn, live happily, okay..."
Sarco finally broke free of Barn's hand and uttered these final words.
