Their bags were packed. The terminal buzzed with quiet chatter and rolling suitcases. Rome and Hina stood beside their mom near Gate 4A, passports in hand and nerves hidden behind awkward smiles.
Mom looked at both of them with a serious, watery gaze.
"You two better watch each other's backs out there. Got it?"
Hina gave a big, fake-smiling nod. "We always do, Mom. Don't worry."
Rome grinned. "I'm just scared she's gonna leave me for some cool Japanese guy."
Hina laughed lightly, elbowing him. "Not if you get scooped up by the fan club they'll probably make for you."
They both laughed, bumping into each other like they always did.
Mom smiled, though her eyes were already glassy. "It's still crazy how you got the very last acceptance letter, Rome. I just thank God she has a strong young man like you going with her. It makes me feel a little better."
Rome shrugged with a smirk. "I don't think she needs protecting. Honestly, the guys probably won't even get close to her—she's got that intimidating face."
Hina shoved him harder this time. "My face is not intimidating, right, Mom?!"
Their mom looked away, laughing softly. "Just a little… but that doesn't take away from your beauty, sweetie."
Hina groaned and lowered her head, embarrassed.
Overhead, the intercom chimed.
"Flight 4A is now boarding. Please have your tickets ready for the plane attendant."
Mom took a deep breath, her lips trembling as tears began to gather in her eyes.
"Well… it's time."
She pulled them both into a tight hug.
"Take care of each other. I love you both so much."
"We love you too, Mom," they said together.
Rome added, "Tell Dad I love him, too."
"Same!" Hina smiled through her tears. "See you, Mom."
They waved one last time, then turned and walked toward the gate.
They found their seats next to each other on the plane. As the engines began to hum and the plane prepared for takeoff, the two sat in silence for a moment.
Hina leaned her head back against the seat and looked over at her brother.
"This is going to be fun… right, Rome?"
Rome gave a small, calm grin. "Most definitely."
Then his eyes turned toward the window as the plane rolled forward, lifting into the sky.
Rome's thoughts:
I'm only doing this because I know I have to look after you.
I'll always be here to protect you… just like you've always done for me.
