Tessa could not forget the superior smile Thomas had given her.
The way he had pushed that full envelope of money across the table like he was feeding a bone to a dog made her feel uneasy.
For a second, seeing all the money had tempted her a bit. Anyone would be tempted...it was quite a large sum. It could change someone's life.
But then David came to her mind. She remembered Rachel, how much the woman had trusted her and given her, not just money but also kindness.
And she remembered Rachel's soft warning from before: "He'll try to get to you. Don't believe him."
Her hands shook as she put the envelope in her bag, not to keep it but to show Rachel. She took out her phone and called immediately.
"Rachel? Are you at home?" Tessa's voice was shaky and urgent.
Rachel was sitting at her dining table, with a cup of tea getting cold in front of her. She answered calmly, as if she knew the call was coming.
"Yes. Come over. You have something you need to tell me."
