Chapter 12 - A strange wand

Author note: Before anyone goes complaining about the wand being unreasonable maybe do some research first. Olivanders father DID make wands from other cores than just Phoenix feather, Dragon heartstring or Unicorn hair. Vine wood wands are also lore accurate so theres nothing off about this at all.

-----

The moment we entered the shop and the doorbell rang there was a sudden and loud clinking sound like thousands of coins falling into a pile. A thin elderly man with a frail looking body seemed to show up out of nowhere when this happened.

"Goodness me! It seems I have a rather special customer here today, what luck!" he said with a wide smile as he deftly moved through the small shop and approached a particularly dusty stack of wand boxes.

"What is so special about those wands?" I asked genuinely curious.

"These wands were some that my father made and rarely ever meet their match. While none of them use the supreme cores I myself use do not make the mistake of assuming they do not hold just as much power." he said as he blew the dust away from the pile and began to go through the pile carefully until he found what he was looking for.

"You seem sure that my wand will come from that pile, why?" I asked curiously and even the Professor looked interested as well.

"There is only a single type of wand material that I have ever worked with that produces an effect like that when a potential match enters my shop, Vine wood. And I judged from the sound that was released that the origin of it came from this pile and here it is. Grape vine, Griffin heartstring core, ten inches, neutral predisposition. Take it and give it a swish." the man said while handing over the wand eagerly.

It was a smooth thing with a rich amber hue to it like caramel and no decorative features at all. I took the wand in my right hand and immediately felt my magic surge from my chest and into my right hand before the wand started releasing vibrant golden sparks.

"I think it likes me." I said with a genuine smile.

"Vine wands are rare to match and in truth I assumed this one would never meet an owner. It's core is the heartstring of a Griffin, a prideful beast that is well known for it's staunch defense of what treasure it protects. Strongly independent but loyal and commonly used to protect treasures but prone to melancholy without a treasure to guard. Wands take after their cores and so I assumed this one would remain ownerless forever. I am certain my father would cry in joy seeing it matched today." the man said with a happy smile.

"What do we owe you?" the Professor asked with a smile.

"Seven galleon as always on the first matching and here is a holster for it, on the house for the privilege of seeing something so extraordinary." he said as he moved behind the counter and placed a strange object made of several straps and a series of loops just big enough to sheath a wand in snugly on it.

The Professor paid the man and he was nice enough to help me attach the holster to the underside of my left arm. Sheathing and unsheathing the wand felt a bit weird but I knew it'd come easy once I got used to it. Like that we were done shopping and out of that twenty galleons I got from the loan there was only two galleons, seven sickles and twelve knuts left. -

"Alright now I must inform you that while you may be eager to try your hand at magic you need to wait until you reach Hogwarts. All underage wizards and witches have to during the summer break. A means of transportation to Kings cross station will be arranged for you by the 1st of September. I'll see you at school." The professor said sternly as she dropped me off at the orphanage.

I didn't immediately head back to Tom's pub though even if I still had enough money left over from the loan to rent a room for a few days, maybe even a week depending on the actual price. The reason for this was simply because I needed Whitebeard to come through with the gold first. From what I knew the guy was a man of his word so in theory I should be good on that front. Since the contact hadn't been erased or given any indication that the man himself was dead I assumed that meant he'd dealt with Blackbeard without any hassle or at the very least managed to save Ace from getting caught.-

In addition to that I had to make sure to keep my wand out of my hand and away from me as my contact with it caused my magic to constantly simmer in my chest and not recede like I am fairly certain it should. Judging from this reaction it was hardly surprising that so many people struggled with wandless casting. They had long since conditioned their magic to only respond to a wand by the time they think they are ready to attempt this "advanced" technique. Add on the now difficult task of learning to sense their magic they had to retrain it to work without a wand as well.-

'At least I found this problem before it was too late. I can train my magic to work by my will as well as with a wand, I'll keep it to myself though. Good to take my enemies by surprise.' I thought with a smirk as I settled in my room with one of my new textbooks.

I naturally set my new wand in it's holster in my inventory along with my trunk and it's contents. I'm not so blind as to have missed the hateful, jealous gazes the other children had when I came back. Nor did I miss the looks of greed they had when eyeing my trunk. -

While I was likely to spend the next week or so going over and memorizing my new textbooks content from the comfort and silence of the library unless I moved to Tom's pub I wasn't going to leave anything for these people to try and dig through or steal. They could tear this room apart for all I care but they'd find nothing since it's all in my inventory.
